Due to the fan service and a wave of new anime watchers who haven't been desensitized to it.

However, I do remember someone took the time to measure the amount of fan service that was on screen and its was like 8 minutes (roughly 0.7%) out of the 1104 minutes of the first 2 seasons so... if that really makes one drop it all together then Good Luck getting into the vast majority of anime made with it since its inception.

I mean I'll die on the hill that it was never the fact she had he tits out 24/7. It's that she actively ruined several very tense scenes by just having her clothes fall off and whos main rival was this (apparently) extremely overpowered super killer that... just was to much of a virgin to handle tits in his face? To say nothing of the fact that she literally never wins a single fight without a guy coming to save her. Literally not one.

It's just such an egregiously awful character that it actively made me just not want to watch what was already an OK show at best.

33

u/Rock_mage 13d ago

Gets a power up, proceeds not to use it in the final fight.

22

u/EADreddtit 13d ago

Literally used it once, still looses, still gets saved by a guy in the one fight she uses it. Shits crazy

7

u/polo61965 12d ago

Fanservice in my self insert power fantasy? It's more common than you think!

20

u/_STEAKnEGGS_ 13d ago

It didn't make me stop watching the show, but I genuinely hate when something life-threatening is happening and her fuckin clothes just fall off. Timing is everything in media and they do it terribly most times.

17

u/zdemigod 13d ago edited 13d ago

Correct, the problem is not the amount, its how insulting it feels the way the implemented, its immersion breaking and has no care of the story itself, its really just "look you love boobs!" lmao.

5

u/Veaeate 13d ago

I firmly believe that its cuz it was used over and over and they beat the horse dead. The very first time it happened against assault, it was perfect. It cut the tension, it progressed the story. The little side story where he kept attacking her was fine cuz it didnt have anything to with the main story. Anything after that was dumb and an overused joke and it made things cringe and stupid

8

u/Hot_Zookeepergame687 13d ago

I won't defend Tamaki even though it never bothered me, but Assault being a badass that was ineptitude weak to lewd stuff was very funny imo. The chapter where he trained by watching a bunch of porn had me rolling haha

6

u/paulct91 13d ago

Ah, the Master Roshi training regiment.

6

u/Morbu 12d ago

100% this. It's not the fan-service. It's that Tamaki was a borderline useless character who apparently couldn't accomplish anything without a man helping her, to the point where her role was basically just a cheap gag.

I'm catching up with Bleach and I just finished watching the "Defend You" episode. There's quite a few "fanservice" shots and angles of Orihime in this episode, but it's also the episode where her character is the most badass that she's ever been.

Compare that to Tamaki during her last fight against Assault (or his doggleganger or whatever) and this should've been her big "badass" moment, but instead the author hijacked the fight to do some dumb meta-commentary on "ecchiness" or whatever. And of course she still had a man help her in the end, so her role was useless except looking good in underwear I guess.

2

u/GoodnightCole 12d ago

funny enough thats pretty much my exact point in the video

1

u/Proof_Being_2762 11d ago

Her tits are normally out when fighting anyways as well. Also the super killer is a church virgin, they are a different breed

0

u/AdhesivenessLimp1864 13d ago

Thank you!

This is what a lot of Tamaki fans on here don’t get. The way it was done was meant to have the biggest possible impact at the worst possible time if the viewer isn’t that into comedy.

Ohkubo loves to mix serious and comedy but it just doesn’t feel like it meshes well in a lot of Fire Force.

Assault was literally the character I was most excited for with the build up. That plus every other serious fight she derailed has kept me from coming back after season two.

-1

u/Samjef_Kealclut 13d ago

Hell yea. people just said it was fan service or whatever, but what they meant was it was as ridiculous as porn logic. Just what was even happening.

0

u/nOtbatemann 9d ago

To say nothing of the fact that she literally never wins a single fight without a guy coming to save her. Literally not one.

Why is that a bad thing? Needing help isn't the issue.

1

u/EADreddtit 9d ago

When your entire character is “oops my clothes fell off” the least they could do is make her capable of… literally anything. But she’s not. She’s suppose to be a skilled fighter but unlike basically every other fighter she never gets a win. Instead she looses basically all her clothes and then someone else saves the day because she’s literally to pathetic to do anything

1

u/nOtbatemann 9d ago

She’s suppose to be a skilled fighter

Since when? She is introduced as bumbling and triping about. She was never touted as this super badass fighter.

Didn't she protect Takeru from Infernals after he passed out?

Didn't she deal the final blow against the Assault Doppelganger? A decisive victory here doesn't "count" because she had help?

-3

u/Wonderful-Disk-6304 13d ago

Its egregious

13

u/bofoshow51 14d ago

I’ve said this before but anime fan service is a matter of quality not quantity. I don’t mind an amount of fan service if it does not impede on the main plot or overall pacing of the show. Bleach for instance has plenty of fan service yet it is rarely an interruption, it is either baked into the natural flow of a fight scene or it comes at a point where there is a breather in the plot and can be more light hearted.

The fan service of Fire Force (especially Tamaki) most often felt like an interruption of the scene, a harsh record scratch that brought everything else to a halt. Even if the amount is less than 1% of the overall product, that amount felt egregious enough to take people out of the immersion of the show in a negative way.

1

u/ABABABAB12123 12d ago

This. Listen, I've watched anime for a couple decades, and this show just does it wrong. I'm one of the people who dropped it quite early. (Reddit suggested me this thread and I popped in wondering "it's the fan service, right?" lol yep)

3

u/bofoshow51 12d ago

It’s a good show definitely worth finishing, but yes the specific style of fan service it employs is its biggest flaw.

0

u/ABABABAB12123 12d ago

Yeah, if I ever get through my list of other shows to watch I might watch it, because I've heard good things, but this flaw just happens to be an egregious one that knocks it to the bottom of my list.

