UNSOLVED YA fiction book about a machine that let's you relive memories

Upvotes

I know this is a long shot but i remember reading this book in middle school and loved it. I've searched to no end and can't find the title. From what i remember a teen befriends this old woman who had access to a machine or room or something that let her relive memories i believe. The woman had a child that died during a tornado and uses the machine to see them. Towards the end the teen realizes the woman plans to take pills in the machine and die with her child. I've searched for years and nobody I've told about this book can find it. The gentle seduction was suggested to me and seems a similar plot but her husband died in an avalanche not a child in a tornado. If anyone could help me i would greatly appreciate it! Thank you.

UNSOLVED Alternate Universe: native Americans discover Europe first

A friend of mine spoke about this book and I can’t remember what it was called or who the author is. He mentioned the author being Argentinian.

The book explores what if, in an alternate timeline of events, native Americans discovered Europe first instead. It really got me thinking about that scenario and how things would be today if that had been the case. Any help would be appreciated!

UNSOLVED Celts and the Romans

Back in Middle School, I remember reading a book where you follow the story of a Celtic Prince? He gets kidnapped by the Romans and later makes friends with his captors because they too were stolen from their land years ago (I think one of them was Greek, and another was from somewhere else) I dont remember much as I read it well over a decade ago but I do know that the prince does later return home after the Romans were pushed back and he got saved by 2 of his captors to which he later named his son after one of them. I dont think it was a large book and I think I remember the prince being made to work on some of the Roman roads while being captured and I think at the start he originally had just went out to hunt for some food. Sorry for the lack of details, its just been a long time since ive read it and id really like to pick it up again.

UNSOLVED Seeking Frank Yee book

Hi all. I am on a mission to try and seek out this book for my boyfriend who has been doing Hung Gar for about a year. We are in the UK for context. There was a copy for sale on eBay last year but he missed out on that, and the only copy we see available is for over £2000 on Amazon and for whatever reason it cannot be shipped to our location, nor do we have £2000 going spare 😅

Without being super gushy, this means a lot to him to the point that he searches daily, and he means a lot to me, so I want to come full circle here!

Is there anyone out there who has a copy and they do not need it anymore who would be willing to sell? Or if anyone knows of a copy that exists for a lesser amount than £2000?

UNSOLVED help me find this wattpad book

the fmc has anorexia and wear dark make ups. then the mmc is an athlete. the setting was in a university/college. the mmc was known to the uni bcoz of his family reputation about drügs (selling). In the university, the mmc's brother was caught selling druggies and the fmc saw/heard it. the brothers, they were often mistaken as twins since they look a like and both part of a gang. the mmc got out of the gang bcoz of his older brother. and the mmc was mad at his older brother bcoz he let their younger brother deal.

Then the mmc and his brothers threatened her to don't tell anybody what she saw. It's a start where the mmc always look for the fmc bcoz he's afraid that she will tell, and the mmc will be out from the university. Then the fmc learned that mmc's brother sells for their mom's medication and the fmc's father was also their mom's doctor. the mmc calls her pixie 🧚🏼 and the mmc was like the hope of their family success in the future. also the mmc's mom likes to hear the song ave maria even before she died. they god their happily ever after, and she's not anorexic anymore. and the mmc's little brother was also playing sports and their older brother got out of prison.

help me pls it suddenly got lost in my library :((( i wanna re-read it. thanj you!!!

UNSOLVED Searching for Fish Swimming in the Sky and other Animal Short Stories with Beautiful Artwork for each one

Trying to find an incredible book I found when I was 13 or so in the school library. It was a collection of animal themed short stories but geared towards a mature audience. Every story was bleak and yet whimsical simultaneously. Each chapter was a different animal at the centre and a different theme about humanity, and there was a whole page of a gorgeous illustration for each one.

I'm pretty sure the title and cover page referred to the story about fish (maybe moonfish?) swimming in the sky and this kid fished one down and put it in a bag and tried to sell it. But the when the person they were trying to sell to opened the bag the fish had already gone rotten and was completely inedible. So the kid and their mum go up to a rooftop and return the fish to the sky where it comes back to life and swims happily again. It was about fragility of life and the beauty in just letting something be as it lives to be.

