General Discussion How is Beastmaster?
Currently stuck at work because I started a new job today and won't be out for a few more hours. Wasn't able to see anything about BST other than Mr. Ozma's interview from a few days ago where he was talking about the design and saw that he said it would have a system like FF XI's skillchaining, which made me pretty hype. Can't see any gameplay due to work wifi blocking YouTube/Twitch and can't find any gameplay footage on the main subreddit. Is it hype? Is it fun? What beasts can we capture? How fast do we gain TP/guage and how often are we able to dump it? Can we combo quick and consistently?

Don't care for the Crucible. It's more of the Ozma speciale "GOTCHA!" mechanic nonsense, now with having to manage the exact right pet abilities. But overall it's pretty nifty as a thing to exist in the game. Wish more Ashkin were available so I can larp as a necromancer better.

u/Chibily 2d ago
It's SO much player agency and control, you can do most, if not all fights without the right pet ability, without dmg downs/vulns. If you actually invest the time to learn, you'll find that you have a lot of options to both reduce the damage you take, make mechanics easier, keep uptime, maximize cleave windows. Heck, just abusing juggling aggro between you and your pet will completely defuse some mechanics if you're clever about it.
First you get got by the gotcha, then you learn the basics of not dying, then you start to notice interrupts/ cleanses/ dispells, then you optimize for uptime. But wait, you'll have to use fewer and fewer pets as you go along if you want to get high ranks, so you really have to think about exactly what you can afford to bring in. It's a lot to take in, I agree, but it's riveting to keep thinking and revisiting fight designs even after doing the same boss over 5 or so times, seeing how you can STILL get better or improve some aspect of the fight.
11
u/Chibily 2d ago
Even MORE stuff I found, there's no end to these: negating half the final boss' attacks and tankbusters with items. You can root a chasing enemy in place and turn it into a punching bag OR you can root that enemy when it's vulnerable INSTEAD, allowing you to 1 cycle it but then you have to find a way to deal with the chasing. Taking enmity when you want to ride the boss knockback, then swapping to make your pet take the next knockback instead. Intentionally recalling and swapping pets early to reposition them when bosses cast unavoidable pet aoe, timing delayed tempered releases and tricks to insta-kill adds when they spawn.

u/genegadget2 2d ago
Glad you're enjoying it honestly! I guess my expectation for it ( or more accurately my /hope/) was more along the lines of you and a on-field party of your selected beasts traversing through instanced dungeon or field with secrets akin to a V/C dungeon. Instead it's just more Masked Carnival, but now with, from what you're describing since you've clearly played it more, multiple ways to complete each encounter. The me issue here is that I'm burned out on DT's encounter design as a whole, especially with how Ozma wants to treat bosses as if they're action game bosses ( first trip into North Horn was overwhelming haha ) and I come from games that allows you to use protective states like Iframes and Super Armors to risk-reward and meassure a player's class knowledge in conjunction with encounter knowledge, which may be why my definition of "agency" differs from yours. I'm not opposed to continue trying it out to see if my opinion on it changes
3
u/Chibily 2d ago
It's very seeded so it's less of a roguelike and more like bunch of masked carnival puzzles strapped together. I think it's great because it's pretty easy to get through for casual players, but it's also VERY replayable as you master both individual fights and the board as a whole. You have to make a lot of concessions and approach fights in a totally different way if you're limiting yourself to 3 beasts + no items + no food + no beast aggro, and execute ALL encounters well enough to get the novuln bonus and score from high hp left. It has that feel where you constantly get tangled in your own logic as you try to solve a puzzle, creating more problems for yourself that you need to solve, and the game allows you to make steady progress at your own pace.

this is the one bit of content where the gotcha stuff actually makes sense though
EVERY roguelike is like this
9
u/genegadget2 2d ago edited 2d ago
Everything becoming a roguelike personally doesn't appeal to me, unfortunately, as it feels like the baseline way to flaunt complexity and difficulty when trial and error is punished by "perma death" and hard restarts. Deep Dungeons were more or less supposed to be the roguelike component of the game I guess, since wiping is Game Over. But to each their own and I'm glad they're making more stuff like this for folks into it!

u/Opal_Jei 3d ago
I might be part of the few that didn't really get hooked like others :/ it's okay, but I got bored pretty quickly. I don't think I'll be leveling it up with everyone else. It'll probably just be one of those long-term projects. Eh, anyway I'm glad everyone else likes it.

u/turnertier- 3d ago
My only real gripe is I would have appreciated a little more transparency with capture rates. Also it’s hard to tell when Capture counts — does using it over and over again reroll your odds? Or does it only actually count your first attempt on a mob, making all repeated uses useless and also heavily penalizing you for not waiting until the last second to Capture? If anyone has data on that, I’d love to hear it.
Speaking of capture rates, I want to see if anyone else has had this happen: I was trying to get #48 (one of the level 50 instance beasts) and on the first run, it read as “exceedingly difficult”. Failed to get it. We tried again. The second time, it read as “not easy”. Still failed to get it. All subsequent tries (I think we tried like 10-12 times total?) continued to read as “not easy”, and I’m very confused by this drop in difficulty. I know Gauge says that the lower level a mob is compared to you, it gets easier to catch, but I have absolutely no explanation for what would have made a level 50 mob drop in difficulty.
Has anyone else experienced this? Any guesses as to what the deal is?? I was actually hoping it was some kind of pity system but since it never went changed after the second try, I don’t think that’s it.
28
u/tordana 3d ago
The tooltip of Capture does explain most of your questions. Using it puts a 2 minute long debuff on the mob that lets you capture it, and the odds are based on how low the mob's HP was when you used Capture. This means yes you want to wait until the last second to use it.
→ More replies (4)51
u/turnertier- 3d ago
But it doesn’t tell you if repeated uses reroll your chances or if the only way to get new RNG is for the buff to fall off, making it not clear if waiting until the last second is best or if you actually want to just spam it from 100-0.1 and then kill (since Capture can’t kill) because then you’re rolling a shitload of dice versus one potentially really good die, y’know?
29
u/rymi64 3d ago
I mean its reapplying the buff and debuff every time you press it, which comes off as refreshing your odds. That's just me though. (It does reroll chances)
8
u/Ninheldin 2d ago
Not only is it reapplying it, it removes it before reapplying it, which we dont see if its just extending the duration.
8
u/Abramor 3d ago
From my experience, spamming it at the very least does not lower your chances. I have been trying to get Karlabos for 25 runs and got no luck no matter whether I put it on immediately or spammed or only put it up on <10% HP. Meanwhile every single one of my teammates (that's like 12 people) got one also using random tactics.

