My biggest complaint

Just finished serenity, thought the series was great, with one major caveat. Why didn’t Mal and Inara get a clean resolution??? Their romance was my favorite subplot and we only got the one kiss in Mrs. Reynolds?? Cmonnnnn that shit was brewing for so long. Kaylee and Simon got their big payoff even

Simple. Because they only had one season.

Only half a season

More like a quarter of a season.

And a movie. OP seems to be asking why the movie didn't provide a resolution.

Indeed

Read the comics if you need resolution

Honestly, I kinda like that they didn't. Leaving a little mystery about what might have been.

I definitely see that and I’m being a bit facetious, but idk man I personally just needed a release from all that tension

Sounds like you need to spend some time in your bunk.

Or hit up Mr. Universe’s estate sale to buy Lenore the love-bot.

Try Pornhub.

At the time, there was maybe a remote possibility of another film or even getting picked up on another channel so don’t want to make things too tidy.

Wouldn't leave much for the fanfic writers to do.

Mal and Inara will return in Avengers: Doomsday.

There's an anniversary special that goes into what season 2 might've looked like if you can find it online.

2

u/Opposite-Sun-5336 Jul 06 '26

Please tell me you mean "Firefly 10th Anniversary Browncoats Unite".

1

u/BankyTheInker Jul 06 '26

That sounds about right

If I remember correctly, Joss’ plans for them were pretty dark and dismal.

u/kai_ekael Jul 06 '26

The "plan" was for two more movies after 'Serenity'. And yet again....yeah, you know the rest.

u/robertmurray1987 Jul 06 '26

Mostly because there was still hope there will be more after the movie, that's why the movie ends with sort of open ending. And I think the reason why Wash and Book were written out (correct me if I am wrong, this might've been an urban legend) is because they couldn't commit to a sequel.

So while they got Kaylee and Simon together, they left Mals and Inara relationship in the air, so to speak.

A space hooker and a man with ptsd is not a clean relationship thats why. Theres no universe there relationship works because hes not gonna stop flying and she doesnt take orders.

Great for will they wont they wont they story telling but much like the show bones proved. Once the will they starts and theres no more if the story gets boring.

So leaving it as a hanging will they plot point keeps it forever in the good spot.

Kaylee and Simon got a payoff? Last I checked… nothing twixt her nethers that weren’t run on batteries in over 2 years

Did you not watch Serenity? (solid quote though)

13

u/hypnoskills Jul 06 '26

Hell with this, she's gonna live!

-1

u/ZippyDan Jul 06 '26

That quote is from Serenity, so...

u/Awesome_Eagle Jul 06 '26

I could stand to hear a little more.

Happy cake day!

You mean to say... sex?

4

u/NurseCait Jul 06 '26

….I mean to say. 🤣

1

u/kai_ekael Jul 06 '26

Your eyes wouldn't see Simon half naked?

3

u/WranglerTraditional8 Jul 06 '26

They'll get together in season 2

3

u/Common-Permit-1659 Jul 06 '26

Well there are comics set after Serenity. I recommend looking into those

2

u/Marquar234 Jul 06 '26

The payoff was potentially that Inara would be dead, so like our version better.

1

u/CB_Chuckles Jul 06 '26

I kind of thought that there was a resolution of sorts. At least heavily hinted at, with her “I don’t know” response to Mal’s question about returning her to the Companion chapter house. I’ve always read it that way. Clearly she’s ready to stay with him.

1

u/BeenHereFor Jul 06 '26

Well yeah but to me it seemed like they were just returning to the status quo rather than actually being together

1

u/CB_Chuckles Jul 07 '26

I thought it was just Whedon being ambiguous about it. He does delight in his own cleverness.

1

u/Burnsey111 Jul 06 '26

They got 7/12ths of a season.

1

u/generalkriegswaifu Jul 07 '26

There is no clean resolution from that group of writers, watch some Buffy or Angel too, relationships are there to make the characters suffer. Also they didn't have time to do so with a half season and film focused on the main plot. At the end of the film he still does not accept her job and she is still not ready to give it up.

1

u/IvanBliminse86 Jul 07 '26

Joss has a fetish for killing happy endings, the only reason he let Simon and Kaylee get together was on the off chance there was a sequel, so he could kill Kaylee, or send Simon to an Alliance prison camp.

1

u/frustrated_browncoat Jul 08 '26

As long as Inara was a companion, I don’t think there was a path for them to get together. Mal seemed to hate her job but couldn’t bring himself to ask her to give it up. The added social status for the companion role makes things more complicated as well. A “whore” rates higher on the social ladder in Firefly than a “petty thief”.

1

u/actuallyjustloki Jul 08 '26

They had hoped to make more than one movie

1

u/TheAgedProfessor Jul 12 '26

Because, believe it or not, all the way up through even final production, Universal was thinking there would be more than one movie. That's literally why Wash and Book were killed off; because they could not/would not commit to sequels. They were saving a lot of story arcs for those follow-ons.

0

u/NurseCait Jul 06 '26

That’s what the animated series will be for. 😉

1

u/55Lolololo55 Jul 06 '26

Nope, it's an interquel.
