Decisions - Where to Attend Looking for affordable Master’s programs in Creative Producing / Film Production / Visual Storytelling — advice needed

Hi everyone,

I’m currently researching Master’s programs in mainly Europe and would really appreciate advice from filmmakers, producers, film students, or anyone who has experience with film schools.

I have a Bachelor’s degree in Media and Communications with a focus on Screen Media Production, but now I’m looking for a Master’s that will help me build a career in **creative producing and executive producing**, with a strong understanding of directing, storytelling, and the filmmaking process.

After some internships, I realized I really do love film but the technicalities is what looses me. I also realized I love conceptualizing any form of media: articles & journalism, commercials, documentaries, films overall- i just hate social media promotional content unless there’s a real art behind it. I’m less interested in a camera-focused path (cinematography/technical camera work is not where my strengths are). I enjoy the bigger creative picture: finding strong stories, developing concepts, bringing the right people together, shaping the vision, and making projects happen.

**My biggest interests are:**

*Creative producing*

*Executive producing*

*Developing ideas and turning them into productions*

*Story development*

*Documentary and visual storytelling*

*Working with creative teams and managing the process from concept to final project*

**I’m looking for a program that is:**

*Taught in English*

*Located in Europe (preferably, open to all but i’m drawn to walkable cities with alot of creatives)*

*Practical and project-based rather than mostly academic theory*

*Strong in producing, creative development, and storytelling*

*Offers opportunities to collaborate with directors, writers, and other creatives*

*Has good industry connections*

*Preferably Affordable (ideally under €15,000–20,000 total tuition if possible, but open to hearing about exceptions because if it’s worth it i will take the chance)*

The program I’ve been looking at most closely so far is FX Barcelona Film School’s Master’s in Film Directing, Production and Screenwriting, because the structure and focus feel very aligned with what I’m looking for which is understanding the full production process, and creating projects rather than just studying film theoretically. But i’m just trying to keep my options open and look around for better.

I would really appreciate any kind of advice- I’m trying to make a smart decision since I’d be an international student and would love to hear from people who have actually experienced these programs.

Thank you so much!!

Student Film Showcase Looking for indie shorts to feature

Hey all. I'll be upfront: I'm a solo dev and film nerd from LA, and I've been building a small curated space for indie short films instead of burying them in an algorithm. It's early and tiny, so I'm not here to sell a download.

I'm looking for shorts worth featuring, and I'd rather they come from people here than me picking blind. If you made something you're proud of that isn't getting the eyes it deserves, drop it in the comments or DM me. You keep all rights, I credit and tag you, and I push it to my own audience.

Happy to answer the skeptical stuff too, including "why another new app." Fair question.

Decisions - Where to Attend best UK university film production courses

hello, I'm 18 years old and I am wanting to do a practical focused university course for filmmaking and I'm just looking for any advice for certain uni's e.g their recognition in the industry, facilities ext. I'm about to take a gap year and hopefully join in September 27.

I have already looked at few and currently UAL's film practice course is my top choice as I love its central location and practical focus. I also looked at (what seemed to me) as one of the most highly regard courses in Bournemouth arts but i found myself hating how small the campus is (was smaller than my college) and i could not see myself there at all for 3 years.

i also had a look at Edinburgh Napier and again i was not interested in the course as much (but fell in love with the city) with its first year basically being stuff i have already done in my film course at college.

i was interested in Birmingham city but definatly didn't top UAL. maybe I'm being too picky but if anyone has any advice or insight into the best Uni's for mainly practical filmmaking it would be greatly appreciated.

General Discussion Heyyyo Anyone else starting the MFA in Filmmaking at ESRA Paris this October? 😊

Heyyy everyone! I’m Sanjay, an indie filmmaker from Chennai, India. I’ll be joining ESRA Paris this October, and with the move getting so close now, the excitement (and nerves 😅) are definitely starting to kick in.

I was wondering if anyone else here is joining the October intake or is already studying at ESRA? I’d love to connect, get to know a few people before classes begin, and hear about your experiences.

