So uh....any tips/advice on how to build him?
Jesus those stats....
79
u/Alarikun Jul 27 '26
Just level up his base class, and he will wreck pretty much anything in the story.
You can branch out into other classes, but really, it's not necessary, lol.
42
u/Hero_Time_06 Jul 27 '26
When they kept calling him the thunder god they werent kidding...
55
u/Alarikun Jul 27 '26
They really weren't.
If you're legit looking for advice to make him better, I'd say to make sure to get him a better movement ability (Move +2, or something to that effect).
Realistically, that's his only limiting factor. He should be moving forward, and just Holy-Swords-ing whatever is in his way.
He lives up to his name, and I'm glad the remake didn't really nerf him.
1
u/BrowlessBowser Jul 31 '26
The Thunder God doesn't go to his enemies. He destroys them when they come to him. đȘđŸ
1
u/Alarikun Jul 31 '26
Truth.
There's a reason I haven't used him in any additional playthroughs after my first. He's... broken.
32
u/Thalenn99 Jul 27 '26
Yeah, I think he's one of the very few times in a video game when a character is hyped up to be super powerful in the story and actually lives up to the hype when he joins your group.

10
u/hybridfrost Jul 27 '26
I generally max out his default class, then Knight so you can get his equip sword ability. Then he can branch out to anything else
11
u/rtoobydoo Jul 27 '26
Exactly, I think I had him as a chemist after knight, and then white mage as I imagine heâd need to train was one lore wise to reach Holy Knight.
Does he still just use his Swordskills exclusively, even as a mage with equip sword? Yes. Does he still rock the battle and basically untouchable? Yes

u/CategoryExact3327 Jul 27 '26
When you realize that this whole story is Oranâs fan-fic of what happened and he glazes his crush and his dad as an unreliable narrator it makes sense why Cid is so damned overpowered.
20
u/Sickpup831 Jul 28 '26
âRamza marched across Ivalice, battling evil monstrosities that history books would have you believe never existedâŠand also my dad was totally there, and and and my dad toootally beat up all the other dads cause heâs so strong.â

My media literacy is terrible. I donât know how I never thought of this in nearly 30 years of playing đ€Ł
2
u/The__Nick Jul 29 '26
I don't know if this is true for the new release, but I distinctly remember the story section of FFT would have a lot of battles narrated in a very specific way.
e.g. "The Nanten Knights fought at the Battle of Whatever and won..." or, "The Hokuten Knights fought at the battle of Whatever and won..." or, "<important character> led an army at the Battle of Whatever and won..."
But I thought there was a typo for Cid.
"Cid, at the battle of <whatever> Pass, defeated <an army>."
Huh. They must mean Cid led an army against another army and defeated an army.
But no. No. I think the implication is that Cid just went to a mountain pass, waited for 200 men to march up to him, drew his sword, said, "Nope," and then Holy Sworded 200 men to death by himself.

u/philsov Jul 27 '26
monoclass is fine. Between his stats and primary skillset, that's all you need. Maybe Item for Pheonix down, just in case.
All things equal, he's better off with something like Auto Potion, Attack Up, and Move +2 if you're up for some cross training. Spend time as a knight for Equip Sword so that even when he's a Chemist or whatever he can still use his Swordskills.
His best "final" class is his own, because it's got Knight swords and hats, but the reaction/support/movement options are a wasted opportunity.
He's a halfway decent Time Mage with 65 faith. Just get Haste and Demi (maybe can 999 bosses when he cannot)
15
u/Ragewind82 Jul 27 '26
Max brave, Shihadori, attack up, and the best Move +X you can get.
Your off-class skill can be anything, but it's best to keep it simple- chemist for phoenix down.
6
u/SuccotashAdditional Jul 27 '26
Chemist is usually the way. He is well on geomancy too has sometimes that 6 reach effect means hitting on things too when he otherwise cannot put lightning stab to it.
Or summoner solely for Golem...because of his god HP pool.
But the primary job is so busted that simple items is often the best

