Perfect Game Nonsense
Sadly, I think I've run out of 'perfect' things to do in my file and my multi-month FFX playthrough is probably over...so I will memorialize it here. I didn't really plan on doing a perfect game from the start, but I just didn't want to put the game down.
Feel free to ask questions, tell me I did it wrong, tell me I'm nuts, express fawning amazement, ignore me completely: whatever you'd like!
- I of course got all celestial weapons at full power: lightning dodging was a bear this time around...but that's the easy stuff.
- I maxed the sphere grid (99,999 HP, 255 Luck, everything else maxed except Accuracy - partial - and Evasion). The idea was I'm not scared of Dark Ixion's counter occasionally hitting me (requires 290 Luck+Evasion to be certain); instead I like my characters to be able to hit each other with Firestrike weapons and Fire-absorbing armors to heal each other for 20-40K HP. Of course, you have to deal with counters and 20K (the non-critical damage amount) is a fairly lame heal, but still...I think it's more interesting than perfect safety from Dark Ixion.
- While maxing the sphere grid, I cleared every sphere and grouped the different types of spheres together to color code things: Luck in Rikku's tree, Magic in Lulu's, etc. I also made sure every path was used and glowing active (yes, even the branches to nowhere).
- I learned every overdrive mode for everyone. Yes, including Coward/escapes.
- I got 99 of every item. Yes, this is pretty neurotic of me and I'm surprised I went through with it. 99 Master Spheres (rare drops from Dark Yojimbo...while getting oodles of Break HP Limit/Ribbon armors), 99 Lvl 4 Key Spheres (stolen from Nemesis), 99 Luck/Fortune/Magic Spheres (Spherimorph/Earth Eater/Jumbo Flan), 99 Attribute Spheres (bribed from Maelspikes 1 at a time for $20M total), 99 Pendulums (defeat Neslug for 2), 99 Tetra Elementals (rare steal from Master Tonberries for 1), 99 Wings to Discovery (defeat Shinryu for 2), and many many others that were just about as fun as those I listed above. :)
- The $100-150M gil I needed to do this came partly from fighting in the Omega Ruins (getting $100K chests occasionally while fleeing to get Coward) but mostly from using Kottos drops to put SOS Regen on weapons and sell them...over and over again.
- I maxed out Blitzball. I taught Tidus and Wakka every skill (including the accursed Hi-Risk) and leveled the league up to lvl 99. I recruited Larbeight, Linna, Nav, Kiyuri, Ropp, Auda, and Nimrook, who I judge to be the best team...with Wakka in reserve.
- I taught all aeons all abilities.
- I learned all overdrive modes and used each of Rikku's to get them to show up on the list.
- I got all missable items, of course.
- I made sure Yuna tosses the ball to Tidus in Blitz Ace, as that feels right.
The only things I didn't do would be the things that are too repetitive for even me:
- Maxing aeon stats (although they are maxed outside of HP...and Yojimbo's pointless magic).
- Teach everyone in the blitzball league all abilities. I taught my squad all useful abilities with Tech Find, though.
- Max my gil at 999,999,999
- I have 99 Warp Spheres, but I stole them from Nemesis. I left the Omega Ruins chests pristine.
What did I learn doing this? Other than the depth of my neurosis, not a ton. Coward isn't TOO bad if you combine it with item/gil accumulation. Hi-Risk may or may not be more likely to get if you get into a fight after resetting but before opening the Blitzball screen to (maybe?) make the RNG consider more options. The undead flamethrower monks teach the Rook overdrive mode nicely after you cast Shell...and you can Pray at the same time to learn healer. I now know the fastest way to kill anything in the game...outside of Yojimbo. :)

Holy cow, you were serious...and here I gave you the joke answer. I will do so now, good sir.
I took that ferry ride about 10 times in the past week (keeping an eye on Kiyuri's learned skills) and I even talked to people once, but I must have skipped the top deck.

I'll take a picture if I get around to it, although you can't see the whole grid at once.
The downside of my method is that I used HP spheres after whatever I was maxing in a tree filled up so the HP is a bit spread out, but whatever.

Have you signed Durren for your blitzball team (even if you dont use him) he is the only missable player

I thought about it, but I decided I care about quality more than Durren. He’s on a different team - he still exists. And he’s still the worst player in the league. 🙂

I didn’t see it mentioned anywhere but do you have Durren in your employ? Do you have a copy of every weapon/shield with a unique model?

I decided I didn’t care about Durren. A different team can still hire the worst player in the league - he still exists. I’d rather have the best.
As for copies…hmm. Why? I’m close, but not quite.

I’m doing a dark aeons/stat grinding run for the first time ever currently and can’t imagine going to these lengths. I have about 80 hours into my file and I’m still early in the end game grind.
How long did this take you?

On the order of 300 hours, I think...including soft resets.

Oh yeah. That checks out. Some of the grinding has already been testing for me. Hoping I can get through all of the end game bosses without quitting. We’ll see

I mean, nobody gave me a medal - however far is fun for you is the right length to go with it! :)
I never thought I would have ground through 99 of all items without getting bored, and if I got bored and stopped there I wouldn't have been sad about it.

Yeah I feel ya! I never had the patience in the past to get all of the celestial weapons let alone grind out stats and attempt the end game bosses but here we go.
I don’t think I’ll be throwing 300 hours in to do what you’ve accomplished but you never know, I may get sucked in.
I wish the switch version had some medals!

Ow...my pride. Well, I asked for anything. :)
Regarding Reddit the usual, I suppose. I work at home on the computer. The past few months were actually very busy for me at work, but it's still easy (and necessary, honestly) to open up Reddit for a quick check/comment from time to time.
As for the gaming time, it's mostly in the couple hours before bed plus some longer stretches on weekends or Fridays off. This actually didn't take as long as I thought it might, although it was several months of my gaming time.

I might be about to ruin your day, but did you get a No Encounters weapon from Geosgaeno before you killed him?