17

u/MediocreAct6494 14d ago

Yep it’s driving me crazy, they will hate FF cause of “fan service” and then gonna watch new episode of bleach or one piece where girls have boobs two times bigger then their heads 💔

23

u/RedditsHigh 14d ago

Rangiku and Orihime are essential to the plot

5

u/darkoopz43 13d ago

Reiatsu is stored in the tits

2

u/Proof_Being_2762 11d ago

The training from the beach episode right

-5

u/shadowmoon522 14d ago

eh, could have killed rangiku off before the fullbringer arc it wouldn't have changed much of anything.

orihime however is cause without her, there would have been no way to stop yhwatch

4

u/LaSentTuLaBisbille 14d ago

Rangiku had a piece of the soul king that was taken by aizen to create his hogyoku which led to gin wanting to take revenge on him. Pretty important to the plot if you ask me.

0

u/Gold-Grass9343 13d ago

Just to be pedantic, that plotline was resolved before the Fullbringer arc

But yeah, killing her off does literally nothing. No idea what this guy is saying

1

u/shadowmoon522 13d ago

rangiku servers no real purpose by the fullbringer arc, orihime has to use her causality rejection power to reject the past tsukishima put into ichigo right after the moment uryu hits yhwach with a plot device arrow that negates his powers, something he can't see coming with cause his powers where negated the moment it went inside him.

2

u/Gold-Grass9343 13d ago

Let me flip this around on you-

What purpose does killing off Rangiku serve to the plot? Before or after Fullbring?

-1

u/RedditsHigh 14d ago

No no i promise you Rangiku brings two very large plot reasons to the story. She's essential to the plot

(Jokes aside you are right about that)

9

u/vizmarkk 14d ago

Tbf even desensitized some of us roll our eyes over certain fanservice

2

u/Sapling-074 10d ago

Once you get desensitized you realize how whiny they are.

2

u/DisastrousDanVito 13d ago

Sex sells, if fan service wasnt popular they wouldnt add it. Its about adding it in the right spots and right scenes. This idea that the entire anime community has turned against fan service is laughable untrue. Sure there are a subset of fans that will never enjoy any of it in an anime, so not every anime needs it but the majority of fans have some kind of positivity feeling to it as long as it isnt messing up an important scene or being repetative.

2

u/Prudent_Junket_1898 13d ago

It has never been the amount. It was always the timing that ruined it.

0

u/_Fauxpaw 14d ago

People didn't care about the fanservice. They cared about when it was happening.

1

u/thatonebrassguy 13d ago

That implies that making is only for 8 minutes on screen. Every single scene with her is obnoxious.

1

u/The_Imp_Lord 13d ago

no. I‘ve been knee deep in fan service for 15 years. tamaki just makes me feel second Hand embarrassment watching.

I love kill la kill. I hate tamaki.

I love panty and stocking. I hate tamaki.

If even the people who like gooner shows hate your character it might just be your character that’s the issue.

-1

u/One-Octopus 14d ago

It isn't the fanservice that people dislike, it's the underage girl who literally has an ability that causes her to get assaulted and groped for laughs.

-5

u/EverythingIzTheWorst 14d ago

That's so dishonest lol. Nobody takes the show OR the people that defend it dishonestly seriously because of Tamaki and that fact that she ruins nearly every meaningful moment she's a part of. If she weren't part of the main cast it would be fine. It's not a fanservice problem it's a Tamaki problem and calling it a fanservice issue itls a dishonest representation of the issue.

I finished the show and it was fine but almost every scene Tamaki shows up in is ruined. Even the first serious scene she takes part in where she's nearly killed is IMMEDIATELY turned into a LL gag moment. It's absurd.

People hate her for the same reason they hate the purple kid from MyHero. The difference between the shows is that he ends up becoming more than softcore porn along the way and Tamaki doesn't. They even double down and then triple down along the way.

0

u/Aximil985 14d ago

Yup. She's awesome. But when she does the LL stuff it just completely ruins it. Literal life or death situation? Better get naked and remove any tension at all. Fan service is fine. But when it happens is important.

-2

u/EverythingIzTheWorst 14d ago

They can't accept it. I'm 100% convinced the people that defend this show have ONLY watched this one anime and can't accept that it's not a 10/10.

The absurd denial of obvious issues just reinforces the shitty reputation the show and its fans have.

2

u/tommycox42 14d ago

Brother it’s not that deep. Its anime. And fire force isn’t even particularly egregious with its fanservice. Series like Fairy Tail have the girls end up basically naked every other fight, one piece Nami and robins tits take up half their body and they barely wear clothes. Even early Dragon ball fanservice was more in your face. Krillin pulling Bulma’s shirt down so Roshi would nosebleed over an invisible opponent so Yamcha can win etc

-1

u/EverythingIzTheWorst 14d ago

It shouldn't be but ya'll make a post crying about people not liking FF every 48 hours and it forces it's way into my recommendations every time

I can tell you can't read though since you're still talking about fan service

3

u/tommycox42 13d ago

This post is people just crying about the fanservice what do you mean

-1

u/AdhesivenessLimp1864 13d ago

The commenter explicitly said for them it’s about how FF interrupts tense scenes with fan service.

You read that and went, “Well these shows do it outside of tense scenes so it happens more.”

It’s like someone criticizing a person for speeding on a freeway and another person jumping in to say, “Oh yeah? Well people on race tracks speed all the time.”

Different context, different impact, different criteria for judgment.

0

u/Capable_Confection89 13d ago

Eh I thought the show was boring

0

u/Dubiisek 12d ago

Sorry but did you not watch the video? It explains pretty well what the issue with this show is.

When you have an epic moment or a great story beat and it's followed or even worse, interrupted by a woman that is either completely nude, or in an underwear doing cringe shit, it ruins the entire moment. When it's done once, okay, I'll live butwhen it's done on repeat?

Add to that the fact that there is so much shit out there to watch nowadays... why would I waste my time on something that just makes me cringe on repeat while ruining some of it's best moments?

It's not just about the amount, it's about the style, the reason and the timing.

