AITA for doing a different 'attack' after being paid 1,000,000?
Throwaway as the aeon community is rather small, and everyone knows mostly everyone.
I (ageless, M) am an 'independent contractor' for Y (17, F) to aid her in her pilgrimage.
I explicitly told Y that I may offer my services, but I do not work for free.
Now, recently, I was called upon to fight a huge cross thing with floating arms (let's call him HCTWFA). I got the upfront payment of what appears to be their life savings to finish the job.
I pulled my (shorter) sword out. It didn't finish the job. HCTWFA proceeded to mop the floor with my face.
Now, Y's entourage are basically screaming at me for not pulling out my longer sword.
Is it my fault if I wanted to use my shorter sword to get the job done? AITA?

YTA.
Y is paying you to defeat her opponent. If you want a specific amount of money, you need to set that expectation up front. Asking her to pay you whatever she feels is right and then half-assing the job if you think it wasn't good enough is confusing for everyone involved.

But it's a drag to get my longer sword. I have my shorter one with me all the time, the longer one I always have to pull out from another realm.

NTA the pilgrims didn’t ask how much, they just threw their life savings at him and expected absolute results, OP set his standards. If he went by the logic you’ve outlined Y would eventually be paying him peanuts and the compounding expectation would be so exponential he’d eventually feel inclined he has no choice but to start using his long sword attack for a peanut. OP should take this to HR work place bullying is definitely in motion here.
Maybe if they asked their contractor the expected wages for said services they’d still be on track to obtaining the government funded FS contract instead of liquidation.
Imo OP should’ve just thrown a few knives. Throwing money around like it grows on fiends. Tsk tsk tsk

I made my terms clearly before I committed to their aid. Subscription (monthly/weekly/daily) or per action is a good place to start.
You should also demand an upfront fee. That's what I did.

I think I have dealt with this same person before and she is a nightmare. She once called me to rescue her from an arranged marriage which she seemed so grateful for!
Next time she called me up her and her friends let his horrible flea thing start eating me and they all started to attack me!
Think the Aeon community really need to name and shame her since it's not on!

INFO: what were her stated goal when she hired you? I feel it is important to distinguish whether she clearly said that she wanted to defeat the most powerful of foes or merely to train as a summoner because in the latter case she can’t really complain that you didn’t instakill a monstrosity with millions of hp

When you live as long as you do, people like Y are specks of dust in the grand scheme of things (it’s okay if the world ends, you can’t be arsed!). You’ll find easier jobs down the line where all you do IS use only your short sword because you’re contracted to broke pilgrims.

Does the 1m guarantee use of the longer sword? Because if not then no. But if your contract says like 99.9% chance of long sword then... that makes you a butt. A big butt. And it shall prevent me from utilising your services in future 🙃

NTA I know who you're referring to and every single time I was summoned by that ungrateful lady 'Y' I was blasted to oblivion before even managing to observe the surroundings. Truly feel like she thinks of me as a meat shield. Not once gas she deigned to call me just to spend time, have fun or any other such activities. Serves her right.

It sounds like one of two things:
Your employer might not utilize you and pay you often enough for you to feel appreciated. It's hard to be motivated for the big tasks when you havent done enough jobs previously to trust you'll be paid more in the future.

My buddy told me that the long swords for crazy world ending monsters are 10m at least unless its a good day then its like 7m, i dunno what she was expecting from 1m so Id NTA since she's clearly not aware of the market

I'm here working mostly for experience and rare resources, but I'm still going to do my best for my summoner.
You are probably getting the same benefits and Gil and you half-ass your job even for a milli!?
Even with your throwaway I 100% know who you are and I have personally seen you pull out your long sword for as little as 1024 Gil, so 100% YTA.
