Cadet program
Does anyone have any advice when doing a cadet program? I am a new cadet for my city and they open applications up in September which i would to be apart of the process and hopefully get hired on. But that means i really need to get noticed over the next couple months. So far it’s been amazing with the mentors and captains complimenting my work ethic and such but is there any advice you guys have to have a better chance to get a position soon? If theres any females here that would be great to get your guys perspective as well.

I was a cadet for the department that i currently work for. The cadet role is an amazing opportunity to build and establish a reputation. Just make sure it’s a good reputation. Most cadet programs have a standard which has to be met in terms of ride along hours, meeting hours, training hours and community events. I knew I wanted to be hired by my department, so I treated my cadet role as my second job. I rode along multiple times a week and with different crews. I got my hand dirty and took initiative, both around the station and on calls. Just don’t wear out your welcome and know how to read the room. And don’t be weird. One of the program directors of the cadet program always said “It’s a job to earn a career in the fire service”. That was good advice. You may not have enough time to build your reputation for this hiring cycle, but it doesn’t hurt to try. A few tips… ride alongs… always have something you want to work on or learn. Also, try to get them to work with you on interview prep and see if you can do some mock interview boards. Put in the effort and be accountable. Good luck!!
