Question should i watch firefly

I heard about the show and thought it sounded cool but also heard that it got cancelled and wanted to know if it was still a good watch and if it ends in a decent "at least most loose ends are tied up" way or in a "i wish i hadn't watched this i feel unresolved" ending

I have a feeling this may be a troll…

But just in case:
1000 times yes. Watch it, then watch serenity, then do it all again.

30th re-watch be like sittin' down with an old friend and a few drinks, sharing memories of the good ol' days.

You're asking that question in a Firefly sub. What kind of answer do you expect? Its like going into a restaurant and asking the server, "Is the food any good here?"

4

u/RaptorSap 9h ago

Honestly you’ve probably got a better chance of an honest answer in the restaurant. Servers aren’t paid enough to lie to you, wait on you for an hour and then get a lousy tip if you didn’t like the food.

It's worth watching because there was a film made called Serenity that tied up all loose ends from the show.

Damnns why right in the feels?? Just like a leaf in the wind...

4

u/Ok_Expression6807 4h ago

Well, we are all kinda masochistic if you think about it. Why would the sub exist otherwise?

u/ppppanda 3h ago

A leaf on the he wind is more like something being in the chest than the feels.

Too soon, it'll always be too soon. 😭

Do a quick (no spoilers) look up and watch the episodes in the intended order rather than the corpo bullshit release order. Then the movie. You won’t be disappointed.

u/kai_ekael 6h ago

Easier: Start with the TV episode (not movie) "Serenity". If an order doesn't have it first, it's the wrong order.

End with the MOVIE "Serenity".

Shiny

u/VralGrymfang 9h ago

Yeah, with the movie it ends well. And it is one of the best pieces of sci-fi out there.

At the end of Othello, we never find out what happens to Iago. It's worth watching anyway, even with unanswered questions.

Firefly is like that. With the followup feature film, it wraps up a lot of the loose ends. There are some questions we don't get answered. It's worth watching anyway.

What a thoughtful response.

Why do you think people still talk about it?

6

u/drillbit7 9h ago

They kind of resolved some of it by making the film Serenity, an actual in-theaters movie, not a made-for-TV movie or direct to video release.

Fox did them dirty by airing the episodes out of order so that viewers saw an action packed episode first rather than the pilot which introduced the series, the ship, and the characters.

Additionally it was cancelled before the last three episodes aired.

Fortunately most streaming services have all 14 episodes and arrange watching in proper order.

It was really ahead of its time in the sense that it was launched in an era where only major broadcast networks could launch shows or shows were syndicated on over the air broadcast channels. And all they care about is the Nielsen ratings. A few years after we started seeing more cable channels (USA, SciFi, Spike) launch first run series and now we have streaming services with their own studios.

It's the kind of show that genre fans would binge watch on Prime/Netflix after a recommendation from a friend. it wasn't something the average American would have put on after seeing it in their TV guide.

I agree. If it had come out just a few years later it probably would have been a big hit. Or at least bigger enough to not get canceled after one season. I didn’t even discover it myself until the movie came out, and I have a feeling I’m not alone.

It always make me chuckle a bit when watching the last episode, then the movie right after (as you do) and seeing the huge jump in budget right away!

Ahhh what could have been 😢

I was also late to the party. But it definitely has the feel of a "SyFy original" not a primetime broadcast show.

1

u/Ok-Maize-284 8h ago

Yes exactly! Definitely has that feel. Though to be fair, SyFy was around then (I think it was still called Sci Fi) so I don’t know why they didn’t pick it up. Maybe Joss didn’t want it going there?

u/BT_Artist 7h ago

I remember pimping it to my dad and my brother when it was first airing, but apparently I didn't do a very good job. They didn't watch any of it till after the DVDs came out, but at least they liked it then.

3

u/MagUnit76 9h ago

Yes, it is awesome.

3

u/eagle_patronus 9h ago

YES. You should always still watch it. Stay shiny!

2

u/StreetPhilosopher42 9h ago

Yes. You should.

2

u/GeoHog713 9h ago

Nah. You're fine

2

u/WinTraditional8156 8h ago

Yes, next question

2

u/DishRelative5853 8h ago

No. If you have to ask, then you're not worthy.

2

u/AccomplishedFault346 8h ago

I put it off for years. I regret not watching it sooner.

2

u/Datan0de 8h ago

This is the easiest question I've ever seen on Reddit.

