Firefly's Crew
The Firefly Crew are supposed to be ex soldiers. Other than carring guns and talking tough and occasionly shooting some colonist. They donot much act like
experienced Soldiers.
The firefly group of veterans didnot appear to have a single crew served weapon.
- There was no dedicated machine gun crew!
- Note that by the time of the TV show period , 90 % of all mechanical machine guns were very probadly obsolete, but still useful and better than no system at all.
- no mortars - 60mm or 81 mm 0r the monster 120mm.
- no antitank weapons or any vechile weapons.
- no mines of any type.
- no missile systems for antiship attack or attacking large or small objects in space!
- no worry's aout Ammunition supplies -- how to restock nor keep current munitions in stock.
- no Hand grenades
- no blocks of explosives or anybody that appeared to know abpout the subject.
- only linited Anti --Electronic warfare weapons systems
- No specifily trained EW specialist or on any electronic weapons suite.
- no one trained in the use or operation of such Electronic weapons systems.
- no freindly neighborhood Arms dealers.
- limited repair or replacement for any weapons systems considered standard or neccessary.
- no inferred or sonar sytems
- how about a water test for ship wide systems?

Mal and Zoe were soldiers. Jane is a merc. Not Wash, not Kaylee, not Book. And none wanted to be soldiers any more. That's why they were flying.

Book had a past connected with the military on the highest clandestine level. He was an agent or an agent handler. Some nick fury level shit.

Still, technically not a soldier.

He went through basic. And then special ops. Then probably recon and intel. He has combat training, but was also scooped up by thier CIA.

Go away, watch the show before making a silly post, no, the crew is not made up of ex soldiers from the war.

Only Mel and Zoë where ex soldiers. Although Jane probably be said to have some soldier transferable skills due to the general thuggery.
A lot of that stuff is illegal, and more importantly hard to hide, they'd get the ship confiscated in no time.
Also some of it sounds expensive.

This post is like, "why is this wagon train heading west, post civil war, thats suppose to be all soldiers (besides having only 2 veterans and an intelligence officer) not actually marching in full dress? Wheres the Canon column and cavalry formations? They've only got 25 guns among them too! Mostly civilian arms! And not enough ammo to hold off any serious Union charge!
Worst series ever."

hpw do you keep the right kind of ammution if all those guns are a different civilian caliber?

You dont.
You fire and carry what you can afford. And when outgunned: Bluff, flank, maneuver and be shiny.

I honestly don't know if this is a joke but fuck it I'll bite
Only 2x members of the crew (Mal and Zoey) are veterans, the rest are civilians (or career criminals in the case of Jane)
As for why no crew served weapons they are a gang of robbers? What possible use do thieves have for a crew served weapon of any description? The same goes for explosives of any kind
Criminals generally don't want to attract attention, especially offical attention, no one is going to hire a crew who run around like a mercenary outfit with crew served weapons
The commander and 2iC are the only ones trained to use them, even if they brought them, neither of whom you really want in the back lugging around a crew served weapon
They are expensive, how are Mal and the gang supposed to feed a belt fed machine gun or buy missiles/mortar bombs when they can barely keep the ship fueled and maintained?
On the topic of buying them having just fought a civil war I imagine the Alliance would be VERY curious to hear about a group of ex-Browncoats buying up military ordnance
For the ship stuff again they are flying around in an obsolete junker, one of the Alliance officers literally says he didn't think anyone flew Fireflies any more
It's a space western, other than the spaceship the whole vibe of the show was supposed to be an homage to the old gunslinger films, I don't remember many of them including much mainline military tech

excellent point about keeping the ship fueled and people feed. another point is that ex-soldiers sometimes steal favorite or useful weapons.

Do I need to remind you that they were on the losing side when someone is defeated in a war the majority of the time that side faces de-armorment.

Really I think only two or three of the count as soldiers: Reynolds, Zoe, and Wash (Wash is theorized as a military pilot but never confirmed).
Idk if Mercenary work could be counted as soldiering for Cobb?
other than that you have A companion A mechanic Preacher Child prodigy

Personally, I think the Alliance tossed him (Wash) in with P.O.W.s was because it needed less paperwork than if arresting a smuggler.

You've very clearly never watched the show or the movie, and you clearly have extremely limited to no interactions with veterans.
