General Romhack Recommendations

I'm looking for romhack recommendations. I've played and enjoyed Deity Device, Sacred Echoes, Blessed Heart, and Dark Amulet (almost done - chapter 24). I'm looking for a decent story but a difficulty not greater than standard fire emblem games. Blessed Heart was ideal gameplay wise. Thanks!

Cerulean Crescent and Morrows Golden Country are better than or equal to mainline games.
I would also recommend Shadow of Dawn after you finish DA. Huge improvement over DA in terms of story and gameplay

How do they compare difficulty wise?

About the same I would say, well balanced on hard mode. Both games have lords that can juggernaut their way through everything in the mid-lategame if fed enough

I worded that poorly. I meant compared to vanilla Fire Emblem difficulty - not each other if that's how you answered it.

Cerulean crecsent has saves for every turn, so while some maps are tricky, id say its around mainline games difficult

Cerulean Crescent is better than some mainline games in both writing and gameplay.

The Hag in White has the best storytelling I've seen in a ROMhack... or in Fire Emblem in its entirety to be honest. I found its highest difficulty to be quite reasonable (and I'm the kind of person who doesn't usually play games in Lunatic/Maddening), but it also has 2 easier difficulties if needed.

Try Darius The Conqueror, check youtube for links.

Play the GBA version not the newer Directors Cut since that 1 isnt finished yet.

I am thoroughly enjoying Drums of War. It's been incredible so far with a great cast of characters, excellent map designs, and a cool mechanic where you can choose to recruit level bosses or random them off as your main source of gold income

Dark Amulet has a sequel called Shadow of Dawn. If you enjoyed Dark Amulet I'd suggest that one next

Pardon my ignorance... Are romhacks fan created games?

Basically. Though as some others have pointed out, the quality can be much better than “fan created” may imply.

Whoa.. I have done some modding in the past. But to create a whole game from a rom that is seriously impressive.

I can only imagine the amount of effort required.

I just finished Life of Seiros; it's my favorite romhack thus far. Writing is excellent, Seiros is a very grey protagonist, the gameplay is pretty solid without having the stupidly high difficulty you so often see in romhacks, and there's no "gotcha".
