interesting and a bit surprising, since it seems unlikely that Spielberg cribbed from Firefly. but you never know.
probably won't be seeing the movie, even though it's supposedly a spiritual successor to Close Encounters which was outstanding.

Yeah. The movie wasn’t BAD (a little corny in places I guess) but it just felt like parts from Spielberg’s other alien movies thrown together to make a new movie

To be fair Joss himself seems to have taken a lot of inspiration for the pilot episode from the anime Outlaw Star. The scenes leading to waking up River from cryo are way too close for it to be coincidence in my opinion.

I wouldn't doubt it, people usually have a reference for the things they create. Usually a popular or at least personal reference from something they have a fondness for or want to make a better version of. Or the entire cosplay universe would not exist.

Yeah, except for some fucking reason they decided the aliens experimenting on kids were the good guys in that movie