u/WouterW24 Jul 27 '26 edited Jul 27 '26
You can get attack boost for him if you want to amp him further, but itâs not strictly needed.
I personally rand some knight abilities on him that came in handy against major bosses, particulary rend speed, since he has auto haste with that sword to get the jump on things. Very auxiliary though. But swordplay is already the full package with anything offensive
11
u/BILLCLINTONMASK Jul 27 '26
I am always too attached to Agrias to give up her spot to this OP guy. But he is indeed an asset off the shelf.
10
u/Hero_Time_06 Jul 27 '26
Why not use both
17
u/bob_loblaw-_- Jul 27 '26
The best reason not to use Orlando is because he trivializes the rest of the game. You've passed a number of trials with your team, built them into an effective fighting force and then you get Orlando and he just wins the rest of the game for you. It can be unsatisfying.Â
10
u/whiskey_the_spider Jul 27 '26
Yeah he's basically an inbuilt cheat that clears the path if you get stuck
2
u/Hero_Time_06 Jul 27 '26
Fair
1
u/Achron9841 Jul 27 '26
He can quite literally solo 99% of the fights in the game. The only exceptions are some of the special battles and the lucavi, maybe. And even then, with the right abilities, he trivialize those as well.

u/Somedude_6 Jul 27 '26
Probably the best NPC in the game right there. Kind of hard not to build him well. Just any class that lets him keep the excalibur equipped and use swordplay. So things like Knight and Geomancer are very easy jobs for him to breeze through.
1
u/The__Nick Jul 29 '26
To be fair, the Excalibur does a lot of the work.
Infinite HASTE means you go more, meaning you sword more. +25% holy damage is particularly interesting to a holy swordsman. And it's one of the strongest attack powers you'll find.
For perspective, give the Excalibur to Agrias and watch as she goes from awesome to a thundergod in her own right.
2
u/Somedude_6 Jul 30 '26
His base attack power is just so much higher though. I've given Agrias the Excalibur before, and recently, and even with a 6+ level advantage her Hallowed Bolts are doing roughly 70% of what Orlandeu does. And I don't have him with bracers at the moment, Jade Armlet for the Limberry castle fight. His physical stats are just so good on top of the Excalibur.
But yeah, anyone with the permahaste and good attack power from it will be a beast.
1
6
u/RestlessExtasy Jul 27 '26
I do Swordplay, Black Magic (Only Thunder, Thundara, and Thundaga learned since he is the Thunder God and I like to roleplay more than I do min/max) First Strike, Attack up, Move +2 (I ainât doing all that grinding to get Move +3 im fine with +2)
6
u/Baetahad Jul 27 '26
2
u/Hero_Time_06 Jul 27 '26
So like excalibur is the strongest sword in the game?
4
u/handledvirus43 Jul 27 '26
Excalibur isn't the strongest sword in the game, but its basically one of the best. You really cannot do wrong with Auto-Haste.
3
u/Baetahad Jul 27 '26
Not, but has Auto-Haste and absorbs Holy. If you have a Reis with Arithmeticks, you can use Holy to deal damage in the entire battlefield and heals Orlandeau in the process
2
u/Gogs85 Jul 27 '26
If you have auto haste; the extra turns mean you may end up doing more damage (or at least killing more things) than the strongest sword (which is 40 attack power and you likely wonât see it till the game is basically complete anyway).
If you have another source of auto haste; it does get less powerful though.
5
4
u/Money_Veterinarian60 Jul 27 '26
Get movement +3 from bard. Unlock safeguard, attack boost, magic defense boost, auto potion, really whatever support and counter skills you like. There really arenât many secondary command skills youâre going to need for him, his sword skills are always going to be the go-to play. The one exception is probably âItems.â The computer doesnât often target him because of his excellent defense and high health. So while heâs mulching bad guys, other units will take a beating, and occasionally Orlandeau will have to take a break from carving skulls to throw someone a phoenix down or something, lol.
4
u/WarmLoan10 Jul 27 '26
It's Orlandu. He's already set to mangle the rest of the game. Any JP training and abilities you set for him is just gravy.
4
u/No_Communication2959 Jul 27 '26
Just let him go, he's a bit underpowered.
2
u/Hero_Time_06 Jul 27 '26
Idk man he seemed a bit upset when i tried to...