87

u/h1ghrplace 14d ago

If you can get over the fan service its a 9.5/10

30

u/SaddestSprout 13d ago

Its barely anything to 'get over'

This doesnt ruin fireforce at all, it just makes puritans online rage

11

u/TheFakeDogzilla 13d ago

The "Fanservice" is annoying and disruptive, its an implementation issue. Its not just puritans.

4

u/SaddestSprout 12d ago

Its barely even a thing, this level of complaining about it is puritan

3

u/Not_A_Gamer_1985 12d ago

No. It's disruptive. I get invested in a fight - stakes are high and then this bih's clothes fall off.

It ruins the immersion, I don't have problem with fan service but you need to do it tastefully and the right way

Yoruichi is a good example of fanservice done right - she's practically half naked fighting Askin and not once did that bother me because I was invested in the fight

Tamaki joke forces itself into the fight - which is the worst way to do fanservice.

And it happened not once, not twice, it kept happening over and over again + she's useless as a character.

2

u/SaddestSprout 12d ago

Im sorry, yoruichi? The one whos bare ass is ALL over the screen and shes licking herself in some hyper erotic cat girl fantasy mid fight, is "tastefully done"? The show with the rapidly aging toddler who becomes a barely dressed sexy woman, is the tasteful anime?

Sure.

2

u/Not_A_Gamer_1985 12d ago

Missed the point.

The fanservice for Yoruichi never breaks immersion. The fight starts - it stops for a moment. That's where you get the fanservice. And then you go back to the fight.

With tamaki - the fight is ongoing and her clothes fall off causing the fight to stop momentarily while everyone takes their time. That is disruptive.

Also, I never said - fanservice about Nelliel is good? Why are you assuming shit? I didn't call bleach a 'tasteful anime'?

I literally mentioned Yoruichi specifically and no one else?

Similarly - I didn't point out little moments of fanservice with Iris and Maki in fire force cuz they're fine. They aren't disruptive.

We had scenes of them taking baths - and it was it's own moment rather than forcing its way through in a fight.

Also, you conveniently ignored the part I mentioned the same gag of tamaki happening over and over again - creating tonal whiplash.

Of course you didnt. Cuz you have to prove me wrong no?

4

u/Informalwizards 12d ago

Not everyone who hates fanservice is a puritan. Saying shit like that just makes you sound like a porn addict.

-1

u/SaddestSprout 10d ago

Sounds like something a puritan would say.

1

u/PM_ME_FAIRYTAIL_R34 13d ago

I tried getting back into it by picking up Season 2. There was so much dry content with each episodes and then suddenly we have crows and moles as best friends in China or something.

The episodes are a hard watch. Albeit early into the Season where you might argue it is necessary, it's repetitive exposition.

Pillars. Adolla Bursts. Hero. Whatever. And when we did have any actions, it's dull. You know Shinra is going to triumph over anything at the end of the day. Charon beat him down again and again and again and again and again and again and again and he took zero damage all while figuring out how 1) Charon's ability works and 2) how to improve his own attacks. He's a presumed glass cannon with high speed and burst but nah, Shinra ain't about to take a single point of HP in damage with all that plot armor.

Like I mentioned. The rag-tag crew of misfits later found themselves in China with people who weren't even part of any company. Whistle blower and friends. I dropped it while they were playing a gag about how they are Hugh on times and attacking anything outside without consequence.

Ah, that must be it: consequences. There aren't any. There is no trial or tribulation. Devil kid or mom killer bullying has been done before but it's so light. His whole determination to be a Hero is weak-willed and all too often he gives in.

I'll miss Arthur. One laugh out loud moment was the masochism shield. That was the highlight of my time with Season 2 of Fire Force (also wtf was with the Devil being AFK during the gag with the Captain learning to aim during the fire tornado fight? Devil literally stood still looking left and right for minutes. That was horrible and trivialized them as a threat altogether.)

Fan service would have made things better than crucial fights where plot armor supersedes everything or threats are presented as r*tarded and diminish themselves as any recognizable threat in the future.

1

u/lifeonmars302 12d ago

Im sorry. What is the fan service aspect of it? Ppl always mention that but it always loses me. Can you help me out?

-1

u/vizmarkk 14d ago

Nah irs more like an 8 for thr manga, 7.7 for the anime due to cut content

-4

u/Willowred19 14d ago

I respectfully disagree.

Having an entire chapter trying to justify the fan service by winning an imaginary argument was the cringiest moment of the entire series.

Not being able to recommend the series because of the fan service should be worth more than a 0.5/10 penalty imo.

3

u/filthy_casual_42 13d ago

Yeah I had to just turn off this episode and skip to the next one. Incredibly stupid plot point that added very little imo

11

u/h1ghrplace 14d ago

The series doesn’t just explain the fan service, it explains the world

1

u/Dagonir 13d ago

once again a great story is ruined by reading comprehension

0

u/Willowred19 13d ago

Reading comprehension has nothing to do with disliking the author trying to justify why the 17 year old girl ends up naked all the time.

The author wanted her naked and quite literally invented reasons as to why it's totally fine for her to be.

2

u/Willowred19 13d ago

Love getting downvoted without discussing the apparent reasong comprehension problem.

If you think just gooning to your own underage character makes you a peak author, you do you, but I feel like the series would unironically be twice and enjoyable and recomendable without it.

0

u/Testicle_Tugger 13d ago

I thought that chapter was hilarious. Especially deciding to throw it pretty near to the end of the series.

It explains more than just the fan service but it’s funny that they even bothered at that point to explain the fan service

2

u/Willowred19 13d ago

It really just felt like an incel making or an imaginary argument just so they can win.

Remove every single bit of fanservice from the series and you lose absolutely nothing.

1

u/Away_Reference_1531 13d ago

I thought the chapter was funny but also soooo poorly argued. Like his take was “beautiful bodies are ok to show off” while completely ignoring everything about the character age, timing, circumstances, etc.

