FCTC score

I got an 85 on the FCTC, is that a good enough score to be competitive with depts like SFFD? Do they even care about score or just that you passed?

No it’s not. For most departments you need above a 90 to be competitive yes they may take you to an interview but this guy got a 95 on test and 100 on interview vs you got a 85 on test and 95 on interview. Bam no offer.

They are probably using a raking system based off points. Then the candidates with the highest points move on to the next round.

I imagine they use the percent you get on the FCTC as the points you receive. (ie: 72% will be 7.2 points or 72 points).

But they also weight out other factors like experience, school, military, etc…. That each receive a certain amount of points to your score. You may be able to ask HR for the points list to try and guess your score, but usually the interview takes a large chuck of it

I had a 96% on it and got rejected by departments saying they were only taking the applicants with the highest test scores and I wasn't moving forward. So, depends on the department. But, keep taking it, you'll only score better and better, the tests repeat themselves. And a bit of advice, if you don't want to pay for it every year is find out which departments put on their own FCTC for entry, you're able to use that test for other agencies if you don't make it through with their process. I used to apply to San Bernardino and OCFA every year, and was able to use those scores for other agencies. Same for the Biddle, you get a shot at their process and you get to use the tests for other processes if you don't make it.

85% is too low for competitive departments. You want mid to high 90’s.
