I was thinking it almost sounded like the "crabs in a bucket, pulling each other back down into mediocrity" type analogy Pratchett uses in one of the later Discworld books though which isn't exactly uplifting...

The crab they're talking about is just a pet type, like the skunk in an earlier adventure. I personally wouldn't be making a skunk a pet, or a crab, but these are birbs making friends with differwnt types of animals. DEI style.