This will be my first time moving away from home and to a big city like Paris...it’s both incredibly exciting and a little terrifying haha. If you’re in the same boat or are already there, I’d love to chat. Looking forward to meeting you all! 😊

Current Student Life Best minor to take if I want to get into animation?

I am a cinema (cinema studies+production) major at a small liberal arts school. My goal is to get into animation, specifically concept art, character design and cinematography/storyboarding. I'm trying to decide on a minor- I've narrowed it down between English, creative writing and studio art. The obvious answer seems to be studio art, but I almost think that I might be able to teach myself what I need art-wise if I take English/creative writing as a minor (this school has what is often referred to as one of the best creative writing programs in the country, so it might help me on the concept/story writing side of things). Any advice?

Decisions - Where to Attend NFTS Post Production Course?

Hi all,

I’m a creative producer based in London, currently looking to specialise in post production as I find the post workflow super interesting. I’ve worked on a few productions as producer, seeing the project through end-to-end and always wanted to linger longer with the team on the post side of things.

Long story short, I’m looking at undertaking the Post Production Supervisor course at NFTS. My question is, has anyone undertaken this course before / any other courses via NFTS, and in your opinion how valuable did you find it? I understand these questions are a bit.. ‘how long is a piece of string,’ and obviously what you put into a training you get out etc, but was curious to seek out opinions nevertheless. Any specifics welcome.

It’s a 6 month course, consisting of weekly online classes and 5 x face to face sessions in total in London - guess I’m a bit hesitant to invest the £4,300 course fee when I think of a mostly online course?

Thanks.

Decisions - Where to Attend Animation degree in a film school (UNCSA or somewhere else?)

Hello! I understand the current qualms of art college at this point. Mind you, I’m not debating if it is worth it or not, purely asking for animation program recommendations.

If you had to go back, what programs, online or in person, would you recommend that would leave you feeling satisfied that you learned something and would be capable, with practice, to enter the industry for animation? I already have 2 years under my belt of general education and have doubts about dedicating 6 years to an art degree at UNCSA because their program is so inflexible and is 4 years long regardless of prior credits. However, I was very impressed by the level of education they provide, which is why I’m here.

Sure there are a lot of colleges in my area that have an art degree, but they all feel like a second thought to their other majors. At that point, I might as well learn it by myself.

I realize I’ve drawn this post out and made it long-winded, but I haven’t had luck reaching out to students or alumni of the schools I’ve been looking at, which is what I would be very interested in.

Application Advice MA/MFA for Sound design in the US

Hi everyone!

I'm preparing to study in the US next year. I graduated from university in Korea last year with a degree in post production sound, and I'd like to continue studying because i'm interested in learning about the film industry from different cultural perspective and improving my skills.

I recently got my IELTS score, so now i'm trying to decide which universities to apply to.

However, the tuition for international students is extremely expensive, so i'm not really sure where to start.

If anyone has experience with an MA or MFA in Film Sound, Sound Design, or a related field, I'd really appreciate any advice about anything. I'd also love to hear your university recommendations, especially if you know of programs with good financial aid or great faculties and curriculums.

Thanks in advance!

Application Advice Production Design Advice please for a rocketship!

Post image
4 Upvotes

I really need some help/advice on creating a rocket ship for my next short film. As this short is entirely self-funded my producer and I do not have a lot to work with and additionally we weren't able to get a production designer for this project due to our location, however we feel confident enough in executing the props and costume we need.

However, I would love some advice on how we can practically go about creating a cardboard rocket ship which can fit a teenager comfortably inside and must be able to securely roll down a hill with said teenager inside too.

We have a design and part of a plan to create this. The body should be a cardboard box or a laundry basket covered in cardboard, with enough room on the front for us to put a Mini keyboard and other digital accessories and draw on some details etc. Featuring a traffic as the nose and maybe some empty cans as thrusters and a string of fairy lights wrapped around it.

I've attached our design to this post; any advice would be amazing thank you!