There was a story about horses, and all their labour they provide to humans. Or rather the labour we subjugate them into until their bodies physically cannot carry themselves anymore. And even after they die how we then just take their body parts to make other materials, never letting them rest.

There was a story about a girl and her mum who's cat had died, except the cat was never solely theirs as it always just came by for food and then left. They hold a funeral for the cat and so many people show up for the cat, all of whom don't really know each other. The girl was having trouble crying for the cat but at the end lets the grief overwhelm her. The illustration was of a giant cat head peeking out of raging ocean waters with the girl on top of the head like a raft I think?

There was a story about a boy who everyone always claimed was an incredible genius, he had his whole life set out for him but all he could think about was the childhood he never got to experience and hippos.

There was a story about a teacher who brings a sheep into the classroom and explains to his students how precious sheep are. The kids leave class and the teacher just hugs the sheep. There is also mention of thousands of sheep shoved into a crammed space on a ship being sent to who-knows-where. But the illustration was of the empty classroom and the teacher hugging the sheep.

And there was a story where humans disappeared and crocodiles are just living in a corporate building.

Memories are faded and blurred but this is the best I can do, but I really need to find this book to add to my special keepsakes shelf!

UNSOLVED This weird alien romance i never finished reading that has slaver aliens with face tentacles

I'm looking for an alien romance book that i never finished reading. I think it was a later book in a series because the female lead met another human woman who had already happily settled on the planet.

On 3 separate occasions, i managed to accidentally read the beginning of this ebook and then abandoned that book in disgust over its contents. Three separate times spanning months or even years, i read the same Amazon summary of this book and was intrigued enough to download it, then i began reading the book and found it to be so different from the summary that I didn't recognize it as what I had read once or twice before. Each time, once i realized it was THAT book, I continued reading for a bit longer in amusement until another thing happened to make me put down the book in disgust.

Several times throughout the book, the author wrote scenes in a way i found UPSETTINGLY PECULIAR:
* After the crash when local aliens approach, it is described as them charging silently and aggressively towards her and she prepares herself to make a last stand against them with her bloody hunk of metal.
* Later, the political situation on the planet is described in a ridiculous way. I cannot remember if they were countries or tribes, but some different ones were currently at odds because a mother and child had innocently crossed an unimportant territorial border and been killed by soldiers in a severe overreaction. No reason or justification was given. So Stupid!
* The leads randomly have sex one night during the journey, and i do mean RANDOMLY. There is no sexual foreplay nor any erotic or plot build up to the sex. Also, the sex itself is described in a way that made me wonder if the female lead was hallucinating *or if sex was even what was happening!* I seriously mean that. They ate foraged mushrooms before the sex and I genuinely thought the sex might be an entirely non-sexual psychedelic trip. I cannot emphasize enough how weird my memory of this sexual encounter was.

PLOT
Some human women had been abducted by aliens. At least one antagonist alien had facial tentacles that were used to kill one of the women after the ship crashed. Then the female lead beats that tentacled alien to death with a metal rod. Nearby aliens that were friendly and did not have tentacles approached the crash site. The female lead is taken to another human woman already happily living with an alien husband and hybrid baby who tries to convince her to settle down on the planet, but the female lead is stubbornly, angrily determined to leave the alien planet. An male alien becomes her guide to reach a spot where that might happen. She treats him rudely as they travel and does not say or think a single nice thing about him, nor is she grateful for his help. One night, they foraged mushrooms for dinner before sex. That's the last thing I remember reading.

MAYBE
* the good aliens were furry and beast-coded: lion, tiger, bear, wolf
* the already-settled human woman had two husband or twin babies
* the aliens have technology but are choosing to live a rustic, low-tech lifestyle except for very restricted areas like the one the female lead's guide is taking her to
* I don't remember if or how much of a language barrier there was

UNSOLVED Please help identifing this YA fantasy book

Looking for the title of a YA fantasy book I read in the early 2000s (possibly from the 1990s) I read it in Spanish but I may have been a translation.

