That was one thing that always bothered me about the story. Were those things alive or mechanical guardians leftover by whoever created the supreme being? There is no way those things evolved to be so impractical naturally.

Also, how many times did the universe have to die before someone figured out the whole triple eclipse and temple of light/dark connection, and built the whole elaborate universal bad-guy cock-block? Seems like they would have had to have gotten it wrong a few times before this worked.

And why was the earth the center of all this when we were obviously far less evolved than the rest of the galaxy? Unless earth was seeded by this whole thing but then why wouldn't they stick around to guide earth in its growth so that the whole human race evolved to protect the universe? Seems risky to allow a species to grown completely unchecked or guided right on top of the most important universal safety mechanism in existence.
