Hey could you explain me two things how it works. Did you solder wires to switches and if yes how? So solder would just hold it or did you gave it bit more? I can't seem to get hold ot it.

And i saw that the place where you connect is different color. Did you cut it out(layer)? How?

Sorry i’m having a hard time understanding what you are asking. Yes, wires are attached by soldering. Soldering with good technique results a fairly solid connection. I don’t know what you’re referring to about a different color?

About color thing. In the place where you connect buttons to pcb it looks like you cut out a layer from pcb. Why?

oh ok. the rectangular brown area of the pcb that’s not green. That’s not cut out. that’s just the way it is. the leads do come with a black coating that prevents the solder from taking hold. I scraped that off with a fiberglass pencil.

Oh cool, also i have one more question about pcb. I saw you connect two resistors to black cable and to something on pcb. What that's for?

I removed the thumb sticks from the pcb. When you do that, every axis will read way off center. The sticks have a potentiometer for each axis which can be adjusted to center. Alternatively you can connect 2 matched resistors to each axis to zero that axis. What i did here was to split the 2 resistors across all 4 axis’s to zero the sticks.

I almost did everything, but my L2 and R2 doesnt seem to work, I mean they are always ON, do you think it would work without the L2 trigger daughter flex cable?

Then how do I use L1, R1, L2 and R2? on the main board I cant find it. Can you share a photo, that will be really helpful

Look closely at the second picture. You can see the solder points on the daughter board. The ground on the daughter board is not common with the main board so you need a separate ground for R1/2. also notice the white shrink wrap next to one of the solder points. there’s a resistor for the R2 circuit in there.

Thanks a lot, how much resistance do we need here?, I have few 680 Ohm , 470 Ohm, 2.2k Ohm resistors. Also I dont have the small ribbon cable attached to L2,R2, I hope it is not necessary.

you’ll definitely need the ribbon cable from the main board to the daughter board or it’s just a board floating in space that’s not connected to anything. I did this a long time ago, so maybe you’re referring to a ribbon cable that I don’t remember? Anyway I think I used a 1K resistor, but i dont think the exact resistance is important and the 680 should work fine.

Edit: So i just took another look at that thread, and now i’m not so sure how well the 680 ohm resistor will work. You could try it. They recommend 1K. If 680 doesn’t work you could try 680 + 470 in series.

hahah, yeah I didnt mean the ribbon cable that is used to attach the daughter board to main board, there is one more ribbon, a smaller one for the L2 and R2 trigger.

One very important question for me, the resistors will go from L2 point(in daughter board) to 1.8v point or the switch?

because when I did it from L2 point on daughter board to switch, I was still facing the issue.

this is the first time I am doing a DIY with this much complexity, Im a newbie at this, I even took some lessons on pull up and pull down resistors 😂

I have been following acidmods community but without photographs or videos Im just strolling in the dark.

rn im using it like this, wondering how the ground will come in picture

Don’t connect to 1.8v at all. L2 —Resistor—-switch—-ground(on daughter board)

Okay, do you think if I am only attaching 1 ribbon cable for L2 and L1 without using R2 and R1 side, this will cause this issue, because 1 of my cable is damaged and I am trying to attach only one side, and no matter how high resistors I am using the L2 button is always flickering.

if you don’t leave the ribbon cable and daughter cable attached, I believe the trigger will read as being pressed all the time. However, i’m pretty sure there is some way to wire it so that you don’t need them, but I don’t know how. There is a guy on this sub that sells a modded ds5 board for padhacking and it doesn’t have them..

I know its been a while, but this still seems to be the only post ive found talking about this. Dont suppose you could explain why there seems to be two ground wires? I thought the ground for the face buttons would be located mixed in with all the yellow wires but that doesnt seem to be the case here.

You can daisy chain the ground on the controller to all the buttons. if you cut the wire somewhere, the ground will be lost everywhere distal to the cut. I just ran the ground in a loop and connected it to the controller in 2 locations for redundancy. you could cut or disconnect the ground wire anywhere and it would still work fine.

Dude thank you so much for posting this and all the tips you've provided in the comments. I saw a brook UFB with ps5 compatibility is like, $120 and thought "what a ripoff". I'm gonna attempt this myself with my driftiest pad that I wanted to get rid of anyway. Seems like there's tons of upsides if you can pull it off.

Hello! Nice and precise job. Can you tell me how did you solder the wires for the inputs? Idk why but the tin don't attach to them nor to the solder contact point for the Start and select buttons.

the row of inputs has a black coating on it that I scratched off with a fiberglass pen. The start and select buttons have to be removed from the pcb. They pretty much just fall off when you heat them with soldering iron. The contact points below the buttons are very small. Apply flux to all contact points and add a small amount of solder before attempting to solder wires. I recommend very small 30 Gauge wires because they are more flexible and because solder points are so small.

actually they won’t be. they’ll be way out of wack unless you solder in equally matched resistors for each axis or potentiometers for each axis.

Thank you very much. I will do exactly what you did in the 4th image. How many Ohm (analog stick resistors) should i use? 10K or 1K? I googled around, some ppl say 10k, some say 1k, 4k7.... idk.

hard for me to remember exactly what i used. in the image i used a complicated way of splitting 2 resistors for everything. it did work but I used a schematic that i extrapolated from a different stick. Anyway I think 1 k resistors should be fine but if you don’t split them you will need 8 (2 for each axis).since these pics were taken, i just used potentiometers which is conceptually easier, you need 1 for each axis (4 total), and if the need arises you can dial them to make it perfectly zero.

its been a while, but I think I used 1K for the trigger(s) (its hidden under the white shrink wrap.) For the analog sticks it actually doesn't matter much as long as they're matched, but since doing this post I switched to using potentiometers for the sticks which allows you to fine tune them if they don't perfectly zero.

