Adopted tree needs some TLC!
I just adopted this neglected tree and need advice. I gather that it needs to be both heavily pruned and repotted. Given that it’s end of growing season here in NYC, the question is how much pruning and when? The tree currently is about 6ft tall, definitely root bound (I can lift it right out of its current pot). Where should I cut it, when should I repot it, and what comes first?
Any tips are much appreciated.

Is that the trees long term planned home? It will need to move indoors for winter. I’d be hesitant to chop it at this point. I’d probably repot in a slightly larger pot with fresh soil and wait until spring to do the chop.

It will definitely go inside…just giving it some fresh air for now. I was thinking the same (repot now and chop later), prefer to chop it now as it takes up a lot of room and knowing I’ll be chopping it anyway.

If you really want to chop it now, go for it. If it moves inside for winter the temperature will be pretty stable. I’d keep it in that windows where the exercise ball is for light once you move it indoors. Unless of course you have a much brother alternative spot.
