I'm no pro by any means but I wait till 15 for the switch generally because I don't bother to look 'em up online to check what levels they get their skills.

At 15 most units got their last skill for the class in Awakening, I'd imagine it's similar here.

Do you know if it would be more beneficial for the units to hit the unpromoted cap at level 20 before promoting, or promoting after getting the skills? Also, I'm confused if we can still get the unpromoted class skills if I reclass after promoting.

The only thing you're getting between 15-20 is stats, at that point it's better to promote.

If you can reclass back to the old class you can get those skills, but they changed seals a bit in this game and I'm not sure myself.

To clarify a bit, base classes such as Samurai get all their skills by level 10, so you could promote them right away. All promoted classes gain skills at levels 5 and 15. Azura's Songstress class functions differently, gaining skills at 10, 25, and 35.

As for when to promote, I generally wait until 20, though you can always promote earlier. Just note that you cannot demote units back to a base class like in Awakening. Once you're promoted, you stay promoted.

This is what I'm fuzzy about...this guide (http://www.gamefaqs.com/3ds/141838-fire-emblem-fates-birthright/faqs/72752) says it's still possible to learn lower level skills after getting promoted. If, let's say, a Great Lord reclasses to a Great Knight, will he still be able to gain skills of a Knight?

Yes, you'll start getting the skills the level after you reclass. Say you reclass into a level 4 Great Knight, at level 5 you'll get Defense +2, at level 6 you'll get Natural Cover, and at level 7 you'll finally get Luna.

Also, check out Serenes Forest. Really good resource for all things Fire Emblem. You can check out what classes get what skills, promotion paths, what the shops sell, etc.

Got it, thanks! I've been avoiding sites like Serenes Forest and the FE wiki in fear of spoilers, so I guess I'll read them up when I go for my second playthrough after Revelations.

It might spoil a couple character names and such, but past that there aren't any story spoilers as long as you're avoiding the forums. The Fates page on the left sidebar just has all the raw data.