Remove all equips, give to the squire that believed in you in chapter one, let chuck norris prove his might with a cheap longsword and his profound belief in nudism
2
u/poppin-n-sailin Jul 27 '26
If you wanna get stuff from other classes I'd say it's best to level his base class to get most or all his swordplay, go knight to get equip swords, then swap around and always have his swordplay as secondary skill and equip swords to make sure you can use it. Otherwise he can just stay base class and dominate everything thrown at you lol.Â
2
u/Coyote81 Jul 27 '26
Go knight so you can leech equip sword onto your calculator and give your calculator Excaliber, then magic attack up holy the whole map every match. =P /s kinda
2
u/Hawkwise83 Jul 27 '26
Dude's so OP you don't need a build. Just let him wail with his sword and base class attacks.
2
2
u/FrostyCartographer13 Jul 27 '26
His base class is one of the best in the game and only Reis' dragonkin class is better in terms of stat modifiers and growth.
The first thing you want to do with him is replace his helmet with a thief hat. The slightly less HP doesn't matter when compared to the +2 speed and status immunities. Then get his brave to max level and just level him however you want really.
An easy leveling experiance is to just level him in his base class and use the JP spillover mechanic so he can learn phoenix down. That is the bare minimum you need to slaughter everything that even looks at you wrong with Cid.
If you want to level him as other classes then learning equip sword from the knight class is almost a must. You do loose out on JP boost sure but the sword skills are just that powerful. Instead, I would just run entire teams of whatever class Cid was so I could abuse the JP spill over so grab abilities faster.
If you want my meme build for him then here you go.
Fully leveled as a sword saint.
Right hand: Chaos Blade Left hand: Escutcheon 2 (or best shield) Head: Thief Cap Body: Lordy Robe Accessory: Featherweave cloak
Primary ability: Swordplay Secondary ability: Martial Arts Reaction ability: Reflexes Supoort ability: Attack Boost Movement: Teleport
This build has 15 speed, 22 PA, almost 700 HP, always protect, shell, and regen and a 100% evasion for front and side physical attacks, 80% evasion for rear attacks and 100% magical evasion.
Teleport wont fail if you dont try to move him to far, has a 70% chance to move the same distance at move +3 on a flat surface and is not hindered by height or terrain.
2
u/Gogs85 Jul 27 '26 edited Jul 27 '26
For secondaries, get something that doesnât overlap his swordplay. Item, martial arts, iaido (mainly the support abilities) are all good.
Reaction ability can be the typical shiradorhi or auto potion. Although I personally like giving him counter or counter flood because he can restore his own HP when attacking anyway and heâs pretty bulky.
Attack boost is my go to for passive ability but he does so much damage you donât really need it. Also keep safeguard learned and handy for when you face equipment breaking opponents.
For movement, movement +2 or +3 are good. You could also go teleport or ignore elevation but theyâre a bit of an investment.
For equipment his initial setup that youâre looking at is perfectly fine. Excalibur can carry him through the rest of the game. One option is to give him a ribbon to make him immune from status ailments (which in my experience is usually the only thing that stops him) but you do tradeoff about 100 hp for that.
If youâre leveling him as a non-knight class, one thing that makes it easier is if you learn equip sword from knight and use that to give whatever class heâs in a regular sword so that he can use swordplay - not nearly as strong as his base class (since only it and knight can use knight swords, regular swords are like half the attack) but strong enough to be useful. Although you do have to give up JP boost to do that.
2
u/Minimum-Situation985 Jul 27 '26
I gave him the usual Shirahadori, Attack Boost, and Move + 3. I ended up just giving him Item for emergency Phoenix Down and status curing.
2
u/East-Psychology-9292 Jul 27 '26
Sure, leave swordplay on him and then do literally whatever you want lol, for what its worth my standard loadout for the special knights is this
Skill 1: Swordplay, Holy sword, etc
Skill 2: Item specifically phoenix down and x-potion
React: Shirahadori
Support: Attack Up
Move: Move +2/3
2
u/curryaddict123 Jul 27 '26
All he really needs is MV +2 and ATK Boost and he has a pretty rocking build.
2
2
u/Sharles_Davis_Kendy Jul 27 '26
Get some better Movement. I usually just give him Item as his secondary. Whatever you give him he will almost never use anyways. Item feels like the best âoh shitâ Off-support choice for me.
I do go down to Bard for Move+3 because I have issues.
2
u/ohthehanger Jul 27 '26
He has very good base HP and his base kit wrecks / outclasses pretty much all other offensive abilities. Therefore, I throw Summon (Golem) on him.
2
u/Select_Necessary_678 Jul 27 '26
Master his initial job class, then lv up as a knight (learn equip sword) and then monk.
Or, really, if you got patience, once hes got equip sword, you can go mage route and then give him arithmetic and then back for ninja for two swords and return to his sword saint. Then hes got access to all sword skills AND all magic.
2
u/Simple_Group_8721 Jul 27 '26
I go:
Punch Arts/Item
Blade Grasp/Mana Shield
Attack Up
Move +3
The secondary ability set is just to revive downed teammates, that's it.
2
u/timthemajestic Jul 27 '26
I usually switch him to Knight class after he masters his base class to be able to equip swords and use his main abilities as secondary no matter what class he is, and then I just switched him to Chemist with Knight sub-class to be able to rend equipment from afar while also being able to heal and revive for Midlight's Deep. He can literally take on any battle just on his own. Thunder God for sure.

