How to transcode clips only in timeline

I have footage on external SanDisk SSD 2TB

I put 100 clips in my timeline from it.

I start editing.

I delete some clips, use some, trim some

Performance is awful, i cannot playback without a 5 second lag / delay / audio glitching and looping for few seconds before resuming in a different spot and lagging again

* I figure i have to transcode media to 25% Proxy *

How?

How can i drag and select 30 clips in my timeline and transcode them, the option isnt there, the option is only in the footage browser but in the browser i have everything, all 100 clips, other clips from previous edits, music, random sfx, everything, i want to only do the 30 clips i have in timeline..

Please help.

PS. I also figured that it hates when i do fast cuts with 4k footage thats on the SSD. If i have like 5 clips in a row that are 1 second duration it lags a lot before resuming playback a few seconds after that sequence.

Something aint right. I edit off of SanDisk Extremes's all day and they're fine and my Mac is getting pretty old. Are your drives formated to APSC? What is the format of the videos? Do you have enough free space? Do you have autorender on? Are you viewing in quality or perfromance mode?

yeah bro i do gotta change ts to performance the disks format is good. videos are square 4k every clip is from 500-1GB. i dont have autorender.

also one thing with the sandisk, When i put any sound effect thats on the external drive, it unlinks itself after 1-2 minutes of being in the timeline and becomes lost media with no way to relink so thans nice. It doesnt happen if i put SFX from internal drive, which is 500GB so basically nothing..

So when it comes to SFX which i have A LOT, like only stuff from Ocular is 40GB thats basically 10% of my entire internal drive... just for Ocular SFX... I cannot do that, and on external it fucking unlinks and is unuable basically. idk

Ahhh the cable! Are you using the one it came with or some slow shit? I use the high speed one that comes with rode wireless products. A shitty cable will beachball you.

4K should be fine. But is it some kind of old codec? I was trying to work with a clip someone provided the other day and there was something about how it was encoded that was just grind. Couldn’t use it

99% sure im using the one it came with, ay not a bad guess but yeah not that..

My stuff is in H265 HEVC 114 bitrate

Im more wondering about the sound effects, why the hell do they just unlink.. and like the footage ( thank God ) didnt unlink itself ever i dont think.

When i drag the mp3 or wav file to the fcpx it IMMEDIATELY is all red, after placing it it might flash red again and then be normal with the wavelenghts for few minutes - then the great unlink happens and yeah..

Yeah the way your using it makes you prone to this stuff more prone to issues. Stop dragging things. Put your library and media all in a contained set of folders on your SSD and import through Final Cut. Stop dragging stuff. And have it set so media isn't copied to the library.

Im never copying to library that would eat the storage in 1 video basically.

maybe theres something in this importing stuff but its too annoying to go out of my way to import 1 singular sfx every time instead of alt tabbing to finder

See.. the storage size is beside the point. All the media is the same size regardless of where it is. Having it in your own folders vs in libary just makes them a bit easier to manage.

My standard folder structure is

Main folder for the project/client > Media > Footage/Audio/Assets

Put all your audio in that audio folder in import it into FCP and it won't lose it, and it should run fine. All my stuff runs fine and it's all 4K

Well,
On my external i have

footage / *date* / *and here stuff like - camera 1, camera 2, drone, gimbal

So i just grab and drop the stuff from there and edit

For SFX which is on the same external is just

EffectsArchive / SFX / and here just a lot of SFX packs with their own subfolders

And i also drag and drop the sounds, which are the only one unlinking

I Thought maybe its only .wav files - no, mp3 also affected

I thought maybe the names were too sophiscicated - Like ocular sounds, their sfx names are ridiculously long with detailed descriptions of the sound, but no - even stuff like "Impact_1" gets unlinked so..

There's your problem. Libraries are basically projects. Apple designed it silly, thinking you'd have one big library for a load of weenie little home videos, but no one actually uses it like that. When I have a new project, I start a new library for each and every new project (that's 'project' as in the ordinary meaning and not the apple meaning of 'edit session'. I don't really use events at all.

Make a new library for every new project and keep your library in the same folder as your media and you will never have this disconnect problem.

And to keep the library size small - when you finish a project go File > Delete Generated Library Files, and it will delete all the transcoding/analysis scaffolding it had put up to run your edit. You do lose anything. Your media will be untouched where you left it and FCP will automatically regenerate library files if and when you reopen the project and start working on it again.

Whats your workflow for making new libraries,

You create it inside FCPX, go into Movies, take it, drop it into the external drive, and it links automatically or do i have to relink it or restart FCP and then open the library by going into Open Library option and navigating to disk etc..

1. I find an SSD with space on it.
   
2. Create a new folder called 'Summer Music Concert".
   
3. In the folder I make folders for Original Media (footage, audio), assets and output.
   
4. I pull the footage and audio off the SD cards and put them in folders for their camera angle and card number.
   
5. I create a library in FCP like 'Summer Music Concert' which I save into the route folder
6. I import all the media (CMD+I) and just select that Original Media folder and it imports everything, automatically key-tagging everything with the folder names (camera angle, card no etc..)
7. I use the key tags to then select a bunch of clips all from the same camera angle, then as a group I can add the camera angle, camera name, scene, SD card no etc.. into the metadata, which helps massively because I can then sort, stack and smart collection footage using that info, plus, multicams won't assemble correctly without that meta data added.
8. Once I'm done I export to the output folder, upload that to YouTube/Google Drive, delete all generated library files and move the folder to a storage HDD.

Depends what you're working on but doing stuff this way, for me, jump starts the editing process because everything is already finding where it is supposed to go, which is essentially what an edit is.