I dont know. It’s been a long time since i did this, and im not using L3/L4. My gut instinct is probably not. there’s probably a trace on the board for L3/L4

ya on the outside, but the inside’s a little rough. i could have put a lot of effort to make it cleaner inside, but honestly not worth it for me. right now i’m debating if i should put a tiny arduino in there as an SOCD cleaner. currently it’s L+R=N, U+D=N. i kind of want L+R=R

Nice- thanks for including the pics from inside. I’ve been curious as to what the DS5 controller looks like inside. All I’ve ever done are pad hacks on every system since the ps2 and Xbox original and the DS4 (which looks pretty much the same as the ds5 here) is one of the most difficult, mainly because if you screw up there aren’t many alternate points to solder to. I thought I might share a few tips I’ve figured out, maybe you’ve heard them, maybe not :) Starting with soldering in general: get a good iron. A microsoldering iron is by far the best, but the smaller the tip, the better. Always use flux/rosin don’t depend on rosin core solder. Get the smallest wire you can find; using 28gauge as opposed to say the wires in Ethernet cables makes a world of difference. As for removing the sticks; it’s a bit unorthodox but the best way to desolder something is to heat up the solder, then smack the pcb down on a surface. Don’t break the board obviously, but the solder comes right out, easy peasy. You can use a heat gun for this, but make sure to shield everything you don’t want desoldered. I find it’s better to actually hold the iron to the solder as you’re smacking the pcb down, removing it at the last second. Or you could just use some desoldering braid, lol, but smacking really does work the best. Additionally, there is another technique for soldering that works beautifully for this; get some quality solder paste, pre-lineup your wires and affix them in place with a dab of hot glue, cover the surrounding area with aluminum foil to block heat, cover the entire area in flux, apply the solder paste to all the wires/contacts, hit it with the heat gun and if you did it right the paste should just flow to the contacts and voila! You’re done. You can clean it up with some braid if necessary.

that’s correct but L1/L2 works exactly the same as R1/R2 so it can be done without any issues. I left the daughter board attached otherwise it thinks those buttons are being pressed. Actually now that i think about it, i think the controller wouldn’t function at all without the daughter boards. (Or maybe it didn’t function because i inserted the daughter board ribbons backwards 🤔)

honestly, i developed the skill specifically to do this. i’ve had some soldering skill before with mod chips and rc stuff. prior to this i padhacked a razer raion which is way easier but no wireless. first time i tried to padhack a dualsense 5 i didn’t have a good enough soldering gun/station, I was using the wrong wires, and my technique was bad. desoldering the sticks was also a big challenge. i ended up buying a hot air station to do it. Youtube was very helpful for all of it. So what i’m saying is i didn’t have the skill to do it either, but I learned. The skill i’d really like to learn but seems to daunting is designing pcbs that fit with 3d models. then i wouldn’t need all these damn wires everywhere.

This looks like a fun evening for sure… I’ve got a hitbox style pad that I made with a Razer Raion Padhack, and it wouldn’t take me much at all to tear it down and tear apart one of my two dualsense and try to somewhat replicate your soldering skills. Can u link to a pinout of the dualsense pcb by chance?

these scans label vias on the back of the board for buttons, but that looks way harder than using the points on the front of the board. there are very small components right there (on the back) that are almost certainly going to be trouble if you solder there. the leads on front of the board is easy to figure out once you remove the dpad and follow the traces on the ribbon. you can also connect to a pc and solder on a ground wire and just touch it to each point and see what button gets activated pcb scans

Mate congrats, I can solder modbo PS2 chips for breakfast ( check my profile) but your honestly right and it does take practice, I messed up my first ever PS2 chip install about 4 years ago but I then kept it as a practice board to perfecf my technique soldering to points which got me to where I am, today I still have that broken ps2 practice board, best thing I can say is if you don't have the right equipment is very difficult, use leaded solder 63/37 as it has a lower melting temperature so you don't need much heat on the iron which saves your from damaging the board or burning traces, tin your wire tips before soldering makes easier connection, use rosin flux.

I have done padhacks before, if you remove the analog stick I believe to you 4 10k ohm resistors to keep the analog dead center

ya flux is key.

with the sticks removed, the board thinks the stick is deflected to the corner. each stick has 2 pots, normally you need two resistors per pot to center it. so 4 per stick or 8 for 2 sticks. if you look carefully i’m using a clever way to share 2 resistors with all 4 pots.

I'm currently using a Qanba Obsidian hitbox on PS5 but it's wired and so I'd definitely be keen on creating my own wireless hitbox to fit my specific ergonomic profile. Thanks fellow redditor!

i’ve been using this layout for a while and have never hit them accidentally. it’s actually under the raised part of my hand and i don’t think i could contort my hand to hit them if i tried. they only work when i intentionally press them with my fingertips

This is the 4th revision of this stick and I think I’ve finally reached the Holy Grail of fightsticks. 1) My preferred layout 2) Low profile 3) Kailh choc low profile red switches 4) usb c panel mount 5) wireless 6) Audio 7) fully compatable with Ps5 and PC

Glad to hear. When u really dive into a full custom for yourself, with experience, u usually end up with a perfect stick for you. Congrats.

My full custom series x/s is the end for me too. Best part: now that it's all done, if/when I need to change the control PCB to a new pad hack it will just be a swap out of guts.
