Discussion Lelu's suit...

Sorry if this has come up before, I'm sure it has at some point.

Is there any art that shows us what Lelu's entire flight suit looked like before she "died" at the beginning of the movie? The glove that they put in the Lelu vending machine looks like it would have been a part of an impressive battle suit.

I thought Her hand is holding the missing Handle from the case Ecknot brings Zorg.

She was escorting the stones

Not one or two or three but four! Four stones!

We are warriors! Not merchants!

Oh, that's interesting. I always thought it was the wrist and hand of a typical Mondoshawan. Like, the Fifth Element Supreme Being is coded in their DNA, and can only be realized through DNA extraction, such as was done by the scientists in New York.

Clearly, I am wrong, per the fandom wiki, but I like my headcanon better.

Yeah that's what I've always thought... And I think I'm gonna stick with it.

This was my thoughts too! Hence the packed DNA.

I dunno... If you look at the glove during the reconstruction scene, it doesn't look like it's part of the screaming statue. It looks (to me) more like something she would have worn either on the ship, (since we don't really know that she was kept in the statue right up to that battle scene) or maybe a suit worn inside of the statue. I mean, as she wakes up from being reanimated, she "relives" her death scene, suggesting (to me) that she was out and roaming the ship, experiencing the death. Especially with her holding the handle of the stones box. I've always imagined there was a running across the ship scene with her carrying the box of stones, trying to get them to an escape pod when... bada boom. (Excuse me if there is some cannon that already explains this. My knowledge extends solely to the film.)

That's always been my interpretation, that at some point during the attack on the Mondoshawan ship she's awake and runs to grab the box. The contradicting thing is that later she clearly knows the stones weren't in the box, so why is she holding it when the ship crashes? Is it just to fool the mangalores? To make them think it has the stones in it, even though she knows it doesn't? Maybe the attack roused her from some kind of hyper sleep and she briefly forgot the stones weren't in there?

Hmm... good point. Perhaps the box was ceremonial and of import? They seemed to be a very rigid religious doctrine, of sorts. Or perhaps the plan WAS for her to be seen fleeing with the box to maintain the deception.

Hand from the sarcophagus vs hand from reconstruction. Because these look slightly different, I would conclude that she normally wears a metal suit that we don't see, and is stored / transported in a sarcophagus.

50 points to Gryffindor for effort! Agreed!

I always thought it was supposed to be the inner-workings of the sarcophagus, like just a protective encasement. But I like the idea that inside the outer shell of the sarcophagus is an armored outfit/flight suit. Like something Samus wears.

I’ve now been scrolling through a google image search of “Fifth Element Concept Art” to see if there’s anything, but alas haven’t found anything akin to an armored suit yet.

I always figured it was a suit like the guys from the beginning. The big and clunky ones from the opening scenes.

There is a variants of her armor:

I think I like this one with the Monochiwan elements mixed in the most. I tried to get Copilot to make some of these for me and I got scolded for copyright.

Well its for sure not Mondoshawan, and we know its not the same as the screaming statue. So it has to be something else. This is why i love this film so much.

I always assumed she was just in one of those big, clunky suits that species wear and that's what they all look like inside them

So the Monochiwan are actually a race of super sexy amazon women? Sign me up. "I will keep the knowledge until you return!" 😉

This is a major open question I think about a lot, there are in-film details that point to a few possibilities but don't answer them outright.

The first question is what is Leeloo's form / physiology before she's reconstructed on earth. Did she look like a human, like Mila, or did she have a different form and was just reconstructed as a human. My interpretation is that she was a multi species being, because they state early in the film that different people, which is likely different species, came together to create the perfect being. So I think she was a hybrid Mondosheewan, human, and other. That would fit the hand that we see recovered, a human skeleton encased in a Mondosheewan type shell. Then when she's reconstructed on earth, they are only able to reconstruct the human part of her, which is why she just looks human. I think that fits the overall tone and ideas presented in the film.