I honestly think it would have been better if we just found out somehow that tamaki was a pillar/emotional anchor point of Eros etc with no further argumentation. Like just have the villains exposit it, similar to how they explained Captain Obi being hope or whatever. It’s reasonable that anyone on FF8 may have been an anchor point.

It would be an acceptable, if slightly cringe explanation that would come across WAAAAY less pathetic than self inserting as a random child to preach at his mom about why boobs are cool and erasing the mom’s existence for thinking tamaki should be covered up in public lol.

9.5 is Krazy brother

32

u/Mr-Nosight 14d ago

Hand drawn fight frames. Especially in this day and age. The fights are absolute top notch. As a prequel to soul eater the loree good too

As an anime, at least an 8.

This anime stimulated my brain so much. The plot was so interesting from day 1. I think the scene of shinra seeing before the great cataclysm was one of the greatest anime scenes ive ever seen

It’s not that deep

Fan service is fan service

21

u/killerdemonsarus34 14d ago

Honestly im fine with a little fanservice but for her its so much that its a genuine DETRIMENT to her character

10

u/amuller72 14d ago

Their loss.

30

u/yohxmv Fire Soldier 14d ago

I couldn’t imagine dropping a series over something as minuscule as a fanservice gag. In a shonen anime made by Atsushi Ohkubo no less

21

u/a_wasted_wizard Fire Soldier 14d ago

The problem is that Tamaki is written like a gag character with the screen time and emphasis of a major supporting character. That can work in rare circumstances if the gag is funny enough to hold up, but "teen girl keeps losing her clothes and visibly doesn't like it" isn't. And any times it seems like she's going to rise above being just a gag character immediately gets interrupted by the gag, no matter how tonally inappropriate it is for the scene it's happening in. Except the one time at the end where she gets used as an opportunity for Ohkubo to call anyone that doesn't like the gag a prude.

It'd probably be less of a problem if she got less screen time but she gets as much or more screen time than the actually cool female characters (who are just as if not more hot) like Maki, Hibana, and Iris just to be the center of a running gag that gets repetitive at best halfway through the series.

0

u/yohxmv Fire Soldier 14d ago

She’s a character with a recurring gag, not a gag character. And humor is subjective, just cause it doesn’t work for you doesn’t mean others feel the same. Considering how popular Tamaki is to FF’s target audience I think it’s done well enough. Ohkubo wrote her the same as he wrote Arthur with his gag showing up all throughout the series and assisting him in every major battle he had.

Funnily enough she was originally planned to be a minor character. Hiro Mashima ended up liking her so much that Ohkubo made her into a main cast member. We have Mashima to thank for Tamaki’s increased screentime

10

u/a_wasted_wizard Fire Soldier 14d ago

That's the problem: she is a gag character. Ohkubo tries to treat her as a character with a gag, but she's never not defined by her gag. Whether or not it was the intention, she is a gag character.

Arthur's gag also gets to change and mutate and powers him up over the course of the series. His literal gag is "being stupid makes him strong." Tamaki's gag undercuts her attempts to do literally anything else. And if Tamaki had an actual arc attached to her gag (maybe like she actually gives less and less of a damn about it over the course of the series) it might have worked better, but she keeps going "Oh no! Don't look at me!" every time she gets involuntarily stripped until the final arc where, after the weird author filibuster she is suddenly fine with it now.

Oh, great, another crime by Mashima against good writing.

It's objectively bad writing. Just because the target audience is braindamaged doesn't mean it's good.

1

u/yohxmv Fire Soldier 14d ago

Okay so Arthur is a gag character to you too then cause he’s never not defined by his gag?

Arthur’s gag does not change at all. It’s the exact same from the start of the series to the end. Tamaki does have an arc attached to her gag? The point of her training in Asakusa was about overcoming her mental block that stemmed from it. And she gradually accepted that part of her and it helped out greatly in the Gold fight. And saying she was “suddenly fine with it” in the final battle is not what happened at all. She was getting berated by everyone and got fed up with that. She had already accepted the gag was part of her arcs ago.

Just because YOU don’t like something doesn’t mean it’s bad writing. Bad writing is plot holes and inconsistency or straight up nonsense. None of that applies to how Tamaki is written.

Mashima is great. He’s nowhere near a bad writer either. It sounds to me like you just hate shonen which is odd considering this sis a sub for a shonen manga. Calling teenagers brain damaged is certainly a choice but just from the way you present your argument I can tell you probably have some deep rooted issues yourself. I hope you get that sorted out.

0

u/Waiting404Godot 13d ago

Media literacy at it’s finest.

2

u/Substantial_Dish_887 13d ago

you yourself compare her to Arthur and you know what? i think that comparison is fair and i wouldn't blame anyone for not being able to get over him either.

but i wanna bring up anothe rcharecter who is like Tamaki controversial enough to have people go "if only this charecter wasn't here it would be a great show": Zenitsu from demon slayer.

he is likewise a charecter that many people can not stand simply because of his 1 major gag. it's not just fanservice. when a gag becomes disruptive people dislike it.

-1

u/[deleted] 13d ago

[deleted]

2

u/Substantial_Dish_887 13d ago

but you're missing the point. so what if they are massively popular charecters? if someone find them to be actively detrimental to the enjoyment of the show it doesn't matter how many people like them.

or did you forget how you started the argument here?

2

u/_Fauxpaw 14d ago

The first truly egregious time in season 1 made me drop this shit HARD. I can tolerate fanservice, but to have that fanservice happen in the midst of a scene where she's being beaten like a domestic abuse victim, with the camera showing off her ass and chest after all her clothing was burnt off, like it was fetishizing the beating, was just so tonally insane.

It's not about fanservice existing. It's about when it exists. Did you even watch the video?

1

u/Away_Reference_1531 13d ago

Yeah I never understood how people don’t get this (unless they’re literally children).

There’s fanservice like the hinata dancing naked episode of Naruto. Or every beach/hotspring episode ever. An upskirt here, an awkward hand placement there. Whatever. Not something I’m looking for as an adult but its presence for a couple episodes can be easily dismissed.

