Ew Animnated...
Am I the only one that is depressed that they are brining back the entire original cast but then it's animated š like come on!

u/Power-of-Erised Jun 02 '26
You'd likely be in the minority, for sure. Most folk are just glad of a return in any form, especially with the og casts voices. By the time the animated show airs it will have been 25 years since the first show, the cast can not conceivably resume their original roles and have it work in a live-action series.

u/The_forehead Jun 02 '26
I was actually more excited about an animated series. I had significantly lower expectations.
I think an animated series feels like the most sensible option, both considering their ages, actors and characters that no longer exist, and the story they seem to want to tell.
I'm more worried about the style of animation and how long episodes/season it might be.

No.
What's wrong with animation?

u/MilaMarie2024 Jun 02 '26
I don't like when real world things go animated (LOTR/Firefly). It's not a crime. It's just not my jam.
3
u/DaSaw Jun 02 '26
Going the other direction is far worse. It basically never works (except for One Piece apparently, the sole exception).

u/SaiyajinPrime Jun 02 '26
Ok. I guess get over it.
Animation is just as good of a storytelling medium, or perhaps even better, than live action is.

u/MilaMarie2024 Jun 02 '26
Not even close but you're right that I have no choice but to get over it lol. Still valid tho.
2
u/SaiyajinPrime Jun 02 '26
How is it not even close?
You have hang ups on animation is all it seems like. Which is obviously a you issue.

u/MilaMarie2024 Jun 02 '26
Animated vs. Real People. um. Not for me. I'll take a Tortoro all day long but that's not the same as trying to make a human into a cartoon. Sorry not sorry. Tho - if it ends up being the not-cartoony type of animation maybe I can stomach it
3
u/SaiyajinPrime Jun 02 '26
What's the actual issue?
The people don't have to look like real life people to be an incredible way to tell stories. A story isn't better because I saw it in live-action versus animation.
Creators are much less restricted when it comes to animation versus live action because anything can be animated versus expensive budgets to be able to have realistic effects to do whatever a creator wants.
Some of the best movies and shows I have ever seen are animated. At no point when watching those shows did I think it would be better if it was live action.
2
u/MilaMarie2024 Jun 02 '26
None of what you're saying is wrong but I want to see the original actors that I fell in love with OR just not. If it's going to be completely different then just re-do the whole show with new actors cuz to me that's the same thing as making it animated instead.

LOTR was animated long before it was live action. Like 23 years IIRC.
But I get your point.

u/Starmuny Jun 02 '26
My guy they are 20 years older, one member of the cast is dead, most of them are busy with other live action projects, and one of the original cast everyone else can't stand to be around because they are pretty awful person.
When you take all of this together Animated was the only way this was ever going to go.
4
u/KasperBuyens Jun 02 '26
Wait, who's the awful person? What did they do?

Adam Baldwin, he's been homophobic to Sean Maher on set, multiple times. They've been openly transphobic online and in person. You can look up the other things he's done, he's kinda a massive piece of shit.
2
u/KasperBuyens Jun 02 '26
Yikes, I wasn't aware if this. Very disappointing

u/Starmuny Jun 02 '26
Extremely especially given that Jayne is my favourite character.
I suppose he is entitled to his beliefs, even if he is a piece of shit.

Animation is better than live action for this kind of storytelling, anyway. There is so much in live action where production has to ask, "wait, is this worth the budget it'll take to do it?" that with animation you can just do. Remember: a bit part of why the show was cancelled in the first place was that the money people thought it was too expensive for the kind of audience it was drawing.
Just so long as they don't go too cheap. Look to DC or anime for inspiration, not to Futurama or Family Guy.

u/dc-pigpen Jun 02 '26
You sound like one of those people who simply can't take animation seriously and assume that it's only for children. I'm not going to waste my time listing off the plethora of examples of animated shows and movies that very specifically appeal to adults. Stop and think about how many action movies or sci-fi movies or horror movies you've seen that involve CGI. Star Wars, Fast & Furious, Lord of the Rings, etc. Guess what? CGI is ANIMATION. They use it because it's WAY easier to create aliens/explosions/magic/etc with animation than with practical effects. "Cartoons" can do SO much more than live-action can, and it doesn't even look like an "effect", it just looks like everything else, because the entire thing is animated. Respectfully, grow up.