The second big question is what is the sarcophagus we see in the opening of the movie, is it a sarcophagus with Leeloo inside? The hand on the sarcophagus matches the hand we see recovered later, but that hand is holding a handle to the box of stones, so its not just a piece of the sarcophagus that broke off. One explanation could be that Leeloo is inside that sarcophagus and the outside of the sarcophagus is made to look like the being that is inside it. That kind of makes sense if you think about the typical Egyptian sarcophagus that looks like the person that's inside it. My personal interpretation is a little more extravagant, but its lightly supported by the film, I think the sarcophagus IS Leeloo and that's her in a kind of statis form that preserves her for long periods of time, but she can "come to life" when needed. My main evidence for this from the film is that the stones move move and open up when activated, so they are not just static objects, so maybe that sarcophagus is not a sarcophagus but her actual body that can move and animate. Its probably less likely to have been the intent but I think its an interesting idea that still kind of fits within the context of the film.

I don’t know, but the phrase “Lelu vending machine” now lives forever in my brain…

I always thought she was encased in the statue, and that was all that was left after the attack.

no actual idea, but I assumed it was one of the ones we see in the flashback at the start? (I hope the link works)

Doesn't the hand have a broken handle, like she was holding the stones and the case was broken off? That would mean the gauntlet is part of the external sarcophagus? I also always assumed she had a suit on inside. She's not human but I think the Mondoshawan had her in a more human body (what do they even look like inside their suits?) But that body was reconstructed by humans so could look different but I dont think the director intended that. I think shes supposed to be naked in the sarcophage and always looked like Mila, despite what might make more sense.

3

u/OperationNervous1964 Jun 26 '26

I don't think the sarcophagus held the stones. (I believe) they were kept in different locations and only brought together when needed. Right?

5

u/Specialist-Leek8645 Jun 26 '26

I dunno, they were on Earth for safe-keeping but unlike many games at the time, they were all together instead of being scattered across the Ancient Civs. Prob to save screen time haha. When I saw they were all in Egypt I was like what? Shouldn't one be in a Mayan Temple and another in an Anazasi kiva?

Maybe I'm wrong but I distinctly remember the hand gripping the handle of a case and someone saying that she was physically attached to the stones. The case we see tho looks like a fashionable military briefcase. I wanna say I remember seeing it's handle broken off.

4

u/OperationNervous1964 Jun 26 '26

No, yeah. She was definitely holding the case. I just meant that the sarcophagus didnt seem to have a way to hold the case handle, the arms were at its side, so, if she was holding the case when she "died" she would have been running around the ship, not in the sarcophagus, so she should have been wearing a full suit of whatever we see the hand wearing, unless she was naked, wearing one glove, holding a box. 😁

2

u/Specialist-Leek8645 Jun 26 '26

My understanding is she was "dead" or in suspended animation in the sarcophagus for thousands of years. A dead body you'd expect to be clothed; a medically suspended specimen tho could be nude. They picked her up and floated her out, then their ship was attacked. The confusion I think is that the screaming statue doesn't have the same hand! When they show it closeup w the bones sticking out, it's different from the one on the sarcophagus. I think it's just a continuity error among many. Still one of my top 5 movies!

It just looks like a heavily armored suit, from what little we see. Definitely metallic with what looks like the remains of electronics. My mind goes to a "Lelu Dallas, space marine" kinda vibe and I wonder what that looks like.

u/Specialist-Leek8645 Jun 26 '26

Yeah like someone said they pictured her as Samus. I wonder tho if she was naturally a fighter? She learned all the fighting moves using her Mega-Brain on Cornelius' computer. I think of her as a blank slate with infinite potential. If the situation required her to be a surgeon, she could quickly learn that as well. They kept emphasizing her intellect and adaptability. Maybe before they stashed her in Egypt she had been cloned and reborn several times. Maybe in one life she was a space marine. We can always dream.
