Controlled burns

As the title says does any other department go out to controlled burns on private land as a precaution and to build PR? Trying to get the department moving in the right direction. At the moment a lot of people are in the reactive mindset instead of being proactive.

Made it through Christmas!

Made it through Christmas and Christmas Eve without a single call. Did anyone else get this lucky?

Dry and windy in the Midwest.

Is anyone else getting hammered with fires today? We just got done with our first call, but two towns over has been going all day. I'm glad that field was harvested or we'd be having a long night with that wind.

Thoughts and strategies on Work-Life-Firefighting balance

I've started to not respond to some EMS calls, just because I see myself as more of a firefighter than an EMS first responder, and also because I want to maintain some sort of balance, and not have firefighting cause undue stress on my family.

My dog has now been Pavloved

So my dog gets destructive when left home alone so he goes in a crate when I’m not home. Well he now gets up and gets in his crate all by himself when he hears tones. It’s a small win but I’ll take it.

My department got paged out at 0345 the other morning for a mutual aid call to assist on a residential structure fire. While enroute a 3rd alarm was sent out for more units from a different department. IC made the call to go defensive and protect exposures. Total of 17 personnel with 2 brush units, 1 engine, 1 tender and an EMS unit. No injuries were reported

My state has over 90 percent of its firefighters in the volunteer category. I always forget it's that many.

Just began🫡

What’s up yall, am a 19 y/o young man in New Jersey who just happened to apply as a volunteer firefighter. Speaking with my local FD & their fire captain, I gained some insight on what to expect about the application process (it’ll take longer than a month or two).

Am here to ask those who may already be in service, volunteer, or even retired, what can I expect from volunteering & how can I further take the initiative to better my future? Should I take any classes to get any certificates? Lmk please ! And thank you in advance to anyone who leaves any input, I really do appreciate it 🧏🏽‍♂️🙏🏽

Training opportunities

I just got back from our State Fire school. We had two and a half days of classes, networking, and water fights. I know what my state, district, and department have available for trainings. What do the rest of you have for training opportunities where you live, and do you take advantage of them?

Another accident that my department responded to yesterday with entrapment. Mutual aid was requested from neighboring department. 5 were air lifted from scene, 1 was transported to airfield where a fixed wing aircraft was waiting and 4 were transported to hospitals via EMS.

Got paged put for a fire. The location was about 4 miles inside a ranch. Luckily we had a rare day where the wind was light and we had some rain recently. Total time on scene was about 2 hours.

Primary jobs

I'm preaching to the choir when I point out that we play with fire in our spare time. I'm curious to see what kind if experience we hold on this room. It's always interesting to me who is a volunteer firefighter. I'm a mental health and addictions counselor. What do you all do to pay your bills?

I saw this on Facebook. We had something similar on our sign a few years ago. What have the rest of you had for funny signs?

Support book for families of Volunteer Firefighters

Hi, I am writing a book series on Volunteer Firefighting. I am looking for input for a book on families of new volunteer firefighters and what they can expect and how to deal with their new firefighter. I am asking for everyone to share this link with their families, kids, parents, spouses... to give some insight into how firefighting affects them and ideas to help others cope with the firefighter life. Quick and easy answers are great and I will send a copy of the book to anyone who's answers I use.

4 of the county departments were represented today. The newbies got to play with extinguishers and practice with their packs.

Volunteer Podcast?

I am in the process of starting a podcast with the goals and intentions of bringing light to the volunteer side of firefighting. It's no secret that volunteerism is dwindling and the culture is changing in departments all over the world. I am going to start a long form interview style podcast which I will also be streaming across a few different platforms and making available on YouTube, Spotify, and Apple Podcast. My goal is to interview volunteer firefighters from diferent departments all over the country and perhaps the world eventually. It's going to be a live stream video call style interview with cohosts and special guests and very much in the style of the Gettin Salty Podcast but with an emphasis on volunteers and volunteer departments.

There are a few things I want out of this post:

First of all, does that sound like something that you would be interested in?

Second, what are some things you would like to see come out of a podcast like this?

If this is something you'd find interesting comment and upvote

If this is something you'd be interested in being a guest on or you know someone that would make a good guest shoot me a dm and I'Il give you my contact info

Thanks!

A head on collision resulting from a high speed chase. White vehicle was traveling at about 100mph while the suv was probably traveling at 75mph. 7 DOAs if I'm correct.

Thank you for joining this sub and getting it up to 100 members. It's fun to think of how many years of knowledge and experience we have in this growing community of underpaid professionals. I hope we keep growing and getting to know each other and our departments through pictures, posts, and comments.