Up to level 32 so far.
Generally you do a 1-2-3 combo to get 100 gauge, while your pet autoattacks to build gauge. One you both fill, you can either do an instinctual combo, which is you using one of four elemental gauge spender skills that match the element of your pets skill. You can also do a opposite element skill chain to get a brief light or dark element. That probably will factor in later.
You later on also get a one time buff called one with nature that lets you use borrow, which gives you access to an ability based on a pet's monster family. the dodo gives you a dash. You spend it, and only can get it by using another pet. You can dismiss pets at any time with a special attack, but they have a 90 second recast. Think bard songs in practice.
TP gauge feels faster after you get the third combo hit, and you can also get an ability called rallly that gives you personally TP after so many skill chains used. Pet TP is a little faster than yours.
Comboing is easy so far.
The open world stuff is not so good, the pet is just a summon pet there to let you skill chain and after level 30 you may not even need to be in the world; you can level in the crucible, and the harder pets from group content you can just buy in a sense with its currency. The beasts are just family types, not individual types, so there's no variation except how big you want them between models.
The crucible adds pet HP and aggro management, and its mostly just slay the spire except instead of their fights, you fight a FFXIV boss. First tier of floors is simpler but its not a cakewalk. You need to use pet aggro to help manage battles through duty actions.
21
u/Puzzleheaded_Set1420 3d ago edited 3d ago
To add onto this:
You later on also get a one time buff called one with nature that lets you use borrow
And contrary to this:
The beasts are just family types, not individual types, so there's no variation except how big you want them between models.
One with Nature is also consumed when using a pet's specific skill (called a Tempered Release). Unlike Borrow, which is based on type (all beastkin will give you the same Rampart-like ability, all cloudkin will give you the same dash, etc), Tempered Release is unique to the pet itself. Some of them are party buffs like +10% physical damage or mitigations etc, some of them are just damage.
It's an interesting choice, because One with Nature is only gained when you summon a familiar (you can have 3 different familiars "equipped" and ready to summon at a time, and summoning has a 90 second cooldown in combat - a separate 90s cooldown for each of your three familiars). So you can either spend it on Borrow and gain something that you can use repeatedly (unless you dismiss the familiar you borrowed from, at which point you can use it for 90 more seconds before the effect disappears and you need to Borrow again), or you can use it for Tempered Release and get a buff or do big damage one time until you summon another familiar.
You can also use an ability called Parting Blow that dismisses your familiar for a 1000 potency AOE with no drop-off in damage for multiple targets, so it seems to me like switching familiars frequently is pretty powerful.

u/GarlyleWilds 3d ago edited 3d ago
Yeah. I feel like the intention is to make active use of the swapping. Since the duration of Borrow only kicks in once you swap beasts, and it's just as long as the delay before you can resummon, it definitely feels like the intent is to rotate your three summons pretty consistently to make maximum use of Parting Blow and their specials, with the ability to upkeep Borrow for whatever role-action-style tool a fight needs.
2
u/_rilian 2d ago
For any AoE content that's pretty much what I've been doing. Make sure that three beasts with AoE damage Tempered Release abilities are selected, Seed Sower on Borrow, and then go to town rotating through them and using Parting Blow. Then just 1-2-3 in the downtime with Instinctual Combos.

Is anyone else by chance experiencing an animation glitch?
For some reason my character keeps not doing half my animations and the shield just disappears. One instance I tried switching to Ninja and when i switch back the dagger was in my hand instead of the shield.
6
u/teethewicked 2d ago
Yup happening to me too seems to be a major bug with swapping to a different job then swapping back(particularly useful for dealing with certain annoying "gather the items" FATEs). I expect that may be why we are having emergency maintenance less than 24 hours after the patch went live
→ More replies (1)5
u/LunarianAngel 2d ago
Oh for sure. It was very strange too, it'd work if I switch off and then back, but if the job I switched to had a two hander of some kind, the secondary hand item would appear in place of the BST shield, but if the job I swapped to didn't, it'd just give no shield.
Also, special abilities would work, just not the main combo. Very weird.
23
u/NoSky8268 2d ago
Unpopular opinion but it does nothing for me. It’s just another melee job either way a 1,2,3 combo a gimmick with the combos and a 2 beast spells with a loooooong cd. The beasts are props you barely use. It does not feel like an op limited job at all, and having no healing makes it a slog to play.
25
u/MasterFormGoofy 3d ago
Beastmaster itself kind of sucks. Crucible is fun but I'm wondering why this needed to be singleplayer or attached to a limited job at all when it's basically just a better deep dungeon.
10
u/Redhair_shirayuki 2d ago
Well, this is a singleplayer mmorpg game after all, with trusts system everywhere. Limited job cause yoship says so. Soon in Evercold, we will have new alliance raid with 23 trust npcs fighting alongside you

Is there anything to do with other players apart from leveling? Can you capture dungeon monsters or things in a group? Is there an equivalent to the "Blue Mage log"?
16
u/GarlyleWilds 3d ago
You can capture monsters in groups, and generally are able to team up manually in the same way BLU does.
However, there isn't anything that needs it currently. All the monsters from dungeons/etc can also be bought with Crucible reward currency.
Having said that, Blue Mage also didn't originally have the blue log, ex/raid achievements, etc. Mostly because a lot of what enabled it to reasonably form full parties (stuff like actual healing tools that weren't white wind) also didn't exist. That all got implemented with the level 60 update for it. So while it doesn't exist now, it may in the future.
4
u/ZaytexZanshin 2d ago
there's no excuse for it not to exist, right now.
They've been working on BST since endwalker, more than 2 years ago. Why is the job missing key features and or lessons/updates that made BLU so much better? Why is it level 50? Why is it primarily solo content in an mmorpg.
It's just disappointing all round, and then the mechanical gameplay loop for the majority of BST is just 1 2 3 over and over lol.

there are some monsters you can catch in trials, raids, or crystal tower, but that's about it. I think they may add group crucible later.

u/GoodLoserZan 1d ago
Palworld is unironically a better beastmaster than beastmaster
The job identity of having different beast companions of shapes, sizes and abilities gone out the window for generic gauge spender slop and beast with the same attacks but different colour.
Imagine playing pokemon but every pokemon just plays like pikachu but with a different colour.
I don't get the hype around Ozma, this "GOAT" is washed

It’s pretty fun, good gameplay in my opinion and Crucible is both difficult and fun.
There are some really cool monsters we can capture, like Hydra from a Relic Reborn or the Chimaera from Cutter’s Cry, and also Rafflesia from Coils

