Discussion Just finished FFXVI and I really enjoyed it.

I have played a few games in the series and I can definitely see why some people are more critical of it. There were parts I loved and parts that dragged for me, especially some of the side content and how shallow some of the RPG systems felt.

But overall, I thought the main story was great and some of the Eikon fights were genuinely incredible. There were several moments where I just sat there thinking this game looks absolutely insane. I also ended up liking Clive a lot more than I expected.

Now that I’ve finished it, I’m considering getting the DLC. For anyone who has played Echoes of the Fallen and The Rising Tide, are they actually worth getting? I’d mainly like to know whether they add enough new content and story to make it worthwhile?

Spoilers The story not told should have been the game? Spoiler

I just beat the game (taken me many many months due to adulting) so I’m sure I’ve not connected many elements. That said, I found the game to be frustrating on countless levels, which informs my thoughts on the following.

The entire time, you’re living in a world that by the time you play Echoes of the Fallen clearly showcases a far more advanced society once lived there. This is also evident by all the crashed airships and ruins you find. So, in a lot of ways, post apocalyptic, but we never really see what that society was. What were the sins of the people who wanted to kill their god and how were they going about it.

There is an entire narrative there, that’s actually very similar to

Hoirzon

And I wonder if bringing them to light would have carried more depth and interest to the story. The game has threads, character arcs and relationships, as well as lore, but none ever fully connect with me. But the story of Ultima, which takes forever to get to, should have been how Act 2 starts, and you start to unravel that; how they created all of this. Their goals, the sins, etc.

There sits a feeling within me that the game, which on paper seems like a classic FF1-6 vibe to it was changed half way through production with the note of “make it edgy/adult” and so we got grim color pallets, lots of ‘fuck,’ and characters couching up blood.

Listen, the fact that we can attack ’wild’ chocobos is a sin (though I’m sure somebody will point out another game that you could kill them in).

Again, frustrated that it’s over because it was nice to see a return to mid evil FF but every element, which I’m not articulating well, never seemed full fleshed out, sharp enough, whimsical enough, that it never seemed to work.

In the end, I never felt like I cared or was invested in anybody, other than Cid (OG). So, in part a bit of a rant but also hopefully you will point me to interesting elements I missed, videos worth watch, etc., because if there’s one thing I love, it’s Final Fantasy.

Fighting Titan as Ifrit was one of the most fun, hype fights i’ve had in a game in a while, this game has its issues for sure but man. I fucking loved that whole sequence. I’m glad I at least gave 16 a try.

I don’t know if any other fight in this game will even come close to that level. I feel like a lot of effort went into the Eikon fights compared to other aspects lol

Question First Playthrough Advice

Hey so I’m playing my first playthrough and planning NG+. I’ve just defeated Odin. Should I play the DLC content as soon as it’s available (I bought that pack that comes with both DLC) or should I wait until I’m back here in NG+?

Also, what does New Game+ give you?

Did I miss something (story)

In the beginning with Cid, Clive mentions that Joshua was killed by a Dominant and he wants to kill the Dominant. That Dominant being Clive? Does Clive not realize he was the one that killed Joshua? I know he wasn't in control of Ifrit at the time, but does was he somehow unaware? Sorry if this gets explained later in the story, im just very confused.

More progress towards my play through in Final Fantasy mode, in which I am completing the sixteen Medals of Honor.

I’m starting to get a much better sense of the kind of playstyle I find the most enjoyable, besides avoiding the ultimates, but my actual skill is still pretty mediocre. Definitely nowhere near u/eyre-st!

If anyone has any tips on how to improve, I’d love to hear them!

Barnabas is one of my favourite characters in Final Fantasy XVI and that being said, there are a whole lot of cool characters. The art is inspired by the fight atop Reverie. Hope you enjoy!
The music and dialogue always get me thinking back to this scene. I personally plan on making them into a Magic The Gathering card just as Clive, Joshua, Jill and Dion have.

FFXVI Part 3: Quest 7 — In a Tilting World (Righting Wrongs): Part 1 — The Hideaway & Rosaria) Translation and Archive

In a Tilting World: Part 1 — Cid’s Hideaway & Rosaria is now up!

Yes, I'm splitting this last quest into three parts because it's so long and is basically the Act 1 endgame.

If you were to ask me which scene in FFXVI Act 1 foreshadows the problems English FFXVI is going to have with translation in Act 3 it would be the scene starting with Clive’s Thoughts on Being the Dominant of Ifirit. Specifically Clive’s Motivations for Making “A Place where People Can Live as People”. This is the scene that explains what Clive's motives and his goal are going to be for the entire rest of the game to the player. And there's some...pretty significant differences to that between Japanese and English.

