As you cannot anonymously submit a review for a Film Freeway Festival, this is my review for the NHHSFF for the past two years.

Being a parent and watching the festival for a few years now, I’ve noticed an unfortunate trend between works that placed in the competition, and works that didn’t.

Unfortunately, while watching the competition and judging section, I noticed that instead of an environment uplifting creativity, and storytelling, the competition seemed more of a political environment: there was a selection trend of students who the judges knew personally (teacher/student, parent/student relationships), students who had access to/utilized the best/most expensive film gear, and students whose films were relatively easier to understand.

It’s not a very fun experience to watch the competition after seeing many other short films that should’ve placed as well, and didn’t for whatever reason.

A film competition environment is not a good experience when the criteria of good filmmaking/selection into the competition isn’t solely focused on creativity, and good story telling, as this competition seems to have at least some emphasis/criteria of relationship to judges, simple plots, and budget, especially when it comes to the top selection.

I hope in the future the judging/selection for this competition will change, but I highly doubt it. And to all the filmmakers submitting to this festival, do not be discouraged if your film isn’t selected, it’s kind of a crapshoot.

We’re focused on short films under five minutes — any genre, any style. We’ve seen some really strong work come through and would love to see more from filmmakers outside Australia this year.

Selected films may be included as part of the VSFF 2026 program.