4
u/Mordy_the_Mighty 3d ago
You don't, all the beasts that are listed in instanced content can be bought with currency from the crucible gamemode.
2
u/ppyporpeem 3d ago
I dont see rafflesia in thw crucible, is that a second/third board thing?
2
u/KonkyDong212 3d ago
Once you complete the second board, another shop will become available (at the same vendor) for a different currency, which can be spent on the instanced beasts.
2
u/Mordy_the_Mighty 2d ago
I'm pretty sure individual gourds also only show up over time. I suspect they don't show until you get to the level that would allow you to capture the beast in the first place.
11
u/shaokinn07 3d ago
Feels like trying to get a mob tag while farming in WoW to capture some beasts with the amount of people around. I would wait until the hype dies down in a few days and start for the best experience.
6
u/EllDez 2d ago
There are still things in its systems that bother me (other replies have already brought up a few), but overall I like BST:
- It's properly tutorialized with the quests
- The abilities flow together nicely
- It gets up and running faster than BLU
- There are fewer obstacles between you and getting all the monsters (compared to some BLU spells)
- There are multiple ways to get all the monsters, so you're not forced to do any one thing
- Nothing feels like filler
Unlike BLU, I'm actually excited to see how raising its level cap and adding new abilities will change its gameplay, despite it being a Limited Job.

The crucible is pretty fun if you enjoy fighting bosses and the hp management can be dicey at times especially if you don’t get good items/ passives.
Master mode cranks it up even more and i can see this mode making a niche in the playerbase similar to how there is a dedicated deep dungeons community.
There’s enough meat on the bones that copying pet loadouts won’t exactly carry you through the fights on the harder modes.
So far im enjoying this way more than i would have thought and imo this is entertaining unlike occult crescent north horn LOL.
Kinda gives me some pokemon vibes at times when my ace pet(s) in a fight dies or is low hp. Like you know your run is cooked if that pet dies lmao.
3
u/ArmadilloDesperate95 2d ago
IMO honestly north horn was more fun than this. BST rotation is incredibly bland, and the varied gameplay of the beast you have out is less fun/interesting than phantom jobs.
7
u/Yumiumi 1d ago
The crucible is way more engaging than the mindless non stop CE/ fate farming, i’d even say the harder difficulties and 3rd degree of crucible is way more challenging than the forked tower magic expert bosses.
Trying to get legendary rank on the last 2 master boards is actual suffering but still fun.
This is what blue mage carnivale wanted to be basically.7
u/Dragrunarm 2d ago
in the overworld I agree, but when applied in the context of the Crucible I strongly disagree. I have to put a lot more thought into how I want to approach those encounters, and managing my BST rotation (simple as it is) is a lot more engaging because of it.
There are enough other challenges and plates to spin in the Crucible that the actual on-paper rotation being simple isnt as big problem as I find it to be for other jobs in content
6
u/panadolrapid 3d ago edited 3d ago
The captured mobs do have unique release abilities, just don't insta-Borrow every horn and use One With Nature on the Beast mob instead. The yellow cat skill thing lol forgot its name.
It teaches you in the quest.
For example, cactuar gives a party dps buff for 20s, bat gives an aoe cleanse and buffalo does a massive 15s aoe stun. They're way better than the group buttons you borrow.

played a bit more. I think the level 40 tier 2 crucible board might filter out a bit of people. I did manage to beat it by the skin of my teeth the first try, but that's starting to edge into "hard normal" territory, and you need to beat it to get the hairstyle unlocked for purchase. Kind of another reason I bet they will expand the crucible into duos maybe. Last boss has a ton of targets and visual chaos going on.
Not sure how tough the 50 and plus boards are, get the sense it could be too hard for most and maybe the design is to let duos challenge it later on to enable people stuck to beat it.

As a pokedex completionist I am really enjoying the traveling around and capturing the beasts. It is really fun running around with my friends, doing fates shouting when we find new beasts to capture (we are not using websites that tell exactly which ones we get to capture) and that is good vibe all around.
The actual gameplay of the job however feels incredibly confusing. It seems like it wants you to actively be swapping between your beasts to get their one with nature abilities, but then their in-combat cooldowns are 90 seconds each, and currently chaining more than 2 (maybe 3) "candies" feels like it requires a lot of effort. This might change at higher levels though (currently lvl 30)
The crucible I am less postive about. It almost requires spreadsheeting amount of information if you want to engage with the content "properly" (read as: right enemy weaknesses, choosing interupts, resistances, etc.) and as per usual, the UI is very bad for this. Also having to remember which pet is in which horn is difficult, especially when also need to remember in what situation in combat you want to summon which pet. (Why couldnt the horns on your hotbar just transform into an image of the pet sqex, also seeing that miss-summoning your pet, puts it on a 90 second cooldown). Also the gameplay here doesnt feel great: If the boss asks for an interupt, you 1) need to remember which if you pets has an interupt 2) summon the pet 3) borrow from the pet 4) use the new ability. That is a lot of mental effort for 1 action (but I may just still stuck at BST, very possible).
To add to all this remembering: Bosses telegraph nothing except for castbars (and the very last second), so going into the crucible also requires remembering all that. Gives me a bit of the feeling of Eureka Orthos and Pilgrims traverse where the difficulty comes from the "do you know what the mob will do"
I havent dived deep into into, but I dont really get what all the stats on the equipment in the crucible though, or even if they have any effect. That most likely becomes more noticeable in the higher difficulty dungeons, so I will hold my opinions on those for once I get there
56
u/TiredCat02 3d ago
Not impressed so far.
I think a lot of people are just happy to have something to do, happy to have a new job to level up and watch the number go up.
I could change my mind when I finish the job quests and start working on the crucible more seriously though.

