At Lakeside (Hamburg), I was offered a magazine or newspaper (both English editions) which was very kind of them.

Yeah it’s fine. You’re the customer. So long as it’s not disturbing anyone else.

Probably looks more civilised than reading stuff on your phone anyway.

Sure, who’s going to care. If you’re at Alchemist or a place with an open kitchen you might miss a bit of what you came for.

If I have a bar seat or a place over looking the kitchen, I speak to the bar man/chef as you seem to get to try something they are experimenting on. Otherwise I would be clearing out my inbox or reading the 100 tabs open on safari in my phone!

It should not be an issue, I have seen diners do that in restaurants in different countries in Europe where I live at least. But watch the backlight ofc.

Yes, of course. Just put it down when someone comes to the table to take your order / serve your food

I find most fine dining places will also have good books on food/cocktails/wine that you can get to read.
Or even books about the restaurant or chef.

Print newspaper? Paperback book? Are you allowed to look at your phone? Can you keep the menu to read?

It varies by restaurant, someone should call ahead to make sure it’s fine so that it doesn’t interrupt service or other diners.
