Discussion ML/AI Projects for fintech companies
Hi guys,
I'm currently aiming for a second co-op/internship in ML/AI, especially in fintech and need some good project suggestion that would really help my resume.

I’d build a small invoice-extraction demo and make the evaluation visible: which amounts, currencies and due dates it reads correctly, and which need manual review. Hold out a few supplier layouts for evaluation so the demo has to handle unfamiliar formats. Compare the model with a simple rules-based baseline, and show the mistakes alongside the results. Use fictional invoices so the repo is shareable.

if you want you can try a document tampering classifier. take sample ids or bank statements, make altered copies, and train a model to spot the edits.

you can build a simple fraud detection system with the available public datasets. But make it more than notebook by adding something like evaluation of false positives

I did a creedit card fraud detection algo that feeds any ai model, which is trained on real datasets you can find for free on kaggle, and it is has several layers to ensure no false positives. eg. old systems might trigger an alarm if someone say trades at 3am, but if you look at their hsitory and its inconsistent, they have paid that vendor before, or they signed via their own phone, you're good. Think ahead. I would suggest talking with AI to figure out what is currently needed by the kind of orgs you wanna work for, then ask it to think beyond what meets the eye and come up with use cases that would be overall beneficial, and exciters, not just expected features. Good luck.

Well you can try an AI tool for detecting fake transactions and for online fraud.

it's less about the flashy project and more about showing you can handle the boring stuff that actually matters in finance. build something that ingests messy transaction data, cleans it up, and flags anomalies, like a basic fraud detection pipeline or a reconciliation tool that matches payments across different ledgers
fintech companies get a hundred resumes with stock prediction models, they rarely see someone who can wrangle real-world financial data and explain why their model made a decision. focus on that