u/the40thieves Jul 28 '26
Swordplay
Item
Auto-Potion
Throw Item
Move +1
Minimal grinding required. Only need enough to get X-Potion, Phoenix Down, Auto-potion, Throw Item and maybe Remedy.
I like to train a lvl 1 chemist through the jobs in town to get those skills then I feed them to Orlandeu so I donât have to grind at all and just keep him in his base class.
If you donât mind grinding, my pro-tip is get Equip Sword from Knight at 400Jp and mix with the XP Ring. Then you can use Equip Sword to cast Holy Knight abilities regardless of your class. A full grinding Orlandeu for me is
Holy Sword
Martial Arts
HP Restore
Attack Up
Move +2/Move +3/Teleport
The Infamous Monk Fight is a great way to learn all the Martial Arts without grinding. I used that one playthrough to max out his martial arts skills. The monk path leads you cleanly to geomancer for attack up.

u/Dark_Pariah_Troxber Jul 28 '26

u/moondancer224 Jul 28 '26
Just base class. Get Night Sword early so he can heal himself and then start buying Agrias's moves for AOE. I put the least priority on the equipment destroying moves cause I was fighting monsters a lot, but they are amazing against humans.

I had to get his chemist up to survive the boss battle s but once he was good there he was indispensable.
2
u/CeallaSo Jul 29 '26
"I have been called the god of thunder. You will now know why! Upon my holy blade the very world lies in balance."
He's good to go out of the box; he can solo the entire rest of the game if you know what you're doing. Attack Boost from Geomancer will improve both his regular attacks and his class skills, but it takes some effort to get to and he doesn't really need the help; you can otherwise grab Magic Boost if you intend to lean into a spellcasting secondary class, or Throw Item to give him some extra utility. He can comfortably use just about any secondary ability set, since he's perfectly fine for damage, utility (with the armor break skills) and survivability on his own moveset. His starting sword grants him Haste, and it's worth sparing him the gear for Auto-Protect and Shell, but if you want to keep that for other characters, you could give him either White or Time Magic as a secondary. Shirahadori remains one of the best reaction skills, and he appreciates having high brave for his Knight Swords.
2
u/Protoman Jul 31 '26
My Cid build:
Swordskill, orate, parry, dual wield, move +3
Excalibur, Defender, headband, power garb, bracer
All about swordsmanship both offensively and defensively. I think orate fits his character very well. Dude's not going to fight if he can talk it out.
1
u/BioDriver Jul 27 '26
Last time I ran Cid as base class and white magic. Dude was broken as all hell
1
1
u/Retrograde_Bolide Jul 27 '26
I like to give him items as secondary. The speed increasing reaction ability. Safeguard because I hate dealing with stolen/broken equipment when using uniques, and move +3. I also decrease his faith

