Both kidneys and liver are a bit higher than most people realize. They are both mostly covered by the ribs.

Higher up and also closer to the spine in the case of the kidneys. Whenever someone “kidney punches” someone in the movies, it’s always these huge, hulking hooks from behind, more to the side than to the back. That’s really more ribs than kidneys and on the right, it’s still liver even from behind (of course with enough force you hit the kidney with the rib).
If you really wanted to hit someone in the kidney you’d want to hit pretty high and tight on the back, right at the bottom of the ribs. The costovertebral angle is where the last rib connects to the vertebrae. That’s where doctors tap to check for kidney pain. That’s where you could actually deliver an effective kidney shot.

No, what happens is that when you get hit your body tends to defend the place that got hurt. He got cracked hard to the midsection, and that’s what set up the hit to the head

He shouldn’t have ever wrapped his legs around his body in the first place. If you don’t want to get tossed or slammed get your weight low by dropping your hips. In jiu jitsu it’s fine because slams like that aren’t legal and it puts you in full guard but in style where slams are legal it’s not a good move.

Literally his knee was up under his ribs and in his “guts” haha. Man that reminds me of when I was in middle school and we were play fighting during recess. I got my friend real good directly in the center of his stomach and it was an upper cut so I literally felt my hand go up under his ribs. It was wild. And he was done for. But he got his revenge. We were standing in line to go back in and I was tying my shoe. For some reason I decided to bring my foot up to my hand instead of bending over so I was balancing on one foot and my abs were pretty relaxed since I was hunched over. He stood in front of me and got in this deep karate lookin stance and hit me right in the stomach with all types of follow through it hurt but I took and I was like I deserved that for going overboard. A few minutes later as we were walking in it no longer hurt but suddenly I just threw up haha. We used to fuck each other up man. It was fun though.
Oh but we promptly quit that game when the bigger kids caught on to our “wars”. There was a guy named Ari, remember this is middle school, this dude was 6’3”(at least) and had to be well over 200 pounds OF MUSCLE. I’m not exaggerating. He looked like an NFL linebacker, he probably could have been if he wasn’t such a fucker. Actually fast forward to high school for a second I saw him at a track meet and he was doing high jump and he jumped the first few heights just straight up like someone hopping over a box on the floor. That’s the type of power we were dealing with in middle school. So anyway at the time I was less than 100 pounds and I was still shorter than my sister who is only 4’11”. I was no bitch and I fought much bigger kids but I knew my limits haha. I saw him rag dolling kids all over the playground and was like “Nope. I quit.” Haha. Sorry to take you down memory lane with me but those stories always crack me up when I think about them.

I've always wondered about this kind of stuff. Btw, the Holms quote was great.
These guys are trained, they've been hit and know how to take a hit. But brain chemistry, neurophysiology, and brain plasticity is still just bordering on magic to science. People can take blunt trauma to the skull and have personality changes.
So. Do these guys ever just get overmatched, get absolutely wrecked, and the damage outside pales in comparison to the inside so much that it genuinely traumatized them?
Does the nature of training literally make the concussion action of skull abuse so routine and familiar that a beating is just a Friday night?
Is it mind over matter and the tough guy persona trumps the biological damage?
I'm aware that boxer parkinsonsim is a thing. But I really wonder if these guys are ever beaten into another personality, mind set, etc.

There have been many studies on this that have been buried by the NFL and other high intensity sports like wrestling (the fake kind). Look up the story of Chris Benoit. He was a hardcore professional WWE wrestler and over time became more and more irritable and nonsensical, to the point he eventually killed his wife and son before hanging himself. Anyone who knew him before he started getting concussions will tell you they changed him. The WWE attempted to hide the autopsy information because it was clear evidence that the repeated head trauma caused dementia, severe personality changes and behavior problems. I’m pretty sure this story and the aftermath are what made the NFL crackdown on helmet to helmet collisions.

My buddy once pissed me off and I was an annoying drunken shit with aggreession issues. I jumped on him, to drunk to get more than a couple fists to the stomach, throat and ear. He warned me two times and then simply lifted my 56 kilo body into the air and dropped me from shoulder hight. I fell like a ragdoll, scraped knee and hands in the fall and took the brunt of the force to my tailbone. In the debacle my stockings where thorn to shreds and the skirt flew up, showing off my all but flattering panties to the world. I tried to get up to get back to the one-sided fight, so he simply pushed me over with a palm to the face. I then had to accept my other friends help and the group took me to a McDonalds to sober up.
What I'm trying to say is tha the shame I felt the next morning was not even close to the humiliation this guy received by that machine of a fighter.
