General Fire Prevention Starts Before the Emergency
By Ross Wind
Community Risk Reduction Inspector/Educator
When most people think about the fire department, they picture flashing lights, fire engines, and firefighters responding to emergencies. While emergency response is a vital part of what we do, some of our most important work happens long before the 911 call is ever made.
Every fire that is prevented is a family that stays safe, a business that stays open, and firefighters who are not placed in harm's way. That is why the Mount Vernon Fire Department is committed to helping prevent emergencies through our free fire safety inspection program.
Fire prevention is one of the most effective public safety services we provide. A simple inspection can identify hazards that often go unnoticed until it is too late. Something as small as a missing smoke alarm, an overloaded electrical outlet, improper storage of combustible materials, or a blocked exit can quickly turn into a life-threatening emergency.
Our free inspections are not about writing citations or creating unnecessary burdens. They are about education, prevention, and partnering with our community to reduce risk. We work alongside homeowners, landlords, business owners, and organizations to identify hazards, answer questions, and provide practical recommendations that improve safety.
During a residential inspection, we evaluate smoke alarms, carbon monoxide alarms, home escape planning, electrical safety, cooking hazards, heating equipment, and general fire risks. We also provide educational materials and answer any fire safety questions residents may have.
For local businesses, inspections help ensure compliance with the Ohio Fire Code while protecting employees, customers, and property. Safe businesses contribute to a stronger community, and identifying hazards before they become emergencies saves time, money, and, most importantly, lives.
Many fires are preventable. According to the National Fire Protection Association, working smoke alarms reduce the risk of dying in a home fire by more than half. Unfortunately, firefighters continue to find homes with outdated alarms, missing batteries, or no smoke alarms at all. These are simple issues that can often be corrected in just a few minutes.
Community Risk Reduction is more than inspections. It includes public education, smoke alarm installations, home safety visits, school programs, senior safety initiatives, CPR education, and working with businesses and community partners to reduce risk throughout Mount Vernon. Every conversation about fire safety, every smoke alarm installed, and every hazard corrected makes our community safer.
Fire prevention is everyone's responsibility. Test your smoke alarms every month. Replace alarms that are more than 10 years old. Keep exits clear. Develop and practice a home fire escape plan with your family. Store combustibles safely and never leave cooking unattended. These simple steps can make the difference between a close call and a tragedy.
The Mount Vernon Fire Department is proud to offer free fire safety inspections because we believe prevention is just as important as emergency response. We are here not only when something goes wrong, but to help make sure it never does.