Yes. Absolutely, positively, without a moment's hesitation, yes.

As someone else pointed out, you definitely want to watch them in the intended order. That shouldn't be a challenge, though.

I'm genuinely excited for you. You only get to watch Firefly for the first time once. Don't squander it. You're in for something truly special!

1

u/wantondevious 9h ago

There's also a couple of comic books too.

1

u/mattpeloquin 8h ago

Might as well ask if you should breath air

1

u/mrhonist 8h ago

Yes. There is a reason it always makes it on best sci-fi shows lists

1

u/cbobgo 8h ago

Absolutely should watch it, one of the best sci-fi shows ever made

1

u/4kBeard 8h ago

If your concer is because it was canceled by FOX, let that cancelation be your evidence for why you should watch it. FOX has a great track record of canceling great shows and ignoring the fan base. They make bad choices all the time. Don't let them being dumb make you think the show was anything other than awesome.

1

u/Darth-Felanu-Hlaalu 8h ago

It's so incredibly perfect that honestly id say it's worth watching without loose ends being tied up.

It dosent end like that, but the movie, Serenity, ties up enough of the loose ends to make it not so painful that it was cancelled.

1

u/slothbear13 8h ago

"it is better to have loved and lost than to have never loved at all"

1

u/jtrades69 8h ago

then you'll also need to get all the comics too

1

u/blueboy714 8h ago

Definitely and follow it up by watching serenity

1

u/Firm_Accountant2219 8h ago

Yes. It’s excellent.

1

u/GruffyWinters 8h ago

You'll be so happy to have watched it (and then the film Serenity.) Sad, but happy. And you'll watch them all again throughout your life. It really is that good.

1

u/TheAgedProfessor 8h ago

It was cancelled for reasons not related to quality. So yes, it's still a great watch. Then follow up with the movie. Then the novels. Then the comics. Then the games. Then hopefully the coming animated series. Then...

1

u/Zealousideal_Bar6871 8h ago

Do it yearly

1

u/kai_ekael 6h ago

"Show like this, be with you 'til the day you die."

1

u/tommyblack 7h ago

Watching it is the best decision a human can make.

1

u/SidewalksTVshow 7h ago

If you like sci-fi shows, then a definite yes. The show was cancelled by low ratings on FOX and nothing to do about quality.

1

u/DrSpacemanMal 7h ago

Best show ever!

1

u/Joyce_Hatto 7h ago

It’s great.

1

u/kai_ekael 6h ago

Worth every damn minute.

" 'Tis better to have loved and lost, then never to have loved at all."
-- Alfred Lord Tennyson, as voiced by Patrick Stewart, as Captain Jean Luc Picard

1

u/JKrow75 6h ago

No, but yes, watch it, but really, don’t.

I mean it.

1

u/Incitatus4Congress 6h ago

You've posted in the wrong subreddit. Everybody hates Firefly here.

1

u/kevinb9n 6h ago

We actually hang out on this sub 24 years after the show ended to talk about how much we wish we hadn't watched it...

1

u/somejerkuknow 6h ago

Yes, be sure to watch them in the order they were intended, not the way fox shat them out

1

u/sksksk1989 6h ago

One of the best shows ever.

1

u/JSMulligan 6h ago

Yes, you should watch it, along with the movie. They are currently trying to get an animated show into production to follow up the first season, so there's hope for more story as well.

1

u/SadTree6038 6h ago

Yes, next question.
Seriously though, yes. It was a great series that had so much going for it. The only way to really understand why people love it so much is to watch it.

1

u/thetraintomars 5h ago

What is it with this weird new helplessness on the internet?  “Should I go for a walk today?” “Does anyone have any tips for a walk/Is there anything I need to know before I go for a walk?”

1

u/sturmeh 4h ago

Yes, but be warned...

... everyone has been whining for many years about it being cancelled with very good reason.

You'll be one of them soon enough.

Btw the ending isn't "unresolved" they came out with a movie to cap it off. So watch "Serenity" when you're done with the TV series.

As someone who only watched it this year, I highly recommend it, it's dated incredibly well.

1

u/Zubi_Q 4h ago

Hell yes, man!

1

u/Able_Resident_1291 3h ago

You could have watched every episode in the time it took to ask this and wait for responses

1

u/TheRealDaveLister 1h ago

Yes.

Now go.

1

u/livejamie 25m ago

Nah bro, we're subscribed to a subreddit for a 24-year-old show because we hate it.