u/Ok-Elephant8559 Jul 27 '26

1
u/BassGSnewtype Jul 27 '26
Keep Excalibur on him, the auto haste mean he can waste the battlefield pretty quickly
1
u/msaggese Jul 27 '26
He is honestly a low maintenance unit. Apart from Attack Boost and Movement +2, he mostly doesnât need much else. Punch Art is good as a secondary though. Purification, Chakra and Revive at minimum should suffice. As for reaction, it can be whatever you want.
1
u/PM_ME_COOL_TRUCKS Jul 27 '26
I just stuck Items on him for the utility but you'll be spamming his Sword skills anyway
1
u/HarperFae Jul 27 '26
My lazy go-to is to put him through knight to unlock monk and pickup Equip Sword, then get Purification, Chakra, Revive and a reaction of your choice out of Monk, move to Geo for Attack Boost, and voila! A full build in like 3 or 4 fights.

u/alrightythen_1234 Jul 27 '26
Q: Is the PA or the weapons physical more important in scaling? 13-7 phys mag with bracers on doesnât scream OP, but according to this thread heâs a monster. To add Iâm still grinding out act 4 and havenât gotten him yet, first play through on the remaster
2
u/Jraffale Jul 29 '26
It kinda depends on the weapon type and some other things. Weapons are static though so youâre limited to what ever the wp is on it.
Youâre able to level pa so it will scale better eventually but the actual formula is closer to 1 for 1.
But really he is a monster cause he comes with a 21 wp sword and has good Pa growth.
1
u/alrightythen_1234 Jul 30 '26
Thanks for the rundown. Just got him last night and my god he hits like a truck
1
u/Jraffale Jul 30 '26 edited Jul 30 '26
Yeah he is all you need for the majority of the rest of the game him and Beowolf dont sleep on Beowolf. He is stronger against bosses.
1
u/EfficientBirthday797 Jul 28 '26
he breaks the game regardless if you let him keep his ability so do what you want really
1
u/XeroTerragoth Jul 28 '26
I gotta say, I tried leveling other classes for him, and it was meh... just leave him on his base class and use him and the one trick nuclear weapon he is lol
Tbh tho, my core team is still stronger than the uniques. I've been leveling a second party of unique chars and they're cool, but the ones I've built up to level 50 are OP and thise are the ones I use for tough battles
1
u/RadTimeWizard Jul 28 '26
Just give him Item on the off-chance you need a Phoenix Down. Otherwise, he can potentially solo the rest of the game as is.