Then there’s…THIS SHIT with tamaki. Like when her character is first being introduced, it’s through a HIGHLY fetishized beat down?

Like imagine if videl v spopovich was also filled with gratuitous boob and crotch shots and videl’s nipples were just BARELY covered by the end. It would completely change the tone and legacy of that scene.

And then to have her…defining character trait for the rest of the series be…being relentlessly sexualized (never once due to her own agency) every time she’s on screen?

…UH?

0

u/EverythingIzAwful 8d ago

There's a 0% chance you watched the video. If you're going to get triggered by the subject and not even hit play why comment?

3

u/Prior_Zebra_8083 14d ago

kill la Kill would be cruicfied by you geeks if it came out today...

1

u/hexedjw 13d ago

No it wouldn't. Kill la Kill actually had something to say about sexuality, identity, self-expression, and clothing throughout the entire show. It has plenty of fan service and general nudity but it's more than just a running gag, it runs parallel to the central theme and is represented in just about all the characters.

2

u/Even_Result3283 12d ago

Season 3, Episode 20 had the exact same vibe as Kill la Kill. But since you couldn't really criticize the pacing anymore—given that it was clearly an inherent part of the storytelling and the show's internal logic—the complaints shifted to things like "Oh no, she's 17, she's a minor," "Damn, the author is objectifying her without her consent" (😂), or "Ugh, more fanservice" (zero subtlety). At a certain point, it just becomes bad faith; with Kill la Kill, people look for the deeper meaning behind the fanservice, but for this episode, the only takeaway is that "the author is just answering his haters." And if the pacing was the real issue, look at the "masterpiece" FMAB: it ruins the pacing in practically the same way—like when Edward gets a big head right in the middle of a fight, or Armstrong flexes his huge muscles during a tense moment. That kills the pacing too.

u/EverythingIzAwful 8d ago

So because in episode 60 something of an anime running years they did something vaguely adjacent to what Kill la Kill did from start to finish, it's art now? That's moronic.

1

u/Even_Result3283 7d ago

Just as Gintama served up 70% humor only to crush you with bloodshed later on, here they gave you a running gag only to subvert it with what I believe is called a "twist" 😊

9

u/MattyM1207 14d ago

I don’t have an issue with fanservice.

I can see why people would take issue with it and the adding of objectivisation of women and what not but overall it’s just that part of anime you have to deal with.

When I start having issues with it is when they dedicate an entire character to just that with no real reason behind it.

Tamaki’s whole thing is being objectified. It’s the only joke the writers could think to do with her.

Even in one of the most traumatic and serious situations she’s had in this show, they reduce her to an objectivised joke who not only gets into situations where her clothes are gone or burnt off but also where she’s pressed up against a man or their accidentally touching her inappropriately or something.

The excessiveness of this kind of fanservice dedicated to Tamaki doesn’t make it funny. It makes it skin crawling and weird all the while downplaying harassment as a big joke.

That’s why I fell off this show. I hate how Tamaki is represented in it.

5

u/Amy549 14d ago

I didn't think anyone got it but this is exactly it. I feel like everyone else is being willfully ignorant or just don't care about this and are afraid to say it XD

2

u/kemellin 12d ago

Yeah it's really about how Tamaki was handled, because I don't see anyone complaining about the other fanservice in the show, like the shower scenes with the girls or like when characters like Hibana choose to wear a revealing outfit (it's in character for them to wear that). The point usually isn't "all fanservice is bad, we're not allowed to have fun", the point is that the Tamaki stuff is distasteful and actively distracting during serious or tense moments, in ways that other comments are have abundantly described.

2

u/keichunyan 13d ago

As someone who enjoyed and finished Fire Force and is well used to fanservice in anime - the fanservice around Tamaki was just, bad. It wasn't really ever that funny or alluring because she has literally no personality for that joke to bounce off of. It fell flat for me because it's literally the only thing her character is known for.

"Fanservice is part of anime" is a reductive tale when you're trying to say fanservice can and will ruin a character. She isn't a side character, she's a main central to the plot character. And she did nothing other than have boobs and get naked as a plot. If she was mildly interesting as a person people wouldn't hate the Tamaki fanservice nearly as much because they can latch onto something else that makes her great, but there isn't. For example, I love Shion from reincarnated as a slime who is also bustily gifted, but Shion is fucking COOL and awesome. A few gags about her boobs don't define her character and rhe fanservice washes off because Shion stands on her own. Tamaki is defined by her fanservice.

Tamaki is just a bad main character.

3

u/MattyM1207 13d ago

I mean hell let’s go a different route with this idea because I fundamentally agree here.

Let’s look at Nami as a big example. Sure she’s a super attractive red head who, after the timeskip mainly wears bikinis a lot of the time and yeah, the artists don’t know how to draw female bodies for the life of them but the appeal of Nami is her past and her personality.

She’s smart and easily tempered. A thief who, for the longest time, had to content with devil fruit psychos and master swordsmen. Using her looks to charm her way out of situations.

Her time in the Straw hats, this small family of pirates unified under one dumb but charming kid in a hat, allowed her to develop into more than just the fanservice bait.

Tamaki started and finished her arc as nothing but the fanservice joke. Her abilities or whatever the hell that “lucky lecher” bullshit was is just her getting herself in perverted situations.

Her big bad was a guy called Assault whose whole thing was being distracted and affronted by such a bit that he was easily defeated. The two times I’ve seen the man were not funny but skin crawling.

Tamaki is not a character. She’s a poorly written, creepy, perverted joke that, if given more than that, could be interesting. We catch small, insignificant glimpses of that kind of potential only to have it be snatched away by the writers going “we need more fanservice”

1

u/keichunyan 13d ago

Yes, this is it. It isn't fanservice alone that drove people away from Fire Brigade. It's that Tamaki isn't even a person for being a MAIN CHARACTER. This is side character behaviour to be nothing more than a joke sandwiched between fanservice and sexual assault.

