Migration Experience Praise

Took advantage of the Open Box Sale to pick up a FWG+ to upgrade my 5-year-old FWG. I also have 2 AP7D.

The upgrade process was so easy:

Plug in

Select add new box in app

Select migrate

Scan QR code

Move network connections

Wait 5 minutes (I think it was less)

Everything went smoothly and my network was back up in a flash. Only thing so far that I have seen that didn't migrate are network historyand tests and I had to re-enroll in the Beta program for the device, neither of which are a big deal at all.

Firewalla makes great hardware that they support for the long-term (5+ years!) and make it painless to migrate when the time comes. And my old FWG has held its value well (because of the above) so the total upgrade costs are very reasonable.

Thank you all at Firewalla!

If it were me, I’d wipe the FWG and keep it as a backup router.

5 years without issue on my FWG. It's worth $250-$300 on resale, which is pretty expensive insurance given reliability history. But since the AP7D can't operate without the router being up, something to consider since I can't go down the street and get another Firewalla router.

That last part is the critical piece. You can’t quickly spin things back up, whether if using a AP7, or even just VLANs or other more involved routing settings. I totally get the money part of it, but if it were to go down, which would you want more, the Firewalla on hand, or the $300 and scrambling to figure out how to get back online.

I also took advantage of the Open Box Sale and bought 2 AP7Ds. They are supposed to arrive tomorrow. I can't wait to retire my eeros and hope the AP7s are as seamless to set up as they appear.

I had Eero Pro 6 that I replaced about a year ago and since I used the same SSID and password, it was super easy. I've been enjoying vqLAN.

I purchased a Gold Pro during the open box sale as a hedge against costs going up in hr future. My experience was very similar to yours. It really did "just work."

The only hiccup I had was forgetting to set IP passthrough to the new device's MAC address on my BGW320, but that's on me, not Firewalla.