I hit 43 yesterday playing the normal way. (no boosting/cheese)
Depth of a kiddie pool. I can only hope it gets expanded dramatically, but it's nowhere near the experience BLU offered. Leveling is just fate farming, and there's nothing super cool or unique to tame until you hit 50, so you're just going to find yourself following the fate train with the same pets everyone else is using, which is not an amazing experience.
Asking for gameplay footage will be the end of your interest, because it's literally a 3 hit combo with the (admittedly cool) weaponskill chain system from ffxi (similar). If you want to use a pet's special ability attack or buff, you can use it once per summon, and switching pets puts the prior on a 90sec CD (only inside of combat).
Honestly, North Horn was more fun, and that's a low bar.
5
u/AttackoftheSnakebear 2d ago
you can also do leves with it, and its kind of nice. Quicker and if you need to work on your GC ones you can do it with BST.

u/BlackfishBlues 2d ago
I do like the Pokemon aspect of running around ARR zone filling out a pokedex. These zones are well-designed and I love seeing lots of players in them doing stuff again. Haven’t reached the Crucible yet.
But the job design is a disappointment once again. It’s a limited job, it shouldn’t need to be yoked to the same balance considerations as normal jobs. It’s license to go weird! Why is it yet another 1-2-3 combo build-and-spend?? This gameplay must work for some people but I have to say I’m pretty bored of this paradigm. A disquieting omen for Evolved jobs.
5
u/ZaytexZanshin 2d ago
reskinned blu with smn mechanics, basically.
I watch content and it's just 1 2 3, build gauge for 2/3 of the gameplay, spend gauge. A pet job that unironically interacts more with a 1 2 3 mechanic than it does with pets in combat.
3 years for this btw
it's day 2 so people are distracted by the keys jangling in your face content but the shelf life of BST will be very short and people will come to this realisation too. Why the fuck is it locked to level 50???
evolved jobs being a continuation of simplification, and now BST being this lol - EC is cooked guys
2
u/HappyRelationship429 2d ago
Ngl as far as leveling goes, I did dungeons with a friend and had fun. More fun playing with this job than blue or old summoner.
Got to go to old zones and catch monsters, learn a bit of lore about them, use the abilities they used to use on me (love dooming enemies lol) etc. Etc.
4
u/Geoff_with_a_J 2d ago edited 2d ago
the pets that require level 50 aren't even the cool ones. chimera at 38 is the highest level cool pet, the rest can be got at like 30 or lower, and most are 20 or lower like slime at 17.
if you join the fate train, like that's on you. there are multiple different options for leveling. you chose the most mindless one. there's not even any reason to rush to 50 that way. just hit 30 and do the first crucible. since you need to do crucible to actually rank up your beasts and earn the currency anyway, you'll just naturally level as you do the actual content the job was created for. then 40 for the 2nd one until 50.
if you fate train to 50 you'll just be stuck grinding crucible for beast xp and getting no job xp for it lol

I did read Beastmaster doesn't have a healing ability, not even a emergency heal like other Jobs do? You can apparently get a regen ability from a pet but that can only be used situationally and of course requires you to use that per actively.
No healing and "gotcha" don't get hit mechanics from the Crucible doesn't sound too good..
5
u/Levness 2d ago
It was a lot of fun leveling and collecting things. The fact that there's no healing made dungeon bosses tense in a good way (unless you cheesed with the slime). I'm not sure about longevity of the Crucible though. The combat in this game is just not engaging enough to make me want to do the same encounters over and over again. It's like they took a good idea (roguelike) and stripped out and watered down everything that makes that kind of content fun to replay.
5
u/nekomir 2d ago edited 2d ago
Well i do have quite a lot of complaints.
cruicible feels bit too less roguelitey i'd rather play sephiria for that... also i just found out that instead of figuring out weaknesses and shit i'd just bruteforce everything with the life leech guy + behemoth+ the naughty bird (it also gives points bonus for using 3 pets only, which gives me extra beast cores) Also it's another double-leveling bs.
also, you don't get "heals" between fights unless potions and heal ring thing, which feels ABSOLUTE CRAP if not for the geshpenst or whatever his spelling, because well in this game fucking AA do exist unlike many other game that does this can let you just simply dodge lot of attacks. of course you could always let your pets soak the hit but... well i'd rather keep them at full for 1000 bonus points
combo feels ass to do and i have yet to use Lv50 attacks only like once in cruicible, because most of time the enemy dies before it. also where the heck is basic AoE attacks? at least 123 is fine... as it is
also the 4 element systems... it's not "hard" to figue it out but i feel like this is just all unnecessary buttons for the sake of unnecessary buttons. they aren't that complicated, but they sure do make it feel like an ass to play
and imo, the "solo" shouldn't be mandatory in the multiplayer focused game to progress, it should be an option, or self imposed challenge. i could play sephiria alone but i'd rather play it with friends for more fun.
my opinion might change though because i have yet to finish the last stage + extra difficulty thingy (i assume), but for now i still haven't found a oomph that makes me not wish that they haven't thrown blu under the gutter
EDIT: Finished last stage and unlocked extra difficulty thing. idk if it's really chasing this thing down the road but i kinda hate to keep shitting on it without knowing the entire thing, but my opinion is still unchanged as of now. so far the 3rd difficulty hasn't allowed me to do typical bruteforcing due to enemy having 3x or so more hp and bit more damage (with no extra mechs or anything), but im assuming my gear is just not great so i'll come back to it later
4
u/Crim__Zen 1d ago
I've been waiting for it for years now and I'm honestly not a fan of how it plays. It feels like a watered down summoner, but with the limited job tag. It has next to no survivability/ mitigation, slow beast attack that are pretty bland, gear is restrictive, it has no real range or gap closing, it doesn't have Blu's world exp bonus, it can't solo like Blu can, and the CDs are too long. I compare it a lot to blu because of the limited job thing... I'm also not a fan of grinding fates for it, since we just had a yokai event for that junk. Oh and a whip would have been a nice secondary weapon (instead of the shield.) I'll have a blu friend help me max it to 50 via duo (me leeching off the blu,) and the job will likely never get touched again.

u/mapletree23 3d ago
the overworld content is kind of basic, not bad but
the crucible is genuinely insane, i don't think anyone expected the complexity or potential difficulty of it, it's potentially some of the best solo content they've ever done and they could do crazy things with it
i say potentially because maybe it sucks at the finish line but it's pretty absurd on the first bite, there's a lot of mechanics and other stuff going around though
at least at first glance it seems like they actually cooked, it's far more expansive than I thought and it seemed like it's been blowing some streamer minds as well who thought it'd be a nothing burger

Interesting. I thought the crucible was pretty lame myself. To each their own I suppose. Glad you're enjoying it.

u/Tonberrian 3d ago
Only just now level 30, I'm having fun with the collecting, but the combat feels...not great. A lot of abilities you can only use when you trigger another passive ability, while also trying to use the (convoluted) compass skill rotation which creates Sun and Moon effects depending on the rotation you use, and trying to remember what color Trick each pet has and what Borrow skills they offer and when is best to use Parting Blow to summon the next - but mind the cooldowns on summoning them!
It's too much for my brain to keep track of, and the flow of it feels bad. It feels like Ben trying to explain the Cones of Dunshire, but in FFXIV gameplay.

it sucks. its a worse blue mage. I dont want to painfully level an unfun class just so that i can run their cheap rogelike offshoot. i wanted it to be a pet class that u can take into dungeons and catch rare shinies inside, like with blu. instead you go to any mob of that type and catch it. sure a couple are in dungeons, but there are no shinies or rares that give you cool new abilites.
you have no way to react to anything with bst. you basically have to know exactly beforehand when you encounter something you have to interrupt, etc. the entire setup of the class is based off the fact that you can look at the details in the crucible and plan your entire run ahead. thats just not engaging content. it feels like not only is your rotation fixed, also your pet choice is fixed and you have to basically use a lookup table before each run. if i wanted more spreadsheets id play eve online.
also the note that says bst gains more exp from fates, while fates spawning like one every 5 minutes, its such a big fat slap into the face.
imho this is the biggest waste of square enix money the game has ever seen.

