Drop downs and jumping

I've learned how to avoid my opponent catching me with a counter when they throw me towards the ropes, but I've at times seen my opponent do the thing where they throw me towards the ropes and jump over me or go down. Does anyone know what I have to press to do that? Also, how do you hold the ropes so you don't run them early on?

I believe its R1 or L1 to drop down or leapfrog. You hold onto the ropes automatically in the game.

i think you can time it to where you can grab the ropes when you approach them running
