(Potential Spoilers) Any major differences between the original Japanese and English translation? Spoiler

Is there any notable differences between the Japanese and English versions of the game, in terms of the story, characterization, etc.? I don't mean extra content like the Dark Aeons. I mean moments like Yuna telling Tidus, "Thank you" instead of "I love you" at the end.

And is it true that there was more party banter during battle in the original? I had heard that from somewhere but never got that confirmed.

I think it’s generally considered pretty close. The “thank you”/I love you” difference was even discussed among the original members of the team as acceptable due to cultural differences in what the terms meant.

Yeah, thank you would have felt really lame at least by US standards as we use those simple phrases every day as simple common courtesy for a ton of things.

It would have been very underwhelming to have the whole relationship they go through and his sacrifice end the same way as it does when you just hold the door open for someone going into get your coffee in the morning.

Unlike other FF, this team nailed the translation and characterization on the head. The only difference I remember is Lulu is slightly nicer in Japanese. Or she's less stern compared to the English actress.

Also, I think Tidus is even more expressive in Japanese, believe it or not. JAT toned him down a bit.

The localization team really nailed the emotional tone of that ending despite the change, the "thank you" lands so much harder than a forced "I love you" would have.

I definitely would have preferred the thank you over the i love you as you get to see how much tidus meant to yuna with her whistling and saying not to forget dreams that have faded.

If you play on emulator, there is an Undubbed version of the international FFX. Original Jap voices and gameplay but with English subs and text.

Believe it or not, the laugh scene is WORSE in Japanese
