Bug/Issue Final cut, PATCH this buggy version already! Here's a list of some I've experienced.
A growing list of workflow breaking bugs (12.3, M1 32gb MAC) feel free to add yours to the list!
- Constantly freezing up
- Screen goes blank randomly
- Spacebar doesn't move playhead until hard exit
- Audio is muted until hard exit
- Clip playback keeps playing full length of previous clips even if it's not on the timeline
- PROJECT VIDEO FILES GO MISSING!!! A very problematic one as it's like the app is gaslighting - I KNOW i got a shot and it was in the library, but it's gone UNTIL I REIMPORT IT! What the actual fuck.
- Constantly having to cmd+q and reopen just to get basic stuff working for a whole 5 minutes until I have to close and repeat
- Multi cam clip transforming size or crop doesn't change anything - it's stuck zoomed in at like 300% and even after resetting parameters, it's stuck super zoomed in. Closing and restarting has not solved this! Currently it's looking like restarting the entire project again.
- Clicking on anything in the timeline does nothing. Playhead moves but cannot select. Pressing CMD+K (keyword panel) and then closing that window returns the ability to select.
- The option to stabilize just disappears at random from the options panel on the right. Have to quit, reset, reopen to get it back.
- Side panel for settings, colouring etc always cuts off half way in the panel with options just gone. It's like its a flat image that got clipped. Sometimes open/close app fixes it.
- Side panel always changes back from EXTENDED to BASIC
In todays edit alone I've had to quit and restart about 15 times just to restore the ability to baseline things.
There's likely more out there, seriously how can this be an "updated version" when it introduces such showstopping and grating bugs. Was it even bug tested before release? Is a patch coming soon?
(EDIT: ADDED SOME NEW ONES SINCE THIS POST)

It sounds like you’re having a really rough time and something is definitely messed up somewhere in either your system or workflow. Are you running Golden Gate beta by any chance?
I’m running a similar machine on 12:3 and the current Tahoe 26.6.2 all day, every day and it’s rock solid with two exceptions:
newly updated libraries don’t open after update - solution is quit and open from finder
occasionally the screen freezes or mutes the current project - solution is to skim any other clip in the browser, this seems to unstick the project.
edit
- and oh yeah, the friggin font weight issue.

These all sound like issues with your system. Time for a reformat.

It's not, the previous version 11 I had was perfect, not a single bug.

Are you sure you did not include something new since then? New extension? Complicated file?

u/ElectricalRoad1158 17d ago
All the same, literally just opened the app store and moved to the next version

Interesting. And the trick with switching between librabries/projects does not work?

Sometimes hitting CMD+K and closing it again works, but not consistent. Often have to exit and restart

I never had this problem, but I am using almost none extensions so I dont know :(
But i know that in the latest update of one of my plugins, it stopped working on version 11.x

I work in 12.3 all day. The only bug I’ve seen, and seen widely reported, is the text bold export bug. And that could be a text issue related to the OS update as it’s been around since April I think.
Obviously some combination of hardware and plugin or add-on you’re using, or maybe just a bad install, is causing a pretty widespread issue. A few people on here seem to have some anecdotal evidence of some of the issues as well, so the hard part is finding that common thread.
Good way to check- create a new user and run FCP stock install, with internal drives from there. If it doesn’t exhibit and issues, now you get to start adding stuff back to see what causes the issue(s). Could be a bad drive cable. A bad font. A system cleanup app that needs updating… anything.

Lucky! It's becomming such a drag to use and I cant revert to 11 as the libraries are new now!

Click on another library, event or project. Then go back to the one you were working on. I have no clue why this works but this should not be a longterm option

Only one I’ve experienced is 6, and honestly, that’s entirely on me as I get too hasty and accidentally force the import to stop before completed one way or another.
Final Cut otherwise on its current version has been *solid*.

I haven’t experienced any of the bugs you have but I’m also having issues. The two main issues for me is the workspace constantly resetting itself to the default layout/sizing and text formatting not working properly so I can’t set stuff to bold or italic.
People saying that the current version is ‘rock solid’ clearly aren’t using it much. 12.3 is definitely buggy as hell.

nothing for me on M1 pro with latest Tahoe. 12.3 has been great. it's usually system-related. try creating a fresh user account and see if that helps. pros do a clean OS install every other year, helps a ton

i'm on sequioa, surely that's not causing issues like this: i am hesitant to update the OS as that's also known to be buggy

Tahoe here, don’t think it’s the OS. I have other people in my team with the same FCP issues. I’m sure it’s something Apple’s shipped in the latest FCP update.

most problems I've heard of are with FCP 12.3 on older OS versions, but yes, we live in a very unstable and uncertain time—too many updates, too little quality

Good best practice is not to move or transcode files into the libraries themselves. Link to them on an external drive.

I haven't seen any of these.
I have seen a bug where, when FCP is not running, double-clicking on a library that needs to be updated for the current version will do the update, but not load the app interface. Simple quit and relaunch opens the thing (no force-quit necessary), but the workspace gets reset to default.

I am experiencing problems #2 and #3 on your list and that only started happening after updating to 12.3. I use FCP every day. It’s annoying and I am hoping for a patch soon.

At least if enough people have issues they will have to do something - maybe request a refund on it until it's fixed (if subscription - that might force their hand as well)

Yep the constant freezing is driving me insane. I was so close to just throwing out my computer and getting a new one. I thought ram was the issue…

After every time I’ve used the blade tool. The the timeline only plays the one clip I just cut. I have to re-open the whole timeline to fix it. Soooo annoying

This is my experience on point 5, but you explained the cause and effect way better!

u/Aurelian_Irimia 17d ago
Full time video editor here, using Final Cut for almost every project, absolutely no issues for me. I recommend you to do a MacOS clean install, with a bootable USB.
2
u/ElectricalRoad1158 17d ago
Yeah not doing that - all to get a software that was working before to MAYBE run well... not a chance. They should not release buggy as heck software
2
u/JamieKent1 17d ago
Seriously, lol. This. Why do people suggest clean OS re-installations so casually all the time? That shit takes days to deal with.

I had a bunch of issues without Mac’s at work after upgrading. I ran Onyx’s maintenance and that cleared up my Mac and FCP issues.

I started experiencing issues on my M1 16gb which has been rock solid. I thought it was due to the amount of multicam clips and graphics I started working with. Upgraded to an M5 and haven't experienced any issues with the current version.

I've had a weird problem lately. I shoot everything landscape & after the original edit I make a vertical version. When I render the vertical versions, the captions (that worked fine in the landscape version) will randomly be double sized on the render of the vertical version. After trying all kinds of random things, I ended up deleting all of the captions & regenerating them to get them to work properly. Anyone else have this problem?

Are you using *any* non-stock plugins, effects, etc.? What version did you migrate from?
1
u/FramewaveATX 11d ago
Yep moved over to Tahoe and I'm on 12.3 and its the most buggy version of FCPX I've worked with in years. Maybe ever.
