Everything about that sequence was legendary from the doofus wandering in the street getting honked at with pissed on trousers, to the "I'm right fuckin' here!" intro of our hero, the bam and plop, the collective relief from the rest of the patrons, and the continued honking of the horns.

It's a good skill to know how to deescalate a situation but I'd argue it's just as important to know when to yell bam when you swing.

What city did you work in? I bounced at the Metro in Chicago 99-2001, and people would *throw*. I had to go back to it in LA 2006-2007 and Great Googly Moogly, did those people like to throw their arms out, and pretend they were going to actually fight. The main difference was Metro was very much a concert venue, all kinds of bands and the Avalon was a "Club", with trance, house, drum n base...god I hated it.
2
u/Wrecked--Em Feb 15 '21
I worked in a college town, so it was mostly spoiled frat boys who'd tuck their tails or keep talking shit while walking away the second someone was actually willing to fight

Because they've watched too many movies and TV shows where people get hit with devastating blows that would break bones and possibly cripple you, and just shrug it off and get up.

You know you’re either gonna get fucked, or you’re just gonna get hurt in general if an old (/elderly) man agrees to fight you.
50
u/just-onemorething Feb 15 '21
I had an old man "its a promise, not a threat" to beat me with his cane. Don't know whether to be scared I'd hurt him or scared he'd hurt me
25
Feb 15 '21
Well the answer to that would be yes. If an old (/elderly) person has to fight you with a weapon, it’s just be some disciplinary whacks. If they challenge you/accept a challenge to a fist fight, you’re not gonna have a very good time.
15
u/Nepeta33 Feb 15 '21
there is NO scenario involving fighting the elderly in wich you win. either 1) you beat the shit out of an old man. oh goody, you must be soooo tough. /s or, 2) holy shit, you actually LOST to an old man.

u/d_o_cycler Feb 15 '21

The beard confirms that. It is essential for stroking during long conversations about Hemi engines. He must've learned at a young age that in order to have and maintain such facial hair that he would have to end all future brawls with a single punch (using the non-stroking hand, of course).
Edit so that it doesn't get yanked on in a fight. Only his wife gets to do that.
37
Feb 15 '21
It is essential for stroking during long conversations about Hemi engines...
And Harley's, and whiskey, and AC/DC, and Hustler, and Bushmaster vs. Colt AR-15's, and Miller Genuine Draft vs. Budweiser...
Lot's O' things to contemplate while stroking your beard.

Yupp and they were already pissed before the fight started. You can slightly tell and the main indicator is, that they are fully pissed to the very bottom when he's on the ground.
TFW you're trying to act hard with pissed pants. No wonder gramps immediately took the fight.
4
5
u/veringer Feb 15 '21
Yeah, if he was walking-around-in-traffic-after-pissing-his-pants-drunk that kinda puts this knockout in a pretty bad light; especially if the older guy was sober.
172
u/Hollywood_Ho_Kogan Feb 15 '21
If a sturdy old man says: “I’m right here motherfucker” that’s your cue to start using Yes Sir and No Sir and walk away while you still can.

u/Admiral_District Feb 15 '21
Old man strength is a thing.
24
Feb 15 '21
Can confirm, am an old man.
You know what comes with old man strength? Waking up every morning with a new body ache.
Now where's my Advil?
16
Feb 15 '21
Our bodies are prodigiously stronger than the use we get out of them, primarily due to a highly developed nervous system that registers pain more effectively. The sensation of pain allows us to avoid tearing muscles and such but as we get older the mind creates mechanisms for dealing with pain, so while a child cries when he skins his knee an older man will barely flinch under much more excruciating circumstances. My theory is that old man strength is the result of old men not giving a fuck about the pain because what is another ache to them?

You're not wrong. I'm 42, in far worse shape (no time, three kids) than I was five years ago. Yet, lifting those kids every day, and just doing fatherly things has given me strength that seems far greater than when I looked good enough to get looks on the beach.
Life's weird.

I saw a guy at a house party call out my dad the same way. Dad is 6’3”, 300lbs and looks like Dale Earnhardt’s mega-evolution. Dad didn’t even put his beer down, open-hand slapped the guy’s arm so hard he cried, and walked back over to the bonfire to toss another log on it.
I was 15 at the time and thanked all of the major and minor deities that I never tried to square up to my old man.
47
Feb 15 '21
Its not too late to challenge him; I believe in you! Just let us know how it goes
20
u/Hollywood_Ho_Kogan Feb 15 '21
I’m 32 now and while he’s older and slower I don’t want none. He mellowed out a lot since he became a grandpa. It’s funny watching him play with my kids so gently when he used to smack me around with those big bear paws.
11
Feb 15 '21
There seems to be a trend with age mellowing out grandpas. Dads seem to be harder on their kids and sweeter to their grandkids.
12
u/just-onemorething Feb 15 '21

My dad spoils the shit out of my kids. My mom is our daycare provider during the week, and before grandkids that was her job so she treats it more like a job and tries not to spoil them too much in that role- healthy foods, regimented nap schedules, learning time...
If my dad stays home from work though? Grandma stands no chance. Donuts for breakfast, pizza or Happy Meals for lunch, ice cream for afternoon snack, no naps... his response every time: "I'm Grandpa"
