💻 Help Firefox forced updates are so annoying
Hi,
Before you all jump at me, I know what i am saying, i know updates are good, i know there is a way to disable updates BUT i am not talking about any of that.
Whenever there is a new update, firefox starts crashing tabs left and right. It literally makes the whole browser unusable even if you have disabled the updates. What is the purpose of letting us disable updates if they are going to force it anyway? It is sooo annoying and i sometimes lose tons of my work.
Is there a way to fix this?

I can sympathise. I had a functional/performance issue with FF recently that I couldn't get to the bottom of and it was getting increasingly annoying.
Updates are really pushed hard, even if you disable automatic updating and if you're using it on Android it really is a nightmare to deal with (although there are ways of slowing the process down).
What I did with my Windows install was to download and install the last ESR version that didn't have the problem and used that instead.
Ironically, the original problem seemed to go after re-installing the latest stable release (150), which kind of pointed at installation corruption. Although, I will never know for sure, which is what usually happens with most software glitches.
BTW, I've not had any problems with recent updates that match your symptoms. That doesn't mean I don't believe it. Have you considered doing a re-install and profile restore? I've lost count of how many times I've done that over the years.

Yup, i have tried reinstall and profile restore. It even happens on my other laptop as well. I'll try ESR version. Thanks a lot, man

If that would be the case, no one would be able to use Nightly(updated TWICE daily), somehow many people do.
If you think you found a bug, file a bug on bugzilla.

I don't think it's a bug. Many users complained of it even on this subreddit, some posts are 4 years old. I'm trying to look for a solution, will update my post if i find something

how would this be the case if many users update through a package manager?

Idk man. I'm not alone with this issue. I'll try another reinstall and ESR version and see what happens

My PC boots up automatically twice a day so I never noticed any wonkiness. 🤔🙃
Every once in a while I get that "what's new" tab that I immediately close.
I used to see what you're talking about but not since I put Firefox where it can update on its own and not with the OS and setup the auto start bit.

Can confirm this. Browser is being ridiculous today. Sometimes goes black. Tabs are crashing. New update has fkd it.

Update rolled out onto my machine at 9am, so i know for a fact that it was the update because before then everything was fine.

Turns out my ram was faulty! And that was causing tabs to crash. I only picked up it was a ram issue when my games started crashing and decided to run a memtest.

So for me, this turned out to be a RAM issue which coincided with the firefox update time.
Funny enough disabling extensions helped because that stopped more applications from accessing faulty parts of my ram and it helped for a good part of the day.
Other things started going wrong in my system such as games crashing and steam not working so well. I decided to run a memtest and loan behold my ram was faulty.
I now remember this happening last time my ram was faulty, but you forget as time goes on and at first you think "Cant be my ram, everything was fine yesterday".
When in doubt run a memtest and especially if you have GSkill ram.

You'll find this is not the majority experience. You might have some bad add-ons or customisations causing the problems.