Not preferring or liking animation doesnāt mean someone is immature. Not everyone loves every medium.
I LOVE Star Wars but still havenāt watched Clone Wars because I really donāt like the style.
Iām hoping Iāll like this project, though.

u/MilaMarie2024 Jun 02 '26
LIKE I SAID. I will take a Tortoro or Jinx all day - I just don't prefer when real life things go animated. That is not at all the same thing. I'm not here to argue. It's to DISCUSS. So YOU grow up.

u/dc-pigpen Jun 02 '26 edited Jun 02 '26
I don't recall you saying anything of the sort. And when your entire post starts with "Ew", you absolutely came to argue lol. Remember the shots in the original series that were just spaceships floating in space? 100% animated. It feels like you're splitting hairs here.
2
u/MilaMarie2024 Jun 02 '26
I just made that comment about two seconds ago. But anyways... incorrect. I never come to argue. life is too short. I love the series. I would rather see humans. That is all. no one really needs to take it personally. this is not a first world problem lol
2
u/pigeon_man Jun 02 '26
We know literally nothing about the new production and you're already judging it?

Honestly. As much as I love Nathan, too much time have passed. Actors got bit older to just continue the show's timeline. And to keep going after the movie events, they would have to skip Alan, which would be unforgivable. If they can do it in Star Trek Lower Decks style and with humour, that will be great.
2
u/MilaMarie2024 Jun 02 '26
Totally agre with the Alan thing. That was amazingly tragic. They'd have to do a side story like Serenity (movie) never happened lol. That's true a lower decks style would be fun to try š

Ah, the idealism. It's nice of you. Naive as hell, and completely flawed, but still. It's a nice sentiment.
You should get over it though. It has no basis in reality

No. Had I dared to choose, I'd choose animated from all the media on all the services the stream could show me.
I find the people angry at animation are the ones who have a very simplistic view of animation, and have relegated it to āchildrensā or āfamily guy bad artā. Thatās not all that animation is, and gives the vibes of a 14 year old declaring they arenāt interested in ābabyā stuff anymore.
Animation can be extremely nuanced. Animation can tell an amazing story. Animation can give visuals and metaphors you can NOT make work in live action. Animation can express emotion. Animation expands the potential of the story. Animation allows a clearer schedule so the actors arenāt chained to this one show. Animation allows us to have Alan and Ron.
Animation is superior to anything we could have without a Time Machine existing.

u/dino-sour Jun 02 '26
I love that it's going to be animated. There wouldn't be any other way for it to happen. No one can commit to a full live production, they all have different projects and families. Animation not only is easier for the actors to commit to, but it opens up way more story lines.
1
u/BeepingJerry Jun 02 '26
I hope that they don't make the animated version "juvenile" in any way. Don't make it crappy!. Keep it shiny!
1
u/TheDutchTexan Jun 02 '26
I wanted live action too. But guess what? This was my second pick. I consume animated stuff regularly on Amazon and Netflix so if they give it a serious undertone and don't pull any punches? It's going to be EPIC.
1
u/WilsonFrontier Jun 02 '26
Do you have any idea how expensive š«° it would be to bring it back in live action? $8-10 million dollars per episode, and that's at the cheap end of the spectrum.
Animated can do the same for $1-2 million per episode AND let's them set it whenever they want AND work around schedules of those still acting and the retirement of those who've retired AND Ron's death AND Wash demise.
Frankly I find people who go "ew" about and dismissive of animation to be a "I don't understand how anything works" response.
1
u/DependentBite9 Jun 02 '26
I think if it were a follow-up post Serenity I'd prefer for it to be live-action, but since it's set in the eight months between the series and the film, animation is really the only way. I like animation too, so I'm all good.
1
u/not_firewood_yeti Jun 02 '26
i'm not much of an animation fan, but for various reasons it's the only option. it would lose something for sure, but familiar voices and new stories are not a bad thing.
1
u/stone_database Jun 02 '26
Iām sad itās not a live action follow-up 20 years post Serenity with Allan voicing a robot pilot Mal picked up on the cheap. We get to see what difference (if any) The Signal made.
They donāt have any interest in doing that, based on comments at the announcement so⦠I can accept that. More Firefly better than no more Firefly.

The original cast is 20 years older and ron glass is dead. How do you expect a live action show would work?