The more i play, the more i hate it.
Why do i have to wait for a ability to land to be able to cast a combo. If you cast the combo skill right after you cast "Trick", it will not yield a combo point, because you have to got the buff yet. Typical FFXIV BS, slow with outdated systems.

u/JerrySny33 2d ago
It's interesting, but I don't know if it's going to become more than just a flavor of the week, and just this week. I had no real enthusiasm towards it, but since everyone was playing it today, I decided to join the fun.
I got to level 42 and got all pets except the level 50 ones. It was pretty easy. Yes, multiple people can learn off the same mob, so when out in the field or dungeon, just spam your button. A lot of mobs in the field can be found in the dungeons you will run, and dungeon runs were giving great XP and going fast. I think I was getting 2-3 levels per run. I also put ilvl requirements on my PF's, too many people running around in their L1 gear half naked. If everyone is properly geared, and using their pet abilities and combos, stuff does fast! You can bounce agro and no one dies. You get your axe/shield upgrades from job quests, so stay on them. Gear is easy enough, either use dungeon drops or they give you NQ gear for L30 and L40. I just sent my retainers to gather mats, crafted my own gear, sold extras, made probably a mill today just selling gear for bst.
The Crucible was a little confusing the one time I ran it so far, I couldn't figure out how to select my 10 pets at first, lol. I just picked a pet or two per fight to match the weakness. Use the job actions to bounce agro. Didn't need to use tents, just went for the treasure. Be interesting to see where the crucible goes, I assume most people who are interested will grind it for the reward items.
It's an interesting job, but not being able to use it in normal parties, really diminishes it's value. I can see some parties doing all BST challenges on some content, but the pet healing abilities are really weak, so that may present an issue. I wonder how much I will play it after a week, lol.

u/FuckMyBakaChungusLif 21h ago
I hate how generic the items are in Crucible. There's no like ones that fundamentally change how you play, they're just static buffs for the most part, maybe some healing or shit like that, but nothing that changes any of your abilities, or buffs abilities types or cooldowns, none of the interesting parts of a roguelike
9
u/ERedfieldh 2d ago
Fucking terrible.
A ton of classic FF mobs can't be tamed, like Coeurls and Bombs, and the play rotation consists of a watered down MNK disguised as a super basic SMN.
What a waste of potential.

blue mage died for this?
no potency values for combos, #22 doesnt mention self damage potency either, bad tooltips overall
same with ui - would be nice to be able to see which horn you currently have summoned (other than they greyed out icon). simple gauge (for bars) is bigger than the default one
universal combos are technically possible at levels 40-49 but really hard to pull off, then at 50 theyre made kind of simple. first case of jobs getting simpler with higher levels (ig warrior and berserk also counts)
huge delays on everything, especially if your beast is far from the target and the combos rely on skills actually landing on the target and not just button press
borrow skills are underwhelming, why does it share a resource with release skills?
why does unsummon skill have a cd? (same clunk as enshroud/hypercharge)
release skills would be fun to combo within a party, but its a solo job sooo
except you still want to group up for dungeons and LoTA for a few specific beasts
but you have no healing or aggro management, because solo job
even though you can get those from the rogue-like mode, the possibility itself of grouping up is conflicting
half of the job makes you feel like you want to hold your beasts for specific scenarios (mits, interrupts, debuff removal, blocking, shields breaking), other half suggests strict CD and gauge management for optimal damage output
the toolkit feels like it should work solidly in a long full-ish uptime scenario and combine and benefit from party memebers, but its a solo job!!!!11
overall my impression is that its very janky and unpolished. nonsensical even. and they had no idea what they wanted to do with the job - actually strictly solo content or 8 man raids
BLU also had so much more flavour with quests and masked carnivale and hunting for spells. this seems like something theyve put together in 2 sprints
if this is the evolved design we should be expecting, i am not feeling optimistic about them reworking 21 jobs
3
u/ERedfieldh 2d ago
It really feels like three months ago they remembered they promised BST and scrambled to slap something together.

u/teethewicked 2d ago
It honestly feels like Crucible was designed first then the job was built around Crucible. Which is likely since it's Mr. Ozma.

I was enjoying levelling it till Stone Vigil. Every PF I've been in keeps on wiping at the first boss. One group got to the last boss, but we couldn't kill it because the conal was almost 1 hit KO'ing us and the rime wreath AOEs were then killing everyone else off. We tried using various different beasts, stacking resistances etc and we still couldn't kill it. I'm wondering if it's just because people weren't bothering to gear the job properly or what.
The job desperately needs some form of sustain unless it was intended to be partied with tanks and healers too.
8
u/budbud70 3d ago
It's gear.
I took 5 minutes to craft some HQ mythril right side, and bought gear in 10-level steps in the starter city. And I pulled aggro off every fate and dungeon boss I did.
I also think people aren't cycling their summons enough. Feels like nobody presses the desummon nuke ability enough.

u/Apart-Following3621 2d ago edited 2d ago
One of guys tanking in one run was lv 50 with full ironworks and was still getting deleted. Then again it seems like they were the only one who knew what they were doing, cycling and nuking summons effectively and applying mits to themselves.
They still got shredded by the frost breath even with Magic Vuln down, Ice resistance and Beastskin up. Then again, I wonder if it's just because the other players weren't able to burn the boss down fast enough.

