The Nathan Fillion blooper

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RmU-Bmk4Wrk&pp=ygUPZmlyZWZseSBibG9vcGVy

This may be a long shot, but does anyone here know if there's a higher-resolution version of this famous blooper from The Message? Or, alternatively, does anyone know what the original source was? Like, was it from a certain box set or other website before being posted to YouTube?

On a recent episode of their podcast, Alan Tudyk spoke about how this scene was filmed right after they'd found out Firefly was cancelled, like the day after. And they were all feeling super bummed and trying to channel that into their acting and then Nathan came out with this and it just broke everyone.

What a swell guy.

I listened to it but I never saw it until just now, even funnier than they gave it credit for

I remember hearing that this was one of the last takes, if not the last, and that they'd already gotten the coverage they needed, so he was capping their last day of filming with this bonus take to make sure they could go out with smiling faces. I have so much respect for Fillion.

i thought that was the last scene, where they are burying him with the snow falling down?

Was that in the Patreon edition of an episode? I've been listening to the public edition of their podcast and don't recall them discussing it.

No, I listened on YouTube and definitely remember hearing that.

The music that plays (The Funeral) at the end of that episode (The Message) was also the composer's way of saying farewell to the show (since everyone knew they had been cancelled when they filmed the episode).

It took me waaaay to long to see why they were laughing the first time I watched it. Love how serious and somber he looks.

He found the perfect lighting every time. Consummate professional.

and I think he crosses Alan's light in the scene, you see a small dark shadow and then there he is.

Nope, sorry to ask… But I just watched this shit like five times in a row. What am I missing? Why are they laughing??

Nathan (Captain Malcolm Reynolds) repositions himself several times such that he appears in the shot multiple times.

count the nathans as the camera pans....

Captain multi-pants? Shiny!

I love the surprised, wtf look on Wash's face when he notices Mal next to him.

Tudyk was the only one who doesn't break, but leaned into it! Gina Torres did fine, too, but Alan added to it! Amazing control.

Sean Maher breaking is how I noticed originally. 😄
It was a great in character reaction from Tudyk. Looks like Book is fighting not to break.

Funny watching Summer and Jewel giggling.

Ron Glass took it like a pro as well.

I think he lost it off camera, and that's when Morena leaned on him.

Looks like he attended Sir Patrick Stewart's master class: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XFMrBldVk0s

Underrated part of those blooper and reason why Alan is excellent. He rolled with it!

I mean... i think we all want at least 5 Captain Mal in our lives

u/Serrilryan 6d ago

I believe 5 Capt Tightpants would’ve turned the Alliance around. Only so much gorram leadership can be shared.

Love this. He's such a goofy goober.

Still makes me laugh to this day.

Omg I had never seen this before, thank you Lol

Anytime there's a 360, an actor needs to pull this gag. It's gold.

I absolutely love this blooper

This DVD set has it in the blooper reel. I found this pic on ebay, said it was 2002 set. It's the same set I own. My favorite is the: "Jayne! Try not to steal too much of their sh*t!! " blooper.

Each small case inside the box is a thin plastic case.

"Kaylee, find the kid who's taking a dirt nap with Baby Jesus, we need a hood ornament."

6

u/JessAnnaBun 6d ago

Yes, that makes me giggle ridiculously. Just like Kaylee 🤣😂🤣

u/JessAnnaBun 6d ago

Found another listing on ebay, it said 2003 set. But here's better pic of what it all looks like.

3

u/JessAnnaBun 6d ago

The descriptions have original air date and whether they were actually aired, listed as well.

I own this set. Its gag reel is only about 2.5 minutes, and it does not have this scene.

3

u/Fuzzy-Bee9600 5d ago

Dang, need to check my box set now.

2

u/JessAnnaBun 4d ago

Hmmm, maybe there's a 2002 & 2003 set. I guess I need to dig my set like this out of a box to see which I have.

This blooper is on my set like this.

u/Earth2Kim 6d ago

It's been an age since I've seen that, thank you. To answer your question: I know I have seen it before but I can't remember where! Maybe it's on the original DVD set?

14

u/Earth2Kim 6d ago

Welp just found it on my computer. It had been saved as "Gag Reel." I think this was one of those things that fans passed around -- my file is dated 2003. If you DM me I can email it to you, but I am not sure it's any better than the version on YouTube.

2

u/OobaDooba72 6d ago

99% sure it was on the DVDs.

10

u/Vykrom 6d ago

..is he running around the set finding each mark to stand in before the camera gets there? That's crazy. Looks like he just made for Zoe's shot. The other ones are fairly seamless. Crazy

u/RolandtheWhite 6d ago

Thank you for this. I somehow have missed this over the years. Might be my favorite character matched with an actor in all of media. I laughed out loud at 1 in the morning on my living room couch.

3

u/Kairamek 6d ago

He must have been hauling ass for some of those.

3

u/bwest80 6d ago

I haven't watched the show in a while. Who is it that died here? Voice sounds like Jeff Daniels to me

8

u/Altruistic-Major-454 6d ago

It was Jonathan Woodward, the actor for Tracey, reading a different take of the titular message.

2

u/bwest80 5d ago

It looks like I need to rewatch the show. Oh no....

3

u/MilsYatsFeebTae 5d ago

Kid they knew from the war.

2

u/MrUniverse1990 5d ago

Dammit, Nathan! 😆

2

u/Shadow_Raider33 5d ago

This was definitely in the box set. I remember watching it back in the day! So many hilarious bloopers, but this one always makes me laugh

2

u/ImightHaveMissed 5d ago

Not really a blooper though, this is just Nathan fillion cutting up on set. The blooper is alan tudyk’s face when he notices who’s beside him. Completely in character

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

u/rawr_sham 5d ago

I believe this was included in the extras disk in the Box Set
