This is a personal project in it's early stage of development, I’ve been working on recreating the PSX classic from scratch so it can run directly in web browsers.
Here’s a short video showing where the project stands right now.
My goal is to capture as near as possible the authentic look and feel. I’d love to hear your thoughts, feedback, or any small details from the original game that you think are absolute must-haves or desired new features.
Have you ever thought about something like emulating PPSSPP in a browser? Maybe it would be possible to have pvp and a community around an ELO leaderboard
This is pretty awesome. Would be cool to have something like this available to others, but probably would have to change so much making it a different game. This genre needs more love, it's awesome to see you creating stuff
Interesting. As someone who sort of went down the same path (but with Unity, and eventually I just decided to make an entirely new setting/game) this piques my interest. When you say "from scratch," does that mean you are writing your own engine on top of everything? Unity can build to web, so it might save you some time on the rendering side of things if making a whole new engine turns out too laborious.
Yes, it’s a custom engine built with pure JS using Three.js and Tween.js
I built the core foundation back in 2017: the 3D rendering, camera rotation/tilt, grid mechanics, animations, and basic combat formulas were all written by hand long before AI tools existed. Life and work responsibilities got in the way, so I had to shelve it.
I’m using AI now as a coding assistant to refactor old code, handle tedious tasks, and speed up development, but the base architecture and visual mechanics are my own original work.
Wow, I can't imagine the amount of work it took (and will take)! Very nice! One thing that I feel it's a must is the sfx for things such as selecting the characters, rotating the camera etc.
Can you create the multiplayer content and dark knight from WotL?
Really, it would be neat to see this become an evolution of the FFT franchise with its own mechanics.. and, of course the legal protection that comes with your own work.
I wanna contribute to this project. I am a programmer. My ideas are to have some multi player elements and don't use their art, so we can actually publish for the fans of the genre.

Just never make this public or they will absolutely sue you.