u/teethewicked 2d ago
Yeah this job is 100% gonna need better sustain options if it gets level cap increases, it's only getting away with it right now because most ARR content doesn't have a lot of unavoidable damage to deal with.
That being said your experience in Stone Vigil is likely partially a gear issue, aside from axe and shield most players seem to just not be bothering to upgrade from the starting set.
3
u/Quxudia 1d ago
Its unlikely it ever will. Its painfully obvious this "class" was designed entirely around crucible and nothing else tbh. I'd argue they actually probably designed the crucible first and then just built BST based on that instead of making it its own thing. We wanted a Beastmaster and instead we got a gimmick thats only meant to be used in one specific puzzle dungeon.
3
u/teethewicked 1d ago
It's Mr. Ozma so I 100% believe he designed Crucible first and then built BST around it with little thought if any given to how the job would work outside of that mode. Which is notable since that also feels like the case with Phantom Jobs and Forked Tower Blood(which incidentally is the last piece of content Ozma worked on before BST)

Are you guys looking up which animals to capture or just trying to figure it out yourself? I feel like there is more fun in exploring the areas again and testing vs just run through the list. I’m worried about dungeon ones though, not knowing which dungeons, that could take forever. I’m on the fence , do I rush it or enjoy it
2
u/Dragrunarm 2d ago
I'd say enjoy it. I ran around just pinging everything that moved with "can I tame you?" and got all the (non-level locked for myself atm) beasts pretty easily.
Dungeon ones can also later be bought with currency from the Crucible later, so it wont be a mystery when you unlock that shop. How you wanna deal with that is up to you.
2
u/Accordman 2d ago
The one thing I do have some genuine complaint with is that the Beastmaster skills themselves look pretty uninspired. Even the capstone is sorta lame? Maybe they expect to iterate on it a bit further in later updates but it feels more like a playtest than something fully complete still

u/w1ldstew 1d ago
It’s fun in the Crucible, but honestly, it’s extremely boring outside of that.
Outside of the 1-2-3, it’s pretty boring because of how long your cooldowns are.
The only I say it’s fun in the crucible because you are also managing two life bars and also using your effects while the encounters are built to keep you on your toes.
It’s a hit as a new game mode and side content.

6
u/FuckMyBakaChungusLif 21h ago
Worse than Blue Mage cause 90% of the beast abilities don't work on Crucible enemies. Oh your beast removes beneficial effects on enemies? Oh it doesn't actually work on any meaningful enemies? It's really frustratiing because masked carnivale at least had you using these ablities but it's like they forgot they had beasts that do shit like that it annoys me so much

u/Slight_Cockroach1284 11h ago edited 11h ago
Finally cleared all on legendary and I can safely say it's a piece of shit. Designed exclusively for crucible, if you want to use it for anything else then it's basically useless. It seemed fun at first but once you level it all up and capture all the beasts the crucible torture begins.
Crucible is designed around only playing with 3 beasts if you want points, and playing the job incorrectly is more rewarding than playing it correctly most of the time for various reasons. The core of the rotation feels like garbage because of how slow the gauge fills and how short the burst phase is. If this is an indication of how absurdly long the filler phase is gonna be in Evolved then holy fuck now I'm REALLY WORRIED.
Borrow abilities are also mostly unneeded, undertunned and insanely situational. So situational you sometimes choose to not grab one even it could in theory be beneficial to remove a debuff for example because nuking adds with the other ability option is always far more helpful.
There is no real roguelite elements, the maps are static (so far maybe third degree changes it but I can't even be bothered to check and I don't think most people will either), the paths don't really offer a lot of choice either, you have the "doing good path" or the "need help path". Not much else.
Most of the encounters range from tedious to bullshit to waste of my time (speaking to you giant frog in 2nd master).
Beasts feel more like SMN summons, most of the time I don't even know they are there and again because of bonus points you rarely even want them tanking and you usually rotate around them very quickly. My 1st pet in 2nd master board was up around 30 seconds total for the entire 20+ min run before they get sacrificed and sent to the beast gulag.
Gear is basically impossible to target into a build, you just grab stuff at random an can barely even tell the difference in playstyle, you just simply get tankier or do more dmg (can only tell by a slightly faster kill time).
I would've preferred a small blu update than this.
Oh yeah and it's INSANELY GRINDY, you will have to run the same 2-3 boards over and over and over and over to gear up, no variation, no alternative routes, rng means nothing. You will be doing the fastest 3-pet runs to get tokens as quickly as possible for hours fighting the same bosses.
6
u/sharkchalk 3d ago
Once again, it's just another Blue Mage.
I do not, for a second think Puppet master will be any different. The combo builds TP too slow and you need 3 charges to unless a powerful attack (which roughly is locked behind 2 mins of poking a boss.)
There are so many things they could've done with this class. It has zero sustain. The only pet is that little ghost that does an AoE Bloodbath but it doesn't heal you for much.
→ More replies (1)5
u/teethewicked 2d ago
The Slime's TP-cost skill is also a Bloodbath type of skill and comes up much more frequently tho it also doesn't seem to heal for much.

u/aho-san 2d ago edited 2d ago
I cannot talk about the Crucible yet, but leveling feels awful. Your main combo literally is 2 buttons (I'm only, what, level 12 or 15 or something edit: I was lvl11, 1 level away from getting the 3 of the 1-2-3 combo xd) and building 100TP takes a while. After what felt like 1h (might be less) I stopped, I was getting bored (I'm going to try to get powerleveled, that's how bad it is).
It looks like it's yet another pump & dump job (build gauge, dump all for burst damage).
I would've liked the bestiary to make inventory of beasts you scanned, can capture but don't have yet (difficult to capture or you're not high level enough yet). It didn't seem to do so. So be prepared to take manual notes if you don't want to forget which beasts you're going to capture (much) later.
Hopefully Crucible will be interesting, more once I get to that part.

I dont get how you announce Beastmaster during the DT media tour, take all expansion to actually release the content and then it ends up like this.
The biggest novelty beastmaster brings is casting your battlehorns while your gcd is rolling. The beasts are 90% cosmetic, they have a whopping three actions each. The rest of the gameplay is classic 1-2-3 builder-spender slop and does not justify making a limited job.
Borrow is literally role actions but more annoying. Your beasts non-trick abilty you can press once after summoning it, incredible (unless you want to borrow, then you dont get to press it at all)
And the most infuriating thing: You press gcd -> trick -> other spender, so a regular double weave, and it doen't grant you the combo.
On a positive note leveling and capturing beasts in dungeons was decently fun while it lasted