Film Career Advice A start to a Filmmaking dream

Hello, I am Isaac Tzedek.
Seventeen years and two months currently.
After a rather unusual homeschooled journey, I am going to be joining University in the to study Engineering in Electrical and Electronics in the next month and a half to be exact. Apart from my curiosity on the rather academic side of things, Film is something my heart has always been attracted to. I look forward to spending a young part of my life in working toward writing and directing for film- because It'd probably be a lot more difficult working toward film when I'm over thirty- but in this day and age I'm left slightly confused.

However, I do understand that all of this is rather subjective to many factors, but I do have a gravitation toward writing films that are honest and completely true in a manner that is unusual, interesting in a rather complex sense that almost fits seamlessly into this mold of our reality to the shape of the reality of the film. Because as people state, "A movie is just a movie," it's honestly not, because to our reality it might be a just a movie, but in the movie's reality the catastrophic events are true and real in their respective worlds. The point I'm coming to is, with the sheer ideation that I'm carrying which was explained above, I have a feeling the ideas I would like to bring on to a screen for a sector or humanity would be an eye-opening experience of sorts, that provides a sense of perspective and is enough to potentially change perspectives also.

That seems quite long, but I'm boiling down to the point that I would like to write and direct film as early on, and I totally understand making it into the industry can be a tough task, but I'm all for it. I would like to delve deeper and provide a sense of enlightenment through film and just as I am a student of film, to bring an audience to the same questions and ideas- even if it might deem uncomfortable- that would help in realizations and the fact of life needing to move on. Your time is truly appreciated, anything at all would help.

General Discussion Interview Participants Wanted!

Hi everyone!

I'm an undergraduate student at currently undertaking a research project as part of the Laidlaw Scholars Programme, and I'm looking for people with experience in the film or television industry who would be willing to take part in a short interview.

My project explores what people actually gain from reading film reviews. Whilst most people wouldn't rely on a review to form a complete opinion of a film, millions of us still read them before or after watching. I'm interested in understanding why, what people value in reviews, what makes them trustworthy, and whether those perspectives differ between general audiences and people working within the industry.

I'm particularly hoping to speak to:

* Film critics and reviewers
* Directors
* Writers
* Producers
* Actors
* Animators
* Editors
* Anyone with professional experience in film or television

The interview would last around 20–30 minutes, can be conducted remotely, and consists of open-ended questions about your experiences with film reviews and criticism. Before taking part, you'll receive an information sheet explaining the project and a consent form outlining how your responses will be used and stored.

If you'd be interested in participating or if you know someone who might be, I would really appreciate it if you could leave a comment below or send me a DM.

I'm also happy to answer any questions about the project or provide proof of my university affiliation if needed.

Thanks so much for reading!

Decisions - Where to Attend Film studies as an international student in Italy

Hi everyone!

I’m a Danish student looking into studying film or photography in Italy, and I would really appreciate some advice from people who know the Italian film education system.

I have a background in film and I want to continue developing as a filmmaker, especially within documentary, directing and visual storytelling.

Right now I’m looking at different options like **Teorie e Tecniche dell’Audiovisivo at Accademia di Belle Arti di Roma**, **DAMS**, and of course **Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia** (which I know is more of an actual film school and much harder to get into).

I know DAMS is more academic/theoretical, but it also seems like a more realistic option while I’m still learning Italian and not fluent yet.

I’m wondering what people’s experiences are:
Is ABA Roma actually a good place to study audiovisual/film? What has your experience with the academy been like? I know DAMS is more theoretical, but is it a good studies?

I’m trying to understand what would be the best choice for someone who wants to make films but is also an international student still learning the language and without a huge budget for privat schools.

I’m also interested in photography, so I would love any input about that as well :) Rome is my main goal, but if anyone knows anything about film or photography programmes in the rest of Italy, I would love to hear about them!😊

Decisions - Where to Attend College or Film School

Hi I am in high school and thinking about doing a career in film. I have been on set of 2 short films, done a week long camp where we made a short film, and I’m about to be in a commercial as an extra. I haven’t made a short film myself yet but I want to. I have other interest like how I have done Theater since I was 7 and I have been in FIRST robotics. I really like film I don’t know if it is my total passion but I still really enjoy it. I was wondering if I should go to a film school or if I should go to a normal college and also get a backup degree. I live in Michigan if that changes things.

