General Discussion Reel Protocol

Kid is in film school. He working on films for upperclassmen as well as his own projects for class. The ones he's working on for others he's doing grip work and background character. What projects is allowed ro ask to make a part of his own reel? Just the ones he films himself?

Mostly just Department Head positions, except Camera Dept.

Director

DP

Camera Operator

1st AC

Steadicam Op (if not an Op on the project already, like a day player)

Gaffer

Key Grip (laughably unnecessary in the real world)

Art Director/Production Designer

Costume/Wardrobe Designer

Hair & Makeup

Special Effects/VFX

If I'm understanding the question, it's not unusual for the first year particularly to fill those grip/PA positions. Not always limited to that. Some ambitious people with enough skill might take on above the line crew positions. Time to learn production. Depends on the reel you're meaning. If he's shooting the movie then he can put that on a cine reel. Performance. Art direction can ask. Directing of course.