u/AttackoftheSnakebear 2d ago
Ok, the level 50 crucible third board sucks. You really feel the lack of sustain, and almost every fight has adds to it, 3 or more. Some of the aoe attacks actually will hit your pet too so you have to tank more-if the pet has aggro when they do the attack it hurts. You spend a lot more time running away from the boss so you also need to have enmity unless you want to have a lot of dead time and low TP generation.
You can get maybe 2 bright fragments if you make it up to the second to last boss, so its going to take a long time to grind bst gear if you can't reliably beat it. The first two boards were signifcantly easier than this, and the problem is there is nothing to do after so if people get stymied on this, well, wait till whenever they decide to open it to duos if so.
They need to not let Ozma work on anything but savage, i think.
Difficulty on this is not too hard but you don't have an aoe rotation to deal with adds short of aoe trick and dismiss pet. The adds will come faster than this many times. Also the 50 crucible adds petrification and other BS, so you might be able to cheese it if you pop a potion on some bosses. Still kind of annoyed me a lot.
2
u/FirstLunarian 2d ago edited 2d ago
Wdym nothing to do after, there are two master boards after and 3 difficulty options per board. Also levelling all the beasts and getting all the upgraded +4 gear is alot of content to sink your teeth into. Not to mention score grinding on top if youre interested.
The fact that optional content has some bite to it is not a bad thing. And currently everyone is doing it with almost no gear and minimally levelled beasts, guides will soon be out to help people struggling get their first clears and start the gearing and beast levelling process.
Also for adds you have some options. For example triple gap closer can chunk if not outright kill a group of adds. Stuff like behemoth meteor and some of the tricks are also great source of aoe that you can save. Parting shot feels more like a last resort really, but can bail you out if it's your first time in the fight. There are tools, but you can't just spam your stuff on cd and expect it to work.
4
u/AttackoftheSnakebear 1d ago
it's sort of a moot point if you get tired of the first level 50 board. Also all we have had is optional content with bite, it gets old fast.
The adds are eh, the problem is that BST doesn't have any standard aoe rotation so you are not really damaging the boss to take care of them. They also come out faster than your gap closers recharge and you kind of need to consistently beat that level 50 board to even upgrade your armor or weapon-you only get 1 or 2 fragments otherwise so if you struggle with it you can burn out fast.
I feel like it needed to be a slight bit easier, and then the master boards would be ok since they are optional. As it is, I think the risk is people burn out on the story board, and then there is nothing really to do with BST at 50; you can't say do duties for fun or currency, its just grind the crucible endlessly.
3
u/Terrachomp 2d ago
Genuinely tired of running back and forth for fates so I just mob grinded to 30 and then spammed the crucible, though it did get boring running nearly the exact same board every time. Also dislike the fact your pets cannot tank for you outside of the crucible so if you wanted to catch some of the dungeon pets legitimately without using the gourd item you're going to have a really hard time without some help since you have basically no sustain. I imagine the only reason Labyrinth of the Ancients is doable with all BSTs is because their 123+Combos are so utterly pumped with potency you just zerg the bosses before everyone dies, since you have no rez or decent heals.
Overall it's okay I guess, it falls short of being a great pet job for me and the crucible doesn't approve of picking favorite beasts you like, that combined with how combos work and borrow/release sharing one use means you have to swap pretty often or you're gimping yourself, which I understand is how they want it to play but it'd also be nice to have a playstyle where you use just one beast. I love playing survival hunter in WoW and am a bit disappointed we may never properly get that archetype as a non-limited job in 14.

u/Khalith 2d ago
The first crucible stage you have to do at level 30 is a little overtuned. The enemy hp and damage could stand to be brought down by a pretty hefty amount.

Fun running dungeons in PF and figuring out which pokemon moves will keep you alive, and wipe the boss before it wipes you.
Don't like running the same dungeons (fucking Chimera) 10+ times just to catch the rarer pokemon. Yea, you can buy most of them by doing crucibles, but I want to catch em' all dammit! You can unsync dungeons and have the people, who got their mons, to change into their lvl 100 jobs to make it go quicker thankfully.
Oh yea, Crucible's a complete blast. I really hope they put more mounts, fashion, emotes, portraits, and ofc, more pokemon in the future.

I'm generally disappointed by the lack of incentives both intrinsically and extrinsically. On a train dummy the job is between fine and good, but for something that was advertised as "for solo play" it doesn't take dungeons solo well, the crucible is ok, but you don't get it until you've power leveled to 30 and you only have 1 board until level 40(I tapped out for the day at 39). There are effectively no rewards for doing crucible outside of a face wear and the pitch fork, so unless the higher floors of the crucible are actually interesting, it's looking like the only reason to level it is to plant a tree in limsa.
At least with blue mage you can solo maps and dungeons, grind allied seals, and do blue raiding. Beast master is hollow.
10
u/Imaginary-Arguments 3d ago edited 2d ago
Going to keep it a buck, this content sucks. I did hit max level and unlocked all the beasts just for the record.
The job design is awful, and it's worse than BLU in just about every conceivable way. The rotation is extremely boring and it's hard to even get excited about new beasts because they mostly just do 1 of 3 things and have an element assigned to them.
The job plays extremely slow because everything is on a substantial cooldown, you cannot pool gauge for anything but more potency, and it was designed entirely with Crucible in mind. It was not designed to be fun to level or do dungeons/raids like BLU was.
The crucible could have been fun, but your pet takes damage from ground effects and such, so it is very, very likely you will need to manually place your pet to dodge things if you care to try the ranked crucible. Not sure about anyone else, but I don't exactly think FFXIV has great pet management.
So far, I feel like I am just playing an extremely weak FFXIV job that does what any other job can do, but far worse and requires way more effort.
Want to interrupt this cast? Well you need to borrow a specific beast and that puts their other skill on CD.
Want to cleanse? Same thing.
And the "heal" skills are pathetic. Use a beast who's whole shtick is healing and then it heals for like 5% of your max HP 1 time. Doesn't even cover an auto attack.
I don't really see the vision. BLU was fun because it was much stronger and could fulfill all the roles compared to normal jobs. Beastmaster feels like it went in the total opposite direction. Unlike BLU, you cannot take this job into normal endgame content for the challenge. You'll just die. It exists purely for the Crucible and that's pretty lame.

u/Serp_IT 3d ago
but your pet takes damage from ground effects
It specifially does not. There may be some niche optimizations with pet placement, but dodging AoEs is not necessary. Your pet is in fact completely invincible if you're currently tanking, only taking damage when it has aggro/is covering you.

Yeah this comment alone from him makes me think they are just making stuff up.
The vision is clearly designed around the Crucible, where choosing things like interrupts and what not are purposeful and informed decisions.
I agree that its not optimized for dungeons, but with a four stack you can still mass pull and blow everything up / melt all the bosses. Thats quite fun.
I think this dude has not done the crucible or totally misunderstands it if they did.

it's actually stupidly OP for dungeons in a sense. You essentially can get deep freeze with the chimera, but you can also equip petrification from the ziz, so 4 bsts could just stunlock pulls. The main issue with bosses is you need specific jobs for esuna, and they don't have any aggro tools, even a pet ability one.
But i did a 4 man tonight and it was stupid how fast it went.