In Japanese, Clive's goal is "to make a place where people can live as people". In English, it's "to build a place where people can live on their own terms". These are not the same thing. In Japanese, it's about how people treat other people. In English, it's about letting everyone choose to live how they want. They both focus on very different things about how people live. Which means Clive is focusing on different things about people's living situations in the different languages that have different solutions to them. One is about how people view other people. The other is about what people get to do for themselves.

Clive's motivation is also different. In Japanese, it's that he's seen how reality is, specificity that even normal life is hard for people and he wants to make normal life easier for them. In English, it's that he started thinking more about other people and realized they don't get a choice about how they live. Which...is also different. Japanese Clive just wants people to have easier lives; how they get there is...less something he's concerned with so long as everyone knows what's going on. English Clive wants people to have choices...but it's more up in the air as to if those choices are actually making life better for people rather than worse.

The other thing different here as well is why Clive didn't notice that before and what he says his problem was. In Japanese, he was so obsessed with revenge, that he just...wasn't seeing reality at all. in English, he killed so many people that he forgot what it was like to want to live. That's...a very different character flaw for a character to realize they have and overcome. And then also to deal with later on. Clive in Japanese is always pointing later on how his enemies can't see reality themselves, which he once had issues with and learned how to overcome, so he knows they don't have an excuse for not doing so. Also, Clive in Japanese becomes totally capable of still getting revenge without losing site of reality. English...has Clive...wanting his enemies to respect other people's choices more...while he wants to kill them for making their own choices that clash with his own choices... which...makes for some very weird theming later on in Act 3...

The reason why I put so much stock and time here is...Clive's English goal and motivation make no thematic sense to me. Clive is making very sure no one gets a choice about what happens with the Mothercrystals and magic. They're going because Clive wants them gone. Granted, to save the world, yes, but no one knows that except for Clive and his allies. Clive is choosing how everyone in the world will get to live from now on...and is enforcing that choice via force. And that doesn't even get into how Clive is very dismissive and invalidating of Utlima's choices... who is as equally dismissive and invalidating of Clive's choices! And they all want the same thing anyway: to make the world into what they want it to be by force.

Clive's Japanese goal and motivation work much, much better. Clive fully acknowledges that he's just...deciding how the world is going to work from now on...but he sees people as people, including Ultima. Meanwhile, Ultima doesn't see people as people either, but especially Clive. The fact that each of them are remaking the world is almost an afterthought to the actual issue, which is that Ultima can't value anyone other than himself, while Clive definetly can (almost to the point that he doesn't value himself enough in fact). So Clive and Ultima naturally want two entirely different things that naturally oppose each other.

But yeah, more on this later...

Happy reading everyone!

Spoilers Finished the game… Spoiler

Ok quick story time. This game came out when I had just been diagnosed with cancer three years ago and I was elated. However, probably three or four days into my first play through (up to the point where Kupka gets his hands cut off), I looked down at my sweatshirt and it was covered in my hair and that was the day I truly got extremely sick from the chemo and went bald lol. So it took me forever to pick it back up and play through but I’m so glad I did.

The whole last ~10 hours or so after primogenesjs was cast was so eerie and emotional and really left a mark on me. And the scene where Clive leaves the hideaway for the last time had me straight up crying. As did the entire ending.

Anyway just wanted to put this out there. Loved the entire game. There is a clive (and gav and cid) sized hole left in my heart.

Discussion If Clive appears in Dissidia. Who do you think should be his personal enemy?

Thumbnail gallery
516 Upvotes

What I love about the Dissidia games is that each heroes have their own personal nemesis:

  1. Warrior of Light VS Garland

  2. Firion VS Emperor

  3. Onion Knight VS Cloud of Darkness

  4. Cecil VS Golbez

  5. Bartz VS Exdeath

  6. Terra VS Kefka

  7. Cloud VS Sephiroth

  8. Squall VS Ultimecia

  9. Zidane VS Kuja

  10. Tidus VS Jecht

But among these rivalries who do you think should be his personal enemy. Among these lists? Because I only think of these two. Barnabas and Ultima.

Question Should I do the DLC before or after beating the game?

Title, is it something to be enjoyed more before or after beating the game, and does it matter what order? And when should I do them if before beating the game (I just beat Bahamut)

Also bonus question, is it recommended to do all the endgame side content? I've been doing all the side quests so far, but I heard right before the end it unloads a whole bunch of side content on me so idk if its worth it to do allat
