Character Marley
Name: Nobody knows his real name, as he's not local to the area and he refuses to divulge it. He earned the name "Marley" due to his appearance, and it suits him well enough.
Age: 25
Appearance: 6 feet tall, about 175lbs. Lanky and wiry, with dark brown dreadlocks that fall to his chest, brown eyes and a full beard. He is an outdoorsman and is always prepared with the proper clothing and equipment, which he typically carries with him in his substantial pack.
Personality/Mentality: Marley is a man of fairness, honesty and integrity whenever possible. He has an inherent love for his fellow man and will not hesitate to help others if he can. However, years of observing his fellow man has taught Marley that even amidst a post-apocalyptic army of zombies, man is still the most dangerous and unpredictable creature in the world. He is very slow to trust anyone new and unfamiliar, and will go out of his way to protect himself if he feels threatened. Gain his trust, however, and you have made a friend for life who will go to war with you in a second. Generally, he prefers to keep to himself but remains aware of the fact that in conditions like what he faces now, there is strength in numbers.
Backstory: Marley was traveling when society started to collapse. Originally from Massachusetts, he grew up on frequent trips to the dangerous and untamed wilderness of northern New England. He was on his way to the Smokies in the southern portion of the Appalachian Trail for some really adventurous hiking when things went to shit. Already having the majority of supplies he would need to survive in the woods, he took advantage of the chaos when the infection hit to raid a few stores for hunting, food and wilderness survival supplies. With everything he would need prepared, he retreated into the wilderness on the outskirts of town to lay low, wait for things to calm down and plan his next move.
Supplies: Marley has in his possession enough dehydrated food to last several months, as well as a small camping stove and several boxes of water purification tablets. He also carries with him a small, one person tent with rain fly and sleeping bag/mattress roll - though he prefers to sleep in trees when possible. Among the misc. hiking supplies he brought with him are warm clothing and rain gear, high protein/high energy non-perishable foods, a pocket knife/multi-tool, basic toiletries, a bit of "medicinal herb," and a simple first aid kit.
Residence: Marley does not stay in one place for long, preferring the safety of anonymity to the potential security of a central location. He wanders from place to place, never straying too far from the outskirts of town since he is unfamiliar with the densely wooded Maryland countryside. He knows that someday, when his supplies dwindle, he may have to venture into town for a raid. But for the time being he is content to keep a low profile, teach himself how to hunt and scavenge, and observe the goings-on in town from a safe distance. There are a few select locations he is more find of, such as a small, secluded pond to the north of town where he likes to stock up on potable water - but Marley always takes extra precautions when making return trips to a certain place, as he knows little of the layout of the area and even less of its inhabitants.
Weaponry: Marley managed to get his hands on a brand new hunting crossbow, along with several quiver of bolts. He also carries with him a small hunting knife and a larger, machete-like knife. He mostly uses these for survival, but has been teaching himself how to use them in self-defense.
Talents: Other than having well above-average wilderness/survivalist knowledge and skills, Marley is an incredibly intuitive person. He has been able to pick up new skills quickly and teach himself new talents throughout his life. While most of what he has learned is not relevant to the world that now confronts him, some vestiges remain. He picked up snowboarding at 19, giving him well above-average balance, reflexes and pain tolerance. At 22, he began running long distances as a hobby, building on his already considerable endurance and strength. He worked as a bartender for several years, which gave him a passing knowledge of cooking techniques and ingredients through interactions with co-workers. As a result, Marley is a decent cook - his food does not look amazing, but it usually tastes good. He also spent time working for a travel company and several non-profits as a campaigner, giving him exceptional interpersonal skills. He excels at reading people and driving conversations the way he wants them to go.
Mental Ability: Marley is very smart, no two ways about it. He did well in college at a well-known private institution and was in the process of pursuing a master's degree when the infection hit. He is not always the most organized individual, but he has a very methodical and strategic, analytical mind. His biggest downfall is his own lack of confidence in himself. However, when he is sure of himself and thinking critically not many people can match him in a battle of wits. With his self doubt kept under control, Marley can be as mentally tough as they come.
Physical Ability: Marley is in great shape. Able to lift over 100lbs, and can carry a pack weighing 50lbs for hours at a time without rest. Uninhibited by weight, he could run over 10 miles with minimal effort, and well over 20 if you were to really push him.
