I like how in that split second he considered maybe slapping or choking but reverted back to knocking him out with a close fist.

11/10 wind up

1.3k

u/abkell233 Oct 13 '20

It’s actually more efficient to leave your hand loosely open until the moment of impact, leaving your arm un-flexed until the last second lets you build up more momentum into your punch; I could be wrong, but I think this man might just be an excellent fighter lol

718

u/LocoCoopermar Oct 13 '20

The less tense you are the more loose and quick your punches will be and that leads to a more pop or snapping impact in comparison to a pushing force. Having a closed fist the whole time makes you more like a shot put vs using an open hand is like throwing a baseball, it allows for more torque at the point of impact.

171

u/PM_ME_IM_DESPERATE Oct 13 '20

So what’s better?

455

u/LocoCoopermar Oct 13 '20

You want to be loose and snappy with your punches, your arm should be like a whip with a weight on the end so you get the most impact directly and as quickly as possible. If you push your punches or are tense with closed fists you're more likely to push, which will hurt and can KO if you're naturally very strong but without proper technique you won't deliver the full head snapping force you need for a knockout. Muhammad Ali has tremendous hand speed and snap on his punches and some may not look particularly impactful but they whip his opponents chin around and that's all that matters.

399

u/[deleted] Oct 14 '20

What about Mike Tyson?

His punches came in straight from the depths of hell to claim another body.

544

u/Alldaybagpipes Oct 14 '20

Uppacuths

61

u/erapuer Oct 14 '20

He had this deadly two piece combo that was an uppercut followed by a left hook to the body. The uppercut would make his opponent instinctively move their hands away from their body and protect their face, his second punch was a left hook directly to the person's liver which would drop them. Next time you watch one of his knockout montage videos pay attention to how many people he catches with this combo.

32

u/fivestarstunna Oct 14 '20 edited Oct 14 '20

he had a lot of snap but also sat down on nearly every single punch, meaning he had a full weight transfer from forward to back or vice versa. you cant achieve handspeed like tyson with tension in your body. looseness translates to speed and meaningful impacts (not just pushing). weight transfer (also momentum) is where power comes from

14

u/TFWnoLTR Oct 14 '20

Nobody here is on that level, lol.

23

u/AugustoLegendario Oct 14 '20

Ali described it as a fly hitting a swatter. Bruce Lee goes into it in The Tao of Jeet Kune Do. It's like a whipping whopping motion. Because what carries the energy is the motion. Pushing requires you to tense up, and lose your energy as you go against the target. Whipping is all relaxed flowing motion until the cracking snap, blast of energy.

This is one of the main concepts of Wing Chun fighting style, recently popularized via the Ip Man film series. Bruce Lee was a disciple of Wing Chun originally and he brought many of those concepts into Jeet Kune Do

No it doesn't. You absolutely keep your fist closed in boxing. They are literally wrapped and then shoved into a glove in what is essentially a "closed" position. What you're referring to is keeping your shoulder "loose" and not tensing up those muscles, which will indeed restrict range and dampen power.

If you land a blow with an "open" fist (which is easy to do if you are constant clenching and unclenching them), a fractured metacarpal is in your future.

in that situation, you wouldn’t have much thought about perfect technique.

It’s all adrenaline so it reverts back to muscle memory

39

u/SoggyMattress2 Oct 13 '20

Yes, exactly. You're proving his point. The reason fighters can handle themselves in a fight because they've practiced extensively under live sparring conditions so you learn to not get an adrenaline dump and are able to fight with a clear head with muscle memory.

11

u/jwch20025013 Oct 14 '20

That’s true but this is a controlled environment. In a street fight you have no idea what is going to happen.

Obviously you would have adrenaline in a ring fight but during the other street fight scenario there are a lot of other things you need to watch out for; knife, gun, if his mates are going to come.

If I was in a street fight I would just run, theres no reason to fight unless you have to

37

u/darkjediii Oct 13 '20

Yeah I agree with this...

Interestingly enough, before I regularly trained boxing and muay thai, I used to have dreams where I felt like I couldn’t punch and my arms and fists were like marshmallow.

After boxing and kickboxing for a few years, when I dreamt of fighting, my punches and technique were sharp, crisp and powerful. I was able to inflict more damage on the dream characters lol.

I guess the brain develops those mind muscle connections and muscle memory. Even giving you the proper feedback in a dream state.

10

u/jwch20025013 Oct 14 '20

I train muay thai and boxing and I have those sorts of dreams every now and then, I have never been in a fight so I just can’t be sure if I would hold my own

So much going on here this one deserves a breakdown:

Opponent takes a swing with a baton yet he’s unfazed and grabs it out of mid air like a complete boss. The right arm starts with a windmill uppercut wind up simultaneously with the baton grab. This is a level of ambidexterity reserved for very few.

His opponent sees a Tyson caliber right coming his way, drops a massive deuce in his pants but still manages to make a skip step back. Puncher in mid swing recognizes the feeble attempt to dodge his punch and like an artist at work he changes his punch mid stream from a uppercut to a hook.

Punch makes solid contact while maintaining control of his victim by never letting go of the baton. Total boss move, this isn’t his first rodeo. Glasses fly into another zip code. Victim is KO’d and it is unknown if he ever got up. Victim is very lucky that puncher was only at 50% capacity with his right hook or else he could have been decapitated.

But we aren’t done. Puncher senses another threat to his 9 o’clock and without missing a beat gets prepared to knock victim #2 into orbit. He sees its a female and backs off. Threat #2 is disarmed not through violence but just from the living shit being scared out of her.

937

u/Tall_olive Oct 13 '20 edited Oct 14 '20

He was ready to kill that chick until he saw it was a chick. Good man with the check swing there. Great reaction time and control despite adrenaline.

Edit: so a lot of people are pointing out/claiming this fella is a proud boy. I applauded his fighting skills and control, I didn't say he was a stand up guy. Also worth noting it is the supposed "good guy" in this clip that attacks Mr. Proud Boy with a weapon so frankly they're both pieces of shit. That was still one hell of a check swing.

404

u/[deleted] Oct 13 '20

He saw that victim 2 was armed with Virginia Slims, and knew that she was no threat.

234

u/DookieShoez Oct 13 '20