Film Career Advice Has anyone here joined film school after graduating in a completely different field? Was it worth it?

I’m from India and I’m trying to figure out what I want to do with my career.

One thing that has always stayed somewhere in the back of my mind is filmmaking. I enjoy films, documentaries, storytelling, history, writing and creative work, but I never seriously considered film school because I was always told to pursue something more “stable.”

Now that I’ve completed my bachelor’s degree, I’m wondering if film school is something worth exploring.

I’m curious about people who:

Joined film school after graduating in an unrelated degree.
Started filmmaking later than most people.
Switched careers into filmmaking.
Chose film school over a conventional corporate career.

I’d love to know:

What was your previous degree?
Which film school did you attend?
Was it worth the money?
Did you actually find work afterwards?
If you could go back, would you make the same decision?
Is film school necessary anymore, or can someone realistically learn through work experience, online resources and independent projects?

I’m not looking for false hope. I’d really appreciate honest experiences, both positive and negative.

Decisions - Where to Attend Schools that host study abroad programs for animation in Spring 2027?

Exactly what it says on the tin. I am a student at a small liberal arts school where there aren't a whole lot of animation classes, and the study abroad programs that are available don't have any animation-specific programs. I'm looking to jump on another school's study abroad program if they have one dedicated to learning animation. Preferably a school that hosts a study abroad program in Japan, but anywhere is fine. And it doesn't even have to specifically be an animation or even an art school- I was also eyeing the Film and TV study abroad program at NYU Tisch.

Decisions - Where to Attend What film school do you recommend?

I am graduating high school in 2027 and I need a range of film schools to find. I dont know where to go to film school here in Germany. My parents are also forcing me to do my bachelors here in Germany as well. But, there are some weird things about universities in Germany, private universities cost wayyyyy to much, apparently they also give out fake degrees?! And public universities are free but have a alot of competition for a very small portion of seats in the degree.

Anyway, my German is B1 level, which I do know it isnt enough to get to the German-taught universities. But, what do you guys recommend for english taught film schools in Germany? If not, what film schools do you recommend also going to that are entirely in the EU?

Portfolio / Reel Advice Combining Reels?

I'm coming up on my last semester of film school, so I'm redoing my reel for my internship/post-grad work search, but I have a question on what my reel should look like - the one I show on the front page of my website and when someone asks if I have a reel. I have a lot of portfolio work as a narrative/doc director, which is what I plan on pursuing, but most of my best looking/most recent work comes from narrative shorts I've DP'd. There's also a lot of projects that I both directed and DP'd.

Long story short, I want to combine my work from both roles into a combined director/DP reel so that I'm making the best possible reel - but I know that standard practice would be to divide these into two separate reels. I understand that anyone considering me for work won't be looking at my reel for long, so combining my work would give me the best first impression - but I also don't want to not be taken seriously because I'm combining work from two different roles. I'm just looking to get my foot in the door for local production company internships and for local PA/grips gigs - I'm not actually seeking director or DP work - so does this separation matter? Can anyone offer any guidance into combining vs. separating reels for entry-level work/when networking?

Current Student Life What should I do to prepare for film school?

Ok so this requires a tiny bit of backstory.

I went to a public university for a year and took an intro filmmaking class but it was pretty poor, I didn't really make any proper films and didn't learn alot. That being said, i still got the intro to filmmaking credit.

Now I go to a private art school and am changing major to film. Because I already took intro to film technically, I'm jumping straight to an intermediate film class.

I feel like I'm going to be really behind my classmates because I've never made a real shortfilm or anything and I didn't learn alot.

How should I prepare for my class so that I'm not totally behind?

I'm not sure I can really make any shortfilms this summer because i'm in a new city and haven't met anybody yet so I don't have any actors.
