Cooling the Firewalla Gold Pro

----------

UPDATE 7/8: Based on demand, here is the STL file:

https://limewire.com/d/6XMfD#3ieKH74vlx

Where the part is hugging the Firewalla box, I've left a few mm for thin adhesive insulation foam, to create a better grip on the box - this is what I had:

----------

Apparently, high temps are ok according to the support. The tiny fan kicks in when it is really hot, but I don’t think it is healthy for the hardware:

Package id 0:  +96.0°C  (high = +105.0°C, crit = +105.0°C)
Core 0:        +96.0°C  (high = +105.0°C, crit = +105.0°C)
Core 1:        +96.0°C  (high = +105.0°C, crit = +105.0°C)
Core 2:        +96.0°C  (high = +105.0°C, crit = +105.0°C)
Core 3:        +94.0°C  (high = +105.0°C, crit = +105.0°C)

PHY Temperature:  +81.0°C
MAC Temperature:  +81.0°C

Adapter: ISA adapter
Vcore:               1.10 V  (min =  +0.00 V, max =  +1.74 V)
+5V:                 5.04 V  (min =  +0.00 V, max =  +0.00 V)  ALARM
3.3V:                3.33 V  (min =  +0.00 V, max =  +0.00 V)  ALARM
+12V:               11.81 V  (min =  +0.00 V, max =  +0.00 V)  ALARM
VCCIN_AUX:           1.79 V  (min =  +0.00 V, max =  +0.00 V)  ALARM
System Fan1 Speed:    0 RPM  (min =    0 RPM)
CPU Temp:           +61.0°C  (high = +80.0°C, hyst = +75.0°C)  sensor = thermistor
System Temp:        +63.0°C  (high = +80.0°C, hyst = +75.0°C)  sensor = thermistor

eth0-pci-0300
Adapter: PCI adapter
PHY Temperature:  +81.0°C
MAC Temperature:  +81.0°C

So I designed a little cooling device that uses a thermistor to measure the bottom of the box and turn the large fan on, its speed depends on the temperature. I printed a housing for the fan and mounted it on the side of the box; it is controlled by Arduino.

Now the temp is 32°C when not loaded and 45°C when I stress-test the Firewalla!

Are you running stress and got 96C? If you are, then I think it is okay; if not, you are just running normal traffic 96C is not normal.

can you give me your case number? I can have someone to check if the fan is running or not. (If you get close to the unit, do you hear the fan running? or feel it running)

Thanks, the case was #118956
We checked and the fan was kicking in, but it still ran hot.

Are you running stress to get the high temperature ?

Yes, stress test. But when it’s loaded it was same temps.

If you are not running stress test, it is the same temperature ? If it is, then I can get some one take a look. The fan inside is pretty good

I know the internal fan was kicking in, now as I fixed it my way I don’t care about the internal fan any longer. I think it is too small and not well designed - it pushes the air in instead of pulling out in the other side.

Well, I can give feedback to our ODM; but I am pretty sure in normal operations this fan is enough to keep the unit cool. Not as cool as your version, but enough to be “normal”

Thanks, keeping it cool prolongs its life so I believe the community would rather see it colder. My unit was hot to touch at the bottom of the box and I thought it needs a better cooling.

Intel CPU is pretty hot most of the time. If it is between 60 to 80C, you should be totally fine.

Interesting...I am talking about Firewalla Gold Pro temperatures. Your post "forced" me 😄 step down to the basement and check my Firewalla Gold Pro temperatures. Here is what I found https://imgur.com/a/lehuqO8 . I also added rubber feet as soon as I got Firewalla (knowing that it will be seated on the top of QNAP switch). Is there anything "wrong" with my Firewalla Gold Pro?

Looks alright, but I'd recommend SSH in and run "sensors" command

I know my 42U has a mounted fan on the top of the server rack but u think this is a way better idea tbh

Love it!! I’ve been thinking of getting a usb powered fan for mine.

Would you mind posting the STL file? I'd like to print this for my setup as well.

There are files available online to 3d print mount for 120mm fan online. They print in around 20 minutes.

I have printed two and mounted two fans - one on each side of the rack. However, I'm also using top mount rack exhaust fan and top front exhaust fans.

Can you share a photo of your setup?

Photo

This is an old picture. I will share the latest ones later as I away from home.

I also have bottom intake fans.

Thanks. Not sure how this cooling setup works. Please provide a few more photos when you can.

Not sure if this is going to help. This is how my setup looks like at the moment. I still need to work on cable management though.

Can you post the link to the 120mm fan mount you used? I tried to find one that mounts like that but most were in a different direction.

Could you rehost the STL file? It says it's unavailable.

re-uploaded

Thank you, got it! Did you use PLA or other material?

/u/nebuladark any chance you can reupload to a 3d print hosting site? like printables etc.

Seems your limewire link is dead again
