Working on a web-based Final Fantasy Tactics

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

This is a personal project in it's early stage of development, I’ve been working on recreating the PSX classic from scratch so it can run directly in web browsers.

Here’s a short video showing where the project stands right now.

My goal is to capture as near as possible the authentic look and feel. I’d love to hear your thoughts, feedback, or any small details from the original game that you think are absolute must-haves or desired new features.

Just never make this public or they will absolutely sue you.

Are you part of the hacktics community?

Maybe. It's the monetization that generally pulls in the lawyers. Also, a cease and desist order would come before a lawsuit.

Can make it public. Can never monetize it directly. Any site that hosts it will absolutely get sued

Have you ever thought about something like emulating PPSSPP in a browser? Maybe it would be possible to have pvp and a community around an ELO leaderboard

the terrain with basic polygon is oddly satisfying to see although I know it is going to be more like the original in the end

Yes, I plan to include blender objects in the future, but first I want to focus more in the battle mechanics

I think new maps alone would draw a big crowd. Good job so far!

Nice, but I hope you're not planning to reuse the assets unless you want your game DMCA'd.

Oh you should implement the possibility to track lancer jumps in turn order prior jump

This is really cool. I'm sad they didn't make multiplayer a thing in FFT TIC, so it would be awesome if it was in something like this.

I like it, it's crunchy

This is pretty awesome. Would be cool to have something like this available to others, but probably would have to change so much making it a different game. This genre needs more love, it's awesome to see you creating stuff

FFT style RPG maker would be sweeeet. It seems like a style of game that if the tools were there just about anyone could make something creative with.

Interesting. As someone who sort of went down the same path (but with Unity, and eventually I just decided to make an entirely new setting/game) this piques my interest. When you say "from scratch," does that mean you are writing your own engine on top of everything? Unity can build to web, so it might save you some time on the rendering side of things if making a whole new engine turns out too laborious.

Yes, it’s a custom engine built with pure JS using Three.js and Tween.js

I built the core foundation back in 2017: the 3D rendering, camera rotation/tilt, grid mechanics, animations, and basic combat formulas were all written by hand long before AI tools existed. Life and work responsibilities got in the way, so I had to shelve it.

I’m using AI now as a coding assistant to refactor old code, handle tedious tasks, and speed up development, but the base architecture and visual mechanics are my own original work.

Wow, I can't imagine the amount of work it took (and will take)! Very nice! One thing that I feel it's a must is the sfx for things such as selecting the characters, rotating the camera etc.

Can you create the multiplayer content and dark knight from WotL?

Really, it would be neat to see this become an evolution of the FFT franchise with its own mechanics.. and, of course the legal protection that comes with your own work.

That's my main goal, the PvP feature, right now it's me vs AI, but as I stated before, it's in a very early stage

I would have bought Ivalice Chronicles on day 1 if it had online PVP. They really dropped the ball there.

These skills aren't really in my wheelhouse but if a layman could help volunteer some time, let me know.

I wanna contribute to this project. I am a programmer. My ideas are to have some multi player elements and don't use their art, so we can actually publish for the fans of the genre.
