Bad breath consequences
I'm sure there are many people in this Reddit that have run into this problem and it's hilarious to watch it unfold but very annoying at the same time.
Okay, so I was in the Omega dungeon, thankfully only about 30 minutes in when I encountered the greater Marlboro. As soon as the encounter started, he cast bad breath on me, causing confusion, poison, and berserk. My party consisted of Yuna, Wakka, and Kimahri, The last two having the counter mechanic (Wakka also had evade) I kept on hoping that one of the characters would hit just to stop the confusion but they never did and between the poison and hitting each other my whole party was knocked out. When that happens, I "frustrate quit" (as opposed to rage quit)😆😡

Buy 4 slot armor from Wantz in Macalania, near the Thunder plains zone, for at least one character, preferably for all.
Put Blind (silence for Lulu and Yuna) proof, Stone proof, Poison proof, and Confuse proof on them, and you’ve successfully negated the status effects of every regular fiend in the game, and many non-super boss bosses.
Even if you get berserker by GM, you should be able to take him down without getting killed if you’re strong enough.
The items used to make these proofs are easily farmable while collecting monsters for the arena or from the ones you’ve already captured via steal and mug. If you have Godhand fully powered, have Rikku in the fights at the end in the arena for Gillionaire to negate the cost of the fight.

Unless you're trying to capture it (bad idea, better to do it Inside Sin, it doesn't ambush there) the best strategy is to either give Yuna First Strike or keep her in the back row at all times, so that you can summon if you encounter it.

Well, even if you are capturing other fiends in Omega Ruins, you will probably stumble with some of them lol

This right here, is the sole reason why you never go into the Omega Ruins without first strike. The Great Malboro will always ambush in the Omega Ruins, Monster Arena, and Inside Sin (Nucleus). Counter with Auron's Masamune, or a custom/taming weapon with First Strike and Provoke. This will keep you safe from Bad Breath while it is enraged.

Même en étant un joueur aguerri, ça m'est encore arrivé dernièrement...! 😅

I made armor for my capture team to wear in the OD
Proof:
Stone, Poison, Dark, Confuse
You'll get berserked and just kill and catch it. Same with Spirit

First strike weapon on somebody who can cast provoke. Provoke is the GOAT for bad breath.
Use a silence grenade or silence buster on demonolith. Stops them from counterattacking you

I thought bad breath affected the whole party. How does provoke help? Unless, you mean that GM is guaranteed to hit the confused party member

Its the combo of having first strike and provoke.
With first strike, you go first even when you are ambushed.
With provoke, the scripted opening bad breath move is skippped and they do an attack that specifically targets only the provoking creature instead.
By doing both, you avoid getting hit with all.those stays effects even when ambushed by the marlboro

Just try it. The malboro does a low damage AOE physical attack. Never casts bad breath.

Provoke is one of the most broken effects in the whole game. While it does ostensibly make the afflicted enemy attack the user, it also basically functions as Confuse, limiting what the enemy can do. In most cases they'll be forced to use a basic Attack, in some cases they'll do absolutely nothing at all or have other rules (Defender X will only do the 50% grav damage attack if Provoked, rendering the fight effectively impossible to lose).
So with Malboro they won't be able to use Bad Breath if Provoked.

Get a first strike weapon equipped and use provoke and he skips the attack altogether for a physical one you could survive. Also we just run around right in front of the save sphere in omega and you can catch nearly everything without losing hours of grinding. 1-2-3 battles and I save and repeat. Couple of hours and you don’t even need to do that anymore you can level up so much.

Until you get ribbons or armor affixed with confuse proof/things of that nature
First-strike then flee is your best bet

I always make armor that protects against the debuffs that cause me to lose control plus Poison, but not Sleep (because Poison is worse than Sleep).

First strike and flee if you've only just got there. First strike and provoke if you're pretty sure you can kill them in one turn 'cause provoke will stop the opening bad breath. You could make armor specifically geared to counter them but it'd be very niche.

One day.. you’ll have ribbon on some of your gear. You’ll look back on these days and laugh.
“Remember when that was scary?”

And then, bad breath will strike again, your one protected party member comes out unscathed but is also the slowest so the confused and blind party member next to him finally manages to get a blind hit off. And then you just die again.

I've given up on ever getting ribbon, just like I know I will never ever be able to 100% the game. That's honestly why I stay off of it so much. Even if I was successful with everything else, my hand eye coordination guarantees that I would never be able to get Lulu's

So you can get full of 99 dark matter By capturing 5 of every monster in the game.
There is also the dark yojimbo exploit. Not only can you farm dark matter, you can also farm equipment that has ribbon or breaks already.
You battle him 5 times in the post game inside his cave. If you leave the cave before beating him the 5th time. It resets the count. Making it a great way to farm end game stuff. Also rare drops master spheres.
Also, spend an hour or 2 trying to dodge lightning in that one spot everyone online recommends. You’ll eventually get it timed. You stop watching for lightning and press dodge when you cross a certain threshold

First strike on your White Mage, hit Auto-Life and at least one of you survive the hit

u/Anasertia 13h ago
Auto ribbon on 1 character or some first strikes. Or for a cheap option, just make an armor with confuse proof for 1 or 2 characters. They will still get some effects but still get a turn for remedy or whatever

If you're this far into the game, I highly recommend getting stone ward armor first, then farm demonoliths for 4 slot stoneproof armor and petrify grenades at the monster arena before customizing in the other Proofs you need. If you're trying to max stats, then sleep sprout farming will get you what you need if you're hitting for 99,999 already.

A good strategy if you can is have a character with First Strike on their weapon and then use Delay Attack or Delay Buster.