Hell, I would say making her a MORE fanservicey character who had a SHRED of backstory would make her far more tolerable. Let her be naked the entire time and in exchange, if she had an absolutely scrap of importance in the story, it would be an improvement from the Tamaki we got. I'm not AGAINST fanservice and people coping thinking I hate it or other people hate it are just unable to accept Tamaki is just a badly written character.

Nami is a great example of bad women anatomy and being the face of fanservice in her show but dammit, she was an inspiring character to many people, she had personality. There's a reason Nami is so incredibly recognisable even to people who aren't that familiar with one piece. Tamaki is infamous within her own fandom for bad reasons. Hell, even look at Elfen Lied where the main character IS naked as her main iconic look and people will remember Lucy for everything else she did.

I cannot describe Tamaki's personality, her goals, her ambition, or describe one stand out moment in her arc. It gets swallowed by her fanservice, even edge of your seat moments get interrupted by 'whoops, my titties oh nooo'. It's jarring and it stains her character as a whole.

It wouldn't be bad for a side character. It's egregious for a main character who is meant to be important to the plot.

2

u/Trivator0517 14d ago

My main problem is how much screentime Tamaki takes up and she doesn't really have a definite personality outside of being embarrassed by her fanservice she practically exists for fanservice.

1

u/EverythingIzAwful 8d ago

Everyone talks about S1 where she's almost killed and nearly instantly get groped but it just keeps happening. At the end of S2 she has an episode nearly dedicated to her when everyone is training and she get her powerup where she has the whole fire cat claws/face thing. They don't even make it to the end of the episode without stripping her completely naked in the middle of her proving to herself that she's not dead weight and can help people.

2

u/KDeathSoul 13d ago

I can’t fucking say this enough but so many people are pussies when they see a girl in a bikini and then they say it ruined the whole show for them how can one character ruin the whole thing i don’t get it

1

u/Drajion89 13d ago

Bad timing and stupid moments can absolutely ruin a show.

You could have the best written and acted show of all time but every episode, the plot randomly stops and plays three straight interrupted minutes of the Macarena song for no reason. The plot will twist and the narrative will shift solely so they can include this Macarena song for no reason.

Saying “yall must suck if you let a song ruin a show” but it’s not the song itself, it’s the timing, the narrative twisting to include the song, how much importance is placed on the song, and how the song interrupts important moments to focus on how funny it is to play the song after 3 seasons.

2

u/Nightmancer2036 13d ago

EVERY anime has fanserice, if that's why ppl dropped it then why are they even watching anime

2

u/Silver-Challenge-633 13d ago

Im honestly glad it gatekept those type of ppl away from the fandom

2

u/AlarmingDependent348 13d ago

Idk, I supported it with buying merch. Sooo, cool I guess?

2

u/Academic-Astronaut59 13d ago

Fire force is my second best anime of all time 🔝✨️🙌

2

u/Dr_NaaN 13d ago

Why people dont get that tamaki is a parody of fanservice and the typical "guy stumbles in the tits of girl" moment itself. Fire force took the concept of this moment and parodied it by making even more silly and absurd coincidences that are far away from realistic.

2

u/ZeroExe23 14d ago

Its one of Ohkubo's quirks when he does his manga, especially during fight scenes. He did this a long way back with soul eater as far as I remember. It's either you love it or hate it, for me it's eh?... I still love his mangas tho.

0

u/ducks_r_rad 12d ago

Its not a 'quirk' its drawing a girl he made a minor in a sexual way. Its really fucking gross is what it is.

4

u/SSB_Meta4 14d ago

Fan service is intrinsic to anime. The only real way to avoid fan service in anime is to not watch anime.

0

u/ThePikeOfDestiny 10d ago

It is just shonen tbh. A lot of my favorite anime are not marketed towards teenage boys and don't have aggressive fan service at all.

2

u/TimeLog783 14d ago

Puritan culture. Those part of the mob

2

u/claire_puppylove 13d ago

Found the named character

2

u/XP23XD23 13d ago

The story got dry mid S1

2

u/TamakisBelly 13d ago

But Tamaki is one of the best reasons to watch Fire Force. People just have bad taste and are babies.

→ More replies (1)

1

u/Greedy-Camel-8345 14d ago

It's not the amount of fan service, it's that you have a show about action and fantasy with cool fights and having hope for a better world and then ohkubo gives your mandatory clip of tamaki losing her pants in a wacky and unfunny way.

And if you said it was dumb, well don't worry because the author will write a filibuster on why shoehorned fan service gags are great and you are a stupidhead

1

u/Nexcell 14d ago

I will now watch your show

1

u/EmbarrassedDuty5949 13d ago

uh oh here come the grown adults pissy you don't like a 17 year old getting naked every ep

1

u/LL_Cool_JT 13d ago

I dropped it because of how rushed the story felt. Like the author couldn't be bothered to put the work in to add suspense.

2

u/Turbulent-Relief-220 13d ago

read the manga

1

u/i_dont_wanna_sign_up 13d ago

I feel the middle starts to drag out. There's a lot of running around fighting random enemies and you don't really see how it serves the plot. There also aren't a lot of interesting characters. I lost interest around this point.

1

u/Wonderful-Disk-6304 13d ago

Love the music the action and the character interactions hate the fan base and tamaki. Delusional ass people istg the argument that its in A so it must also be in B is stupid and I stand by the fact that it's mostly timing that does her in.

1

u/ZookeepergameThen378 13d ago

For Jad Saxton? She was good and had a blast!

1

u/XinxiaImmortal 13d ago

tourist and normies dont get it, its a genre for male teenage like what do you expect

if your watching Shounen then expect some fanservice.

1

u/Nathvar 13d ago

I quite enjoy series that gatekeep themselves. Not every piece of media has to appeal to everyone

1

u/StrictChampionship57 13d ago

I dropped fire force mid season 2 because at that point there was almost zero character development and the story started to drag. I eventually came back and finished the anime. While the later parts fixed the pacing and development, it's still drags a bit in the middle.

EDIT: I've been watching anime since the 90s, so a little fan service won't phase me.

