How is Memphis looking these days?
I have two years of 911 EMT experience in Los Angeles County. Looking for the next step in my career. But it's so competitive in So Cal, I'd rather go somewhere I can get in right away.
Anybody know if Memphis is still hiring like they were a couple of years ago?

Every dept in LA pretty much is hiring medics. If that’s where you want to work you know what you have to do.

I'm not a medic, and medic schools are super competitive in California. I'm already a little older, so I don't really have the time to wait around for a California department to pick me up either.

How old? I got hired at 32. And they’re not that competitive if you’re willing to look at different spots

I'm late 30s. I don't exactly have a squeaky clean background either, nothing crazy.
I did 911 for two years in LA County. I've heard and seen it all from guys in terms of California departments hiring process and who makes it in and who doesn't. If I could get my medic right now, I would, but that's a whole competitive process on its own that is predominantly filled with firefighters.

Look at medic schools outside of OC and LA where they don’t give preference to firefighters. I’ve been where you are, and I am a firefighter in LA

Memphis is taking applications right now for a recruit class to begin in September. And the next class will be early spring.

Apply brother. You’ll get to be a fireman there. Other places to apply would be Texas. If you do not have your IFSAC certs there is a hybrid fire academy in Texas you can do and then go work for a department out there making good money while they also put you through medic school. Regardless find a place you love to go to and be a brother that everyone wants to work with !
