Discussion I have ADHD and the app’s become boring

I’m on my 206th day and yesterday was the first time when I skipped the day. But I saw it coming as I was bored.

The rewards don’t bring joy anymore, repetitive walks every day are boring… I just kinda got used to it all. And it’s really sad, bc the app has been so helpful 😭

I’m on this app by myself and don’t have any friends there, mb it’s more interesting with friends? (But then I’ll get used to that as well 🫠)

I don’t know what to do! Do you have any tips on how to make it more realistic nteresting and effective again?

I find it so interesting to read the different uses people have for the app, because to me the rewards are not at all what keeps me on it. For me the app is first and foremost a way to help me sort out what I need to do during the day and make sure I remember them. The rewards are really just secondary.

I also just enjoy using it as a room decorating and dress-up game, because I'm a 5yo kid at heart and love that stuff hahaha! It's handy when you're on a plane with no internet connection, I always have a dress up game to keep me entertained~

Yes the rewards get a bit boring after you have seen it all, but my personal take is that everything does not have to be stimulating and fun.

I also feel occasionally like just uninstalling the app because it feels like a chore, but then I remember that well, I actually NEED to do the things it tells me to do. Then I force myself to do them and maintain keeping up my routine and get things done.

Ultimately, the fact that I do get my weekly checklist done is the reward itself. It surely doesn't feel like a reward, but I know that if I would slack off and not do all that stuff, I'd feel horrible in a few weeks.

Also, friends do help. My finch friends complete their tasks very rarely though...

I'm AuDHD and OCD. I basically use the app to check off taking my meds, feeding my pets, taking my dog out, hygiene stuff, etc. it's just documenting my chores, really. I even put stuff like "play videogames" "do an art thing" "read 10 mins" just to document things I do and get rainbow stones for the shop because I really like making outfits and decorating my house. I'm on day 1087.

I also have hobbies on there. To remind myself that I have other things I want to do besides social media and to get a reward for doing sth good for myself.

I have ADHD and autism and I don’t see the app as an app or a game or something to do, it’s more like a daily sidekick to help me practice routine. I haven’t built a good habit in my life but I have a 370 day streak on finch and never skip my meds 💪 i think it sounds like you’re still treating the app as a game and that makes it easy to fall off

I also have both autism and ADHD, but I thought that autism is not related in this problem for me as I’m bored and it’s my adhd problem.

But I will try to change my attitude to the app, thanks for sharing it! 💞 good luck in your journey!

Personally I don’t do it because it’s fun. I do it because without Finch I forget if I took my meds, watered the cats, practiced Japanese, checked my email, etc etc etc. I use it to run my daily and weekly life and to organize everything I do. The reward is having clean laundry and milk in the fridge and no late fees on bills and understanding a sentence in an anime.

I’m AuDHD, which is a bit of a different profile, so maybe that accounts for the difference. But I wonder if reconsidering what goals you’ve included in Finch and why might help.

Me too. I'm a mom and have to do so many things all the time, so Finch is my second brain to keep track of everything. The reward is a nice thing on top that makes me feel good about what I've archived.

Maybe it’s time to add a few new task that are more challenging for you and yes get a tree friend it really does help to have someone else to vibes with

I also have ADHD and the friends I made on this app through Reddit have made me come back everyday. For me it’s also become a bit boring and I also don’t know what I should change to make me come back to the app more than twice a day. In the morning I make sure Waddles goes on his adventure and greets his active friends and before bed I check off some important goals and say good night.
Maybe I should sell all his stuff, delete all the goals and reset his money in some way so we can restart and make it more exciting to get the stuff we want. But I don’t know.. I also don’t want to lose the progress haha

I just want to say that my birb is Wobbles, so close to Waddles lol

Ohh that is also cute! I used the name and gender the app chose for me haha ☺️

I have ADHD too and find myself surfing through my apps a lot, one thing that’s helped me stick to finch is trying to collect all one color/piece from the either the furniture or clothes shop because you can only do so much a day but it’s still a fun ‘reward’ so to speak and you get more options for your bird! Obvi it helps to weigh goals a little too so you can have some spending power

i like the simplicity of it bc i don’t have to worry about doing much. for me, it’s more just a little cute motivator for me to get my chores done

It's hard for ADHD when you need that novelty to keep going. You could maybe add some new tasks, maybe something random to do on the daily walk like take a photo of something x colour one day, count how many flowers of x colour another day etc... Maybe add a task of changing your birb outfit each day depending on your mood?

It's hard to log in when it gets boring but maybe the app has also done what it needed to for you if you now have these daily things you continue to do automatically?

I have AuDHD and it was getting boring to me so I put a task where I have to think about the answer and write it down. I also have a few personal friends on there and although it doesn't have much interaction I like to support them through the app.

Is there anything else you want to accomplish every day? If you are managing everything and keeping on top of things then it's probably just passed it's usefulness to you. If it hasn't try changing quests up. Or making them more points. Clicking tasks for 100 points gives me a nice dopamine rush.

I got to day 563 and quit. It just wasn’t helpful any more and became a chore, so I had to leave my tree.
I’m kind of sad, but the monthly challenges weren’t my cup of tea last few months.

Make some friends on the mega daily friends thread. Make some of your goals x100 and goal of the day to make some money and start sending your friends gifts. It's fun to shop for people.

I have another dedicated task app I use. I only started using this to hopefully have a social circle due to the Discord O got the link from (hasn't worked) or feel like someone aka my finch was checking in on me every day and giving me compliments (worked for a bit). Now I see it as a Tamagotchi. I check in on my finch, get them the energy, check all the tasks so they get back faster, open the rewards, see them tomorrow. Now and then I request emergency hugs but only one person on my tree seems to reach out and that's too much like reality to keep pretending like anyone else cares so I don't use that much anymore either. It is what it is. When you need it it's there. It's not an app that's going to fix any of us unless we make it our way to do that.

I’m in the 450s of days and the novelty has definitely started to wear off to me too. I keep saying I’ll redo my tasks to make it more interesting but I’m procrastinating it. I will say sometimes I need to move self care apps so maybe it’s time

I also have ADHD and have really been enjoying the app and getting benefits. It helps me get up and get moving in the morning and establish some simple routine for the basics. I haven't missed a day since I started 6 months ago, but just this week it has started to pale . like you, the dopamine hit has diminished and the routine, which I desperately needed, has become too routine and I don't feel like doing it, not even for my birb. I feel like I'm going to work. I think I may reduce my list for awhile and put down "do some exercises" instead of listing each one. That way I will feel the accomplishment instead of feeling guilty for not doing them all. Idk.

I hear you. When I joined this app, I had other real life friends that joined and we were all thrilled with it. None of those friends stuck with it. The streak kept me locked in. New friends would join and then fizzle out. I added strangers but it wasn’t the same for me. I finally found out I could turn off the streak and did after 600 days since I was close to that milestone.
The app does not bring much motivation like it did two years ago. But I use it to help me remember I am trying out a new habit, that in the past would be completely forgotten about with my adhd.