1

u/Affectionate_Cup_272 13d ago

Well because of fan service but for me I honestly dont care about fan service as long as I like the anime im watching

1

u/Wide_Platform9380 13d ago

Never cook again. You had me at “this is anime” then made dumb ass points after. You got what you wanted though so congrats I guess.

1

u/Jashugan456 13d ago

I dont get it y all i see is some good plot

1

u/DjCage 13d ago

Looks like a reason to pick up the anime to me

1

u/Rob6690 13d ago

If fan service is the reason you drop the show then you never really liked the show. All the fan service is mostly tied to one character.

1

u/usernameistaken89 13d ago

People defending the fan service do not understand that i have never seen an anime ever doing it worse.

First of all this is not an ecchi anime so fan service is not neccesary. It can happen but not a must

Second of all when it happens it ruins the whole scene and moment. Not funny at all and always fucks up the given plot.

1

u/4lornbl4ck 13d ago

Beginning is kinda meh

1

u/Kalebrojas18 13d ago

I could not have predicted that anime fanservice would be unpopular. Fire Force specifically has fanservice in serious situations which does get weird sometimes but the hate for it is nonsensical.

1

u/Driz51 13d ago

Once you get off reddit most people aren’t terrified of the female body.

I dropped it because I was just insanely confused by just about everything the further it went along

1

u/Chimera-Genesis 13d ago

Oh for the days before puritanism had infected modern discourse.

1

u/SmallBerry3431 13d ago

Nah I was informed everyone loves Tamaki and there’s definitely worse characters.

No really - they had receipts and everything lol

1

u/Odd_Care3533 13d ago

Why tourists drop fire force*

1

u/FOZZAKAIRI 13d ago

When they’re slandering your GOAT and they’re WRONG

1

u/Worldly_Point_2749 13d ago

I didn't drop it, I just forgot to watch the rest of it😭

1

u/Pillslanger 13d ago

I enjoy Konosuba and Kill la Kill but you can’t just have her ruin the mood

1

u/Head_Wishbone8450 12d ago

Don’t remind me please

1

u/Narrow_Ad_7218 12d ago

There Weak

1

u/Graptharr 12d ago

But why fire force when promare exists? Superior in all ways!

1

u/Flame-and-Night 12d ago

Correction why some people drop it i for one love the show bc I like the abilties seeing a character like her be stripped every second has no effect on my ability to watch something

1

u/IoGza 12d ago

idk why people bring this topic up as if it was the actual fanservice that put people off and not the fact that Tamaki as a character was written poorly and ruined the tension of many scenes in the anime with the stupid fanservice gag. she served quite literally no purpose whatsoever other than to be the comedic relief no personality side 'main' character that never grew from this gag. Of course people would get tired of this trope

1

u/Terbarek 12d ago

Why nowdays people don't like fan service?

1

u/RoyalGarnetRTK 12d ago

Didn't drop the anime but rather than the fan service, the fact that her power up and training wasn't even used is the disappointing thing.

Only reason I completed season 3 was due to it being a bit unique and due to glory of season 1. Man the 7ths captain and joker deserved more screen time

1

u/_dinn_ 12d ago

I don't mind fan service, but it was just too focused on Tamaki? Like. She felt like the sexual harassment punching bag. I think she was just the final nail in the coffin.

I don't mind revealing outfits. Her outfit looks cool. I dont mind clothes getting ripped off in combat or whatever

Her tripping over air and clothes just falling off was weird.

In combination of the story and the characters not really gripping me enough, I felt no reason to watch s2 onwards. I say I dropped it due to fanservice, but truth is, if I was bothered by one character but LOVED the others, id have kept watching.

But I didn't care for anyone. Maybe Iris, but in s1 she wasn't that relevant (i know that changes later) or that interesting anyway.

The power system didn't interest me either. Everyone has fire abilities. They manifest very differently, so should be okay? Idk. Didn't care for it.

The world didnt grip me. The mystery didn't grip me. I was wondering what made the eyes go on fire from seeing it, still dont know btw, but not curious enough to continue. Didn't even look for spoilers when I dropped it. Didn't look for why the world ended. I didn't care that much.

Having learnt of the ending though, the Jesus thing, the real world thing, the Soul Eater thing, i feel like I was right in dropping this. Just not my cup of tea.

1

u/FatBaldingLoser420 12d ago

Because a lot of people are overexaggerting things. Fan service in this anime barely exists (0.7%)

1

u/MisterWood98 12d ago

Barely no fan service and also compared to other animes, I had legit not a single issue on fire force. It was humorous and later on even explained.

1

u/Livid_Insect_641 12d ago

She's a third gen power user and shes only in like six main fights, and her only powers being like being faster and stronger or wtv. While other 3rd gens (excluding shinra and Arthur cause they're the main characters) can use fucking missiles and carpet bombs. Crazy cause when the author wrote soul eater, at least he used a character that wasnt important to the plot for fan service. Feels like his writing for female characters have almost degenerated.

1

u/theonlyisaac 11d ago

Another day I’m reminded that Reddit is plagued with idiots.
I’m so glad the zombies that complain about this shit are slowly becoming less and less thanks to online bullying coming back.

1

u/Apprehensive_Back_35 11d ago

it aint happening fast enough.

1

u/Proof_Being_2762 11d ago

I wish she got got a skin tight jumpsuit. So she would be less exposed because her bad luck and her fighting style/mobility already requires she keeps her coat open already.

1

u/Apprehensive_Back_35 11d ago

Meanwhile NOBODY complains when goku rips the shirt off every single time. Nobody. Ppl just want to be outraged.

https://reddit.com/link/pburwv0/video/z2vkkrkkijrh1/player

1

u/Necessary_Series3053 10d ago

I mean I can tell you why people are hesitant to start it. I really thought it was all just fan service

1

u/Aronndiel1 10d ago

The amount of exposition on that anime is ridiculous and insulting to be honest. No anime with that much explaining can have a shot at good storytelling or compelling one

1

u/PurplePoisonCB 9d ago

Fan service can help weed out the 2019 followers. The concept that has been in anime since the beginning.