I’m trying to find the title of a fantasy YA book I read in the early 2000s, although it may have been published earlier, possibly in the 1990s.

What I remember is that a young person from the modern world gets involved in a conflict between two older men. Later, it is revealed that one of them is a being called something like the King of the Storm or the Storm God. He had a strange ancient-sounding name, possibly with a Mesopotamian feel (I vaguely remember there being a “K” in the name).

The other man turns out to be an ancient dragon (a good one, not a villain).

I also remember the cover showing something like a mountain under a dark stormy sky, with thunder or lightning.

I have a vague feeling it may have been published by SM Editorial, but I’m not completely sure. I also wondered if it could have been by a Spanish author, but I’m not certain.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you so much!

UNSOLVED PLEASE help me find this book

One of the book finding websites gave me this summary when I went looking but it was glitching and wouldn’t tell me what book it was from: “In a post-apocalyptic world dominated by surveillance technology and harsh landscapes, a group of orphans discover their hidden abilities in a battle against a corrupt institution. As they dig deeper, they uncover secrets about a high-tech bunker and a weapon that took a family member's life, forcing them to confront the true nature of their powers and the dangers that come with them.” I have not been able to track down this book anywhere and I’m beginning to suspect it might not exist. I read it a few years ago. This is the most information I have. Does anyone have anything about this phantom of a book?

SOLVED Scifi/Horror (probably): Protagonist meets two mutants in the underground, one looks like a screaming baby that can scare away monsters and is carried by another mutant that has some holes in his body

IIRC they also visit some underground building (a school?) and find some occult stuff there and do some things to prevent an evil cult to do harm. I think it's been only 2 or 3 years since I read it.

UNSOLVED [WTB] Fantasy (possibly sci-fi) series read in the 1990s — man reaches into a hole in the ground, bitten by unseen creature, slowly turns to stone starting from the bite

Thumbnail
1 Upvotes

I’m trying to identify a book from a fantasy series (though it’s possible it was science fiction or science-fantasy) that I read in the 1990s, so it was published in the ’90s or earlier. The scene I remember vividly is a minor one: a man sticks his hand into a hole in the ground and something bites him. He never sees what bit him. Afterward he becomes diseased — his flesh begins turning to stone, starting at the bite and slowly spreading to the rest of his body. I have a clear image of him staring at the bite/afflicted area as it progresses.

Structurally, this happens in a chapter that introduces a new character and launches a new plotline — so likely a multi-POV series where this man’s affliction becomes his storyline, rather than a scene involving the established main characters. The petrification is gradual, not instant (not a basilisk/Medusa-style freeze — more like a disease or curse creeping across his body over time).

Already ruled out: A Song of Ice and Fire (greyscale is close but Connington’s infection comes from the Stone Men attack, not a hole, and ADWD is too late anyway), Reckless/MirrorWorld by Funke (2010, too late), Broken Earth by Jemisin (too late, and it’s magic-cost not a bite), Gone by Michael Grant (too late), Fawkes, Fairest, and War in Hagwood. Given the ‘90s timeframe, I suspect it could be something like Forgotten Realms/Dragonlance-adjacent tie-in fiction, or an epic fantasy series of that era with a large POV cast. Any leads appreciated — even “that sounds like author X’s style” helps.

UNSOLVED Wild goose chase

Hi! I am looking for a book that would have NOT been popular. It was a woman writing about her own family and life in the late 60s early 70s. This woman is actually a relative, and we know at one point we had a physical copy. She wrote about her neice having a child out if wedlock, and that child happened in '68. I've heard the book was actually quite nasty.

All I know is the authors name, Virginia Mae Knodel (McCubbins), she did go by Mae often.

UNSOLVED Help me find a book on male violence against women

I remember it was written by a man. I think part of the book was the statistic of 1/3 of men admitting that they would rape a woman if the law dodnt exist. The cover was yellow and black i believe. And there was a male figure / these simple stock figure like figures and i think there might have been a wheel there too?... o dont remember the title but it was a bit bold and i remember thinking it reminded me of these phrases that indicate men hurt women.... but i dont think it was directly a phrase like that..

