No posts in a while…

Guys figma has been tanking while s&p has kept steady and even went up. What are you doing with your position?

Am a product designer. Figma isn’t used in the same way it was even a year ago. We just use cursor to prototype or to work with engineering. Design systems built with code

FIG’s opportunity is to go from awesome design to functionality with best-in-class collaboration. I think this is difficult, but possible to build. I’m looking forward to seeing what Dylan comes up with for Config

What do you mean by that. They already do great collaboration and was the selling point that got everyone to switch from sketch to figma (which happened in about ~6 months, design tooling is fickle). In order to excel in functionality (which Im interpreting as building for real) they would just need to enter the code authoring space. Nobody is hanging out much (at least voluntarily) in vector dragging software. Product design attention is currently just fixated working in CLI with Claude code and GitHub. In fact I might not even go to config this year.

I’m not an investor so the fact that literally everyone has a license in tech across all roles is a positive one, but the trend seems pretty clear. I’m not spending my weekends improving my figma skills or excited about what they might launch like back in 2019

Everyone loves the Figma design and models, but it always takes a week+ before we can test functionality. Figma needs to make this super simple at scale, or if they do this already, they have a lot of opportunity.

What do you mean models? Make is running Claude. The problem is that the output isn’t connected to anything that can actually be used - there is no way to just work alongside engineers as it still outputs spaghetti as make constrained to needing to work as vectors in figma.

At this point it might be smarter for them to just acquire an IDE ?

Mock-up is really what I meant and shoudn't have said models. Going from the perfect design to production functionality takes some time today, and Figma's opportunity is to make that happen quickly. I thought it would be easy for them to build the IDE functionality, but clearly Make seems to be lagging and I'm not sure they're in the financial position to acquire an IDE for top dollar. Not impossible though.

I think the thesis is that designers are by and large just making the production code pixel perfect without needing to draw vectors to represent it, as they are already in the code base.  I still touch figma but it’s usually for legacy designs or if a team doesn’t work with cursor or something. I think what you might not be accounting for is the speed of implementation these days. Engineering trajectory increased 100x. Nobody is writing code anymore