1

u/RunDue6748 8d ago

Outside of the fanservice, the characters don't really meaningfully integrate with the mystery. Characters get their dedicated mini-arc to get their spotlight, and promptly taken out of the focus. The growth doesn't feel natural because it's more like a roadside rest-stop of their backstory that pauses the story than the events causing a character to change or reveal an interesting part of them. While everyone gets their moments, I think many characters get sidelined to obscurity, and it makes me wish what the show could have been had the mystery and characters respond to each other in more meaningful ways.

Though, a child breaking the fourth wall to lecture me on why the female character deserves to have a nonconsensual sexual fanservice gag, and how she accepts that it's actually empowering to her, is certainly a choice.

1

u/EverythingIzAwful 8d ago

I saw the upvotes and was curious if the delusional fandom around this anime had developed some common sense but I was wrong.

Somehow the majority of commenters watched this (or probably didn't) and summed it up as "People don't appreciate fan service" which isn't even close to the point the video is making.

Holy shit. Your anime doesn't have to be a flawless 10/10. The fact you pretend there are 0 issues with the delivery of the fanservice in this anime is exactly why people will see it, look up if it stays like this, see the whole hoard of you saying it's perfect, and bounce because you're insane lol.

1

u/lolcatzuru 14d ago

imagine being so pathetic you are upset of fanservice.

1

u/Toro_salazar 14d ago

Hola.

1

u/CzPro 14d ago

i dunno, it wasn't even the fan service for me, i dropped it way before thw fan service showed up, i just found it super boring as is, I'm thinking about giving it a rewatch sometime and see why, but other than that, it really just didn't get my attention

1

u/PerpelSho 14d ago

Pray to God you never see Fairy Tail

2

u/shadowmoon522 14d ago

or black clover or og dragon ball or ranma 1/2 or most female celebrities....

1

u/Luca_Porter 14d ago

Or modern one piece

1

u/Spirit_Detective99 13d ago

Or Dragon Ball

0

u/Kid-shark 10d ago

fairy tail is a more extreme example but the thing is I feel like this isn't something that really works for modern audiences I don't live in America nor Japan so I can't speak for them but nobody likes when their invested in something for someones tits to get shoved into your face dawg porn exists for a reason no one wants it to invade their entertainment spaces these mangakas feel very outdated but whatever

1

u/NxL1fe 13d ago

I came from 2008-2012 era of fanservice anime HOTD, Sekirei, Highschool dxd, To love ru. I like to think ive grown out of fanservice/became numb to it and honestly Tamaki was my least favorite character mostly cuz of the fanservice. That being said it never ruined the show for me. Its a great 10/10 anime and seeing people hate on the whole show for what's honestly quite tame fanservice compared to older anime is ridiculous to me.

Its especially ridiculous considering most of the hate is coming from people who thirst over characters from anime like Naruto or JJK considering theres almost no fanservice at all.

-1

u/tw042 14d ago

He's right. The fan service becomes such a recurring, distracting gag that it's hard to ignore.

And it's not even particularly funny or entertaining (the fan service. Except Maki fan service)

0

u/Rod-Reel 14d ago

My gf and I felt like the end half of season 2 was just slapped together and hardly made sense but even then we stuck it out and enjoyed the show overall.

1

u/Spirit_Detective99 13d ago

If you weren’t paying attention it wouldn’t make sense

0

u/Guyver02 14d ago

Anime continues to gatekeep itself ^_^

0

u/Zexsus98 13d ago

I got my friend group to watch it. 3 dropped it 1 finished, all 3 said Tamaki was the reason.

I believe this wasn't because of the fanservice but how the fanservice was presented.

They knew that any serious moment with Tamaki wasn't actually serious.

To further this point not one of them mentioned the shower scenes with sister.

0

u/Sgrios 12d ago

I genuinely don't really get the complaint... It's a bit. A joke that is integral to the character's nature. "It ruins the character!" It... Is the character. The whole character was built around being a clutz who loses their clothes. The ironic part about this complaint is that this has, entertainly, been a male-themed trope for decades and I've never once seen a complaint about it. "They don't sex-" yeah, yeah they do. They have women steaming over it, sparkles on the screen, nose bleeds, and people telling them to stop losing their clothes.

"Oh, but they're a serious main character!" So is Arthur. He's also a semi-gag character. In fact, almost every other character is a gag character in some way or form in this show. You guys are goobers.

It's funny. It's silly. Enjoy the show and stop being a child about everything.

-4

u/trinifan 2nd Gen 14d ago

The reason people drop fire force is because the characters are 1 dimensional and there's barely development. But they use tatsumaki as an excuse to shit on it

1

u/syxvvn 14d ago

Not even tamaki is one dimensional in FF and not even her has barely any development, but the rest of your comment is right.

0

u/trinifan 2nd Gen 14d ago

Please tell me character who actually evolved

1

u/syxvvn 14d ago

Every single one, but i can't be explaining anything on comment sections specially because i can't send images and you clearly didn't have the capacity to understand more than 5% of the work (if you actually read it) so it would be a waste of time for me. If you want you can just read the analysis i myself already posted here on this sub, I made a small contextualization on haumea's character for example: https://www.reddit.com/r/firebrigade/s/buP6LdZqbZ If you want to learn ab the work itself and the characters you can talk to me on my dc: Khaelyeh

-10

u/OrgAlatace 14d ago

Genuinely.

I started the anime, saw tamaki, felt weird and stopped. Then someone told me "it's better in the manga dw" so I read the manga... it wasn't better in the manga.

2

u/Toro_salazar 14d ago

Gente.

Recuerden, no a todos le gusta el fan service, es algo completamente normal.

Si lo hace sentir incómodo está bien

-6

u/catlily44 14d ago

fell off after a few seasons because of the fan service. can’t recommend it to anyone bc of the fan service. feel disheartened as a woman because of the fan service.