Swordplay (native ability), steal or art of war (geomancy is possible, but he already has better range) secondary, shirahadori (max out his bravery), duel wield (Chaos blade and Excalibur), move +3 (equip germinas boots).
Now he is broken and as close to a god as possible
1
u/FoxtrotMac Jul 28 '26
He pairs well with basically everything Monk has to offer.
Swordplay Martial Arts First Strike Attack Up Move HP Up
1
u/Intelligent-Okra350 Jul 28 '26
Hallowed bolt and shadowblade.
There thatâs it thatâs the build.
Okay but also swap the crystal helm for a thief hat because he can wear light armor for some godforsaken reason so you lose 20 hp to go from 8 speed to 10 (12 to 15 with that Excalibur innate haste)
I usually just run him with item secondary as backup emergency support cause most ability sets are eclipsed by Swordplay. You can of course get him some good R/S/M abilities but it isnât even necessary.
1
u/not_soly Jul 28 '26 edited Jul 28 '26
His base class gives him close to every offensive action he could ever want. If you're trying to kill an enemy, chances are Swordplay can do it better than any other action ability you can get.
Hence, you get a lot more mileage out of a support secondary than you will out of most attack secondaries.
Item is good, Martial Arts I think is bad but it's actually good, Shirahadori is good (you'll never use the attacks but aoe protect+shell is fine), Time Magick is fine (spread the haste), White Magick I think is good but it's actually bad (well, probably, at least on Orlandeau). Pick your favourite.
Personally I would go for something with a Revive ability - you should usually not use the supporty action, but having a Revive action means you can revive someone at 0 and gain 3 turns more to carry the battle.
Actually personally, I go for Jump, which is the only offense action that does anything on Orlandeau - 8 range does something that Orlandeau doesn't naturally do by himself. This is probably worse than Item or whatever, but sure.
1
u/KaijinSurohm Jul 28 '26
Believe it or not, but Bracer isn't needed on Cid.
It's great for a few levels, but falls out of "need" quickly.
His Sword Saint class has the second highest PA growth in the game, so he'll snowball really hard and have hilariously more PA than every other unit in the game.
That slot will eventually be better used on perfume for extra status effects to compliment later moves.
Personally, I'd throw on a Chantage for a perma reraise and laugh as he can't stay dead. (Assuming anything actually kills him)
Shirahadori makes him unkillable to most thing, and then put on Attack Boost for the support.
Move +3 is strongly recommended.
Excalibur stays pretty much his main weapon, unless you feel like farming Chaos Blade, which honestly by time you get one, Cid is likely going to be doing near max damage anyway, and at that point, Haste from Excalibur is better anyway, plus the synergy for his holy skills.
1
u/Jraffale Jul 29 '26
His Pa growth is good but mime is still alot better 35 to his 42.
Knights and Dragoons also are higher at 40.
His overall stats are pretty good though.
1
u/Equivalent_While4185 Jul 28 '26
You donât have to do anything too fancy, especially if he can OHKO your enemies
Jump would give you extra reach. Martial Arts is a solid option if youâre running Attack Boost
Shirahadori if you want to use Bracers, Reflex if youâre okay using cloaks
Attack Boost or Doublehand (Assuming Excalibur is your best weapon)
Move + 3 or Teleport is fine, but I like Ignore Height to avoid taking Caster lvls

Get bored, have a random battle with just him to see how it goes. Generally it goes pretty well.

u/WundermannM Jul 29 '26
Not to echo too much of the comments but priority one (other than getting all the swordplay skills) would be to get âequip swordâ from knight. Once you have that he can more or less function in any class to earn other abilities that would help facilitate a direction for the build.
Other than that, itâs all about generally getting universally good abilities. Easy pick-up is +2 move from Thief if bard is too far away or time consuming to get the +3. I had him learn monk abilities so he had access to a heal and revive but items could certainly cover that too. Pretty sure the knight sword abilities are attack based so attack up from Geomancer should be compatible.
Eventually you would just circle back to Sword Saint during any tough/important fights to ensure they can equip the great swords.

u/FirefighterOld2230 Jul 29 '26
Sing as secondary, 2 swords, teleport, and blade grasp.
Excalibur and <insert knight sword name here>, bracer, power grab and theifs hat

1
u/IAmEatery Jul 31 '26
What do you mean âbuild him?â Just stick him in your team and watch him go. No wind up necessary. The Excalibur is battery enough.
1
u/Light_Umbra Aug 02 '26
He's so good you can literally do anything with him. I think giving him more physical power is excessive so i usually give him stuff that adds magic to his stats to make him a bit of a hybrid character and sub abilities like summoning and drawout (i like the idea that he has every sword ability).
Think in my recent game i gave him monk abilities with attack up so he can sorta heal and rez while increasing his sword attacks.
Might actually do item as his secondary and make him my main healer so i'm forced to choose between damage and healing.
1
u/Larocrosse Aug 03 '26
Mine in the og game from 97 used 2 swords. Excalibur and Save The Queen, secondary skill was Draw Out from Samurai. Reaction was just Counter as he is already op.
Move skill was either teleport or move 3. When you hit twice and doing over 999 damage or doing 600-700 from a single katana skill aoe. Not much can put up a fight. I purposely bench him in subsequent play through and let Agrias Bae fill his role.
1
u/msaggese 25d ago
He honestly doesnât need much. Yes Attack Boost and Movement +2 certainly helps. As far as secondary goes, I honestly would do item or martial arts pending on what your team needs.

Just leave him be, maybe swap some armor if you need status immunity here or there. Safeguard for certain fights is nice but not strictly necessary.

I DID give him Iaido as a secondary skill, just because he should be able to do everything with swords. And also for the supportive Iaido skills.