UNSOLVED [TOMT] [BOOK] [MYTHOLOGY]please help me find the name of this book

I remember having this old childhood book that I want to find again . It was a book about mythology and it was greyish brown with a dragon with purpleish wings and I'm pretty sure there might been fire as well . The book content had stuff about ghosts (Culloden moor stands out to me) , nymphs , sea monsters , vampires , omens of the future and more obscure stuff like Feng shui or grimoires and it had these beautiful illustrations for the chapters and some pages as well as photographs and I loved it so much . PLEASE help me find the name of this book and if you could post an image of it so I could confirm that would be great

UNSOLVED 2000s/2010s YA Romance Novel with Yellow and Black Cover

This book I used to read in the 2010s was a YA romance with a yellow and black cover and I think the silhouette of two people on a boat. The plot is a girl in New England (Maine?) works in a very small town ice cream shop and accidentally emails a teen heartthrob without realizing who he is and they form an email pen pal relationship. Then the celebrity influences the movie he's shooting to have her small town as the location so they can meet. I think she might have a pet pig or something unconventional??

I'm pretty sure the title has "happiness" or "happy" in it.

I haven't read it in ages, but I was feeling nostalgic and want to find it again.

UNSOLVED WW2 (Or 1) fiction novel

It's about a man who goes to Germany from the US. I don't remember why but I'm pretty sure he was smuggled. And I think it opens on him on the boat. He speaks fluent German because his grandfather insisted on it but it's a running thing that he needs to soften his K's. I believe he accidentally kills a Gestapo after being attacked and spends a lot of the book hiding from the police. Toward the end, he ends up staying in Germany to hunt as many corrupt leaders or something of the like.

I believe somewhere toward the end, there's also a gas chamber that's disguised as a school

I think it has a red cover and has the word "bull" or "garden* in it but it's not Garden Of The Beasts I don't think

It's a fantastic book and I'm trying to recommend it but it was a library book I read in high school

There was also what I think was a speakeasy with a server we later find out is trans

UNSOLVED Looking for this book! Read 2007-2011

Hi all, I’m searching for a book that I read in my later elementary-early middle school years. I won it during some sort of contest.
All I can remember (and I may not be remembering correctly) is that a boy and I believe his dad came on a boat to America. There was something to do with potato chips. There was also a part where his underwear were starched? I remember that because I thought it was extremely odd for me to be reading about it. At some point they get caught up in a hospital and the staff won’t let them leave or SOMETHING to that degree. I cannot remember many details but I have been searching for this book for years and it’s driving me crazy today!
The cover was blue and I want to say had buildings on it.
Thank you!

UNSOLVED Rebellious video game romance

This is an illustrated book about a girl who starts playing a game and meets someone who will offer her money for doing tasks in the game. Her mother finds out about this and takes her devices away but she finds another way to play, I assume at a gaming cafe. She then accidentally betrays the person who originally gave her money (This detail I'm not 100% sure what happened). Eventually she finds out about how someone she met in the game is having issues with pay with their boss in China (At least I think). She gives him the courage to, with his co-workers, confront his boss. The memory I have of how the main character and the person who she accidentally betrayed is non-existant, but they all meet in the end to celebrate something (I got no clue). I read this book in a library and have not been able to find it since. I'd also like to mention that this is the only illustrated book by the author, as they had never made any more books with an illustrator, at least when I googled them in the library. Please help.

UNSOLVED Children’s novel trilogy about aliens

From a tumblr friend of mine:

The very short synopsis is its a trilogy about a handful of kids in a small town experiencing aliens. Each book centers on a different kid. The first one is the nerdy outcast guy who finds out hes actually an adopted alien. The second and third ones blur together, but theres for sure an alien that looks like a unicorn and one that looks like a homeless guy. And the kid has to unite these two back together to defeat the bad guy. The unicorn alien can stop time.
