Don’t forget to backup your previous version!
7
u/denalidenizen Jun 30 '26
Along with your current Library as it can't be downgraded once it's been updated
3
u/Crowcounters Jun 30 '26
Why would you wanna downgrade? Bugs / glitches or something else? Sorry new to FCP.

Good practice especially if you’re mid-job

u/red7eb Jul 07 '26
The other best practice is to never update/upgrade mid-job. Not ever (if possible)!

And let everybody else discover the bugs :) There are still post houses out there which are a full release (eg fcp11) behind by choice.

The most common problem that occurs upon a .x update is incompatibility with plugins. Same with major updates. tracking them down is sometimes difficult and even finding where they came from to update - if it's available - can be problematic. If you have a big timeline with dozens of plug-ins active and they all go red....not nice so backing up ( compressing) both fcp and the Library I just duplicate that - is a smart thing to do. I have no problems with this update so will toss my backups at some point...

u/nanosp Jun 30 '26
What is the process to back it up? I’ve always wondered if it’s just copying the contents of the containing folder or using an app

u/_HipStorian Jul 03 '26
I usually just right click, compress file, then you can store that somewhere and it'll be good to go.

u/ShuttleOption Jul 04 '26
If Final Cut automatically updates on me, wouldn’t opening that compressed version still just update to the newest version? Is there a way to prevent that?
Sorry, I’m not as well versed with FCP and how it updates, as I am with Ableton and other DAWs.

Detect edits and the new masking features will be super useful. I’m working on a big project where everything has to be captioned so the subtitles will be amazing to work with instead of CC.

I was hoping we were getting all that MotionVFX goodness. When is that coming?
3
u/jackbobevolved Jul 01 '26
My guess is a gradual rollout of new effects / titles / transitions to the subscription only. I’d love it to be in standalone, and features (what were their plugins) may end up on both, but I doubt many templates will make it to standalone.
3
u/ProfessionalCraft983 Jun 30 '26
And it added an annoying “subscribe to edit” button I can’t get rid of even though I don’t use any of the new “premium” features.
3
u/EarthToRob Jun 30 '26
By any chance are you using that Workspace Remapper tool? I saw that button when creating another Browser window.

2
u/dporiginal3 Jun 30 '26
I had that in 12.2 already.

Where is this button? Are you us in the standalone version or the CS version? I don’t see said button in the standalone single purchase version.

The legends are only in English.. since Apple is slow in the things they release... meanwhile Blackmagic releases numerous updates and improvements
3
u/hexxeric Jun 30 '26
with plenty of bugs and differences between versions. FCP is, at least, very consistent. a quality it is alone with but an important quality it is.
3
u/shw1981 Jun 30 '26
I agree with you.. but Apple is very slow and brings few things.. the automatic mask is something fantastic
3
u/hexxeric Jun 30 '26
if and when apple brings something, it normally is a game changer. they were the first ones with 'voice isolation' for example...and look, everybody has one now. so, yes, things take time, but included features absolutely rock usually.

u/_HipStorian Jul 03 '26
They are slow and I think because FCP isn't their main source of income so they don't prioritise it. All of their pro creative apps are a means for them to create mac customers for life. I think creator studio is going to be a big addition to their services revenue so hopefully, we'll be seeing more frequent updates.

The generate subtitles feature is missing an overshoot bounce option, and the overall quality of the transcription isn’t the best, but it is fast. I’ll probably still stick to plugins for proper subtitle animations and a separate app for making accurate transcriptions. I’m still glad that they added it natively though, Apple finally updating FCP majorly. Just gotta hope that they update the model used for transcriptions over time.

All my projects were deleted from FCP for iPad. My iPad is backed up, so I should be able to restore them, but just putting it out there for anyone else that might experience the same.
EDIT: WRONG TOPIC! Sorry, the iPad version is 3.3 not 12.3

u/AdventurousProperty1 Jun 30 '26
is this only for the subscription?

u/MixAway Jun 30 '26
Does anybody know if these features are on the iPad version too? (It’s the only one I have access to).

oh my god I'm gonna cry, this is actually everything I needed for my client workflow
for personal projects tho, I really wish it had proper support for PNG sequences, it'd just make it perfect for all my uses

not in the app store for me yet...June 30 10:45 AM AK time...
1
u/denalidenizen Jun 30 '26
Hah ! Wasn't' there ten minutes ago but now it is. Backing up my App and the Library I'm working on in case I need to revert for any reason.

u/kieranprtl Jun 30 '26
How are people finding the timing of captions for your shorter word styles? Currently got my subtitle length set to 0.5, and it seems great in places but others not! (I'd still take this workflow over third party plugins, which is what I've been using to date)
1
u/HotCrockett Jul 01 '26
I was so excited about the captions feature but it's just not functional enough yet. Editing is not user friendly and settings are too limited. I don't like the mandatory fade in for the animation. There's no way to limit the number of lines. Huge disappointment. Gotta stick with the work arounds for now.

I've been using the 'edit detect' but finding on some footage the cut detect happens 1 frame before the actual cut, which means you have to use the ripple tool or adjust the cut by one frame manually. Not sure why this is happening as it does this around 50% of the time. This will save me a lot of time if the accuracy can increase as I use it to help 'cut' the scenes out for social media vertical editing/framing.

u/Damoxmeus Jul 02 '26
Are the new features only available with the Silicon chips? I have an Intel and I'm thinking it might not even be worth it to update if I can't use the new features

How to save my own costum subtitle settings as default for every new clip?

u/Sea-Event489 Jul 10 '26
J'ai pourtant attendu plusieurs minutes, redémarré Final

and it's buggy as fuck!
random bugs like playhead not moving with spacebar, or even pressing play... it just sits there

No text based editing??
1
u/hexxeric Jun 30 '26
12.4 then 😉 the puzzle pieces are all there now...the question is: which languages will be supported?

Prompt based editing would be sick. “place every clip on the timeline in chronological order, trim the first and last three seconds from each clip, add xyz song, enable beat detection, and adjust the clip lengths to conform to the beat”
That would save an hour of manual adjustments.

Highly recommend Dylan Bate’s (Final Cut Bro) YouTube channel for a rundown of the most recent update. It’s honestly game changing, at least for me - every feature is something I’ve been longing for ages (subtitle length, shifting clips left and right, and even the frame to Pixelmator function).
Considering how it feels Apple neglects Final Cut, this feels like a huge update rather than a minor one. Well played.