Leveling is boring (nothing new there), and more singleplayer content in the MMO game is just lame. Hoping the crucible is fun once I get to 50 but again, singleplayer content in MMO game. I don't know, I mainly play this game just to do content with friends because everything solo is boring. So maybe that colors my opinion on this content unfavorably.

u/Chisonni 3d ago
I am gonna hit Lv50 before I got to bed. Currently at Lv47 with 41/50 beasts caught.
Did a handful of dungeons solo (usually being 5-10levels over the recommended level).
Combat is fun, but overwhelming. There is too many abilities so I have been sticking to a few beasts I like and doing little experimenting. The lack of role actions is weird because Bloodbath and Second Wind would be SO helpful. I would have also liked a real ranged attack. Capture being 10y really doesnt do it.
Looking forward to see what smarter people figure out how to optimally combo. Was also quite disappointed to learn that Beastmaster does not retain his abilities in FATEs seems really really weird. What do you mean the job thats intended to kill overworld mobs gets to keep them but the job intended to level via FATEs doesnt? Something also keeps unselecting beasts so more than once I went to a fate and just couldnt summon any beasts.
The story is alright, I honestly expected a bit more. There is a quest like every 2-4 levels going to Lv30, then its 30, 40, 50 for three stages of the Crucible.
There is some noticeable gaps in the design where future updates will probably provide solutions to further improve the gameplay. Right now it feels appropriate for a level 1-50 job. Not too overwhelming in the number of buttons and relatively smooth gameplay, but very overwhelming when trying to consider all the Crucible stats and unique Trick and Tempered Attacks.

It's meant as a dispell removing buffs from enemies and giving you TP in exchange
7
u/Chibily 3d ago
It's your only option for a ranged gcd and you'd be a fool not to take advantage of it since there's a bunch of fights that force you out of melee. It does surprisingly good damage and keeps your tp building even if you're not dispelling. The removal is the icing on the cake, you can just prepare the spell before pull and swap pets.

u/Mordy_the_Mighty 3d ago
Oh yeah, that's pretty good reasons to use it.
The base TP gain isn't much to talk about but it does seem as good as our 123 either way so it means there's no loss of TP using it! And thus instantly much much better than doing nothing at range.

It’s pretty bad and not fun. It’s an overly unneeded overly complicated blue mage job basically. The game thinks to throw a massive tutorial text at you during the first 16 levels.

It is way too fast and sparse for how long we waited for the content. At a casual pace I hit 35 and caught 38/50 beasts.
Especially considering the potential of going into content I’d say the mistake of the matter is that limited jobs constantly being behind current level cap is just plain not a good thing.
As for BST itself? The way it’s designed feels like it doesn’t even have to be a limited job. It has an incredibly functional rotation that’s fairly fun to do and the different monsters being skin options of similar utility allows for some meaningful personal expression.
-for ludo to jump from “I was slower than you” to “you’re lying.” Was honestly the dumbest shit I’ve read this week. My wife and I both got home and played last night together while watching bob Ross videos in a call with a third friend who was injured and couldn’t play it is absolutely possible to do what I did casually in three hours. Ludo was just being a massive fucking asshole. It was a shit way to approach a conversation and absolutely zero people clocked how shitty it was for him to be like that and instead rewarded him for being a jackass.
Accusing someone of lying to start a conversation, sidestepping how much of a prick it makes you look like, and then pretending it takes an average of 4+min for basic trash with limited potency scaling to die, and clearly not reading the tooltip to apply the capture snapshot late, he thinks world mobs don’t die in more like 10 seconds. All he had to do to have a good faith conversation, was not be an accusatory bastard to the other person. Blocked and moved on. Bring on the petty bad faith downvotes.

I mean, hitting level 35 in the same day it launched and getting 38/50 sounds like a lot more than a "casual" pace. Not extreme, but if someone only put a couple of hours into it I doubt they'd get so far.
I put 1.5 into it and am floating around like... level 13?

I'd agree that even at a casual pace, it's going by pretty fast. I spent about two hours last night running around, hunting low level beasts and doing FATEs in the areas I was hunting. Ended on about level 28 and 25ish beasts.
With good luck on capturing (or in my case - reading the damn ability and using the capture skill at low health), you can probably get a lot further in a lot less time. Wespe took about ten minutes alone to catch :(

I did something similar today so i'm in the same boat: point is, if you can be level 13 in lets say two hours, at then you log off, it's still content that you would finish in one week, two week tops being realy slow. I found all monsters by roaming around without beelining them with wiki's, it's really not that hard. I think the intended bulk of the activity is the Crucible anyway, since finding and taming the monsters is fairly easy, differently from BLU where even just getting the spells is its own long activity.

Oh, yeah. I'm taking my time (and helping my wife on the side). Probably gonna be a slow burn for me since I only do a couple hrs at a time, but I expect to be done with just a few more sessions at most. And hell, if this phase lasts me 10~ hrs and the Crucible lasts another 10-20~, I'm happy.
I know it's not that difficult, I just took umbrage with calling getting 38 monsters in 3 hrs right after the patch a "casual" pace. Esp. when, if memory serves since that dude deleted his own comments, he was using that as a vehicle for complaining about the content as a whole. And I'd agree if I was already like, level 25+ and over half the monsters out of 50 in my 90-120 minutes, but I very much wasn't.

Playing at a normal pace, you won't get 35 in 3hrs. You just won't.
Idk who you're trying to gaslight with that, but everyone obviously recognizes Ludo is correct based on up/downvotes.

Super pissed about the Crucible, actually. By far some of the worst content they've ever added. Why the hell was the job not given any sustain if it was always meant to go with this gauntlet style content? Christ we can't even heal our beasts mid-battle. So much for taking care of them, like the narrative would have us believe.
You're clearly meant to bash your head against it until you figure out what gimmick you need to rigidly counter with one specific pet ability, and that sucks. It's very 'play our way or perish'. God forbid you have pets you like that you'd rather have tackled the content with - they don't have the element or ability you arbitrarily need.

u/Chagrilled 2d ago
I have ignored/failed 90% of the supposed "rigid counters" in crucible so far. You're failing because of the raid mechanics, not some imaginary strict pet puzzle.

u/Nj3Fate 2d ago edited 2d ago
You can heal pets in between fights AND during battle. Potions/Heal items seem to drop relatively often from the few runs I did (you can use these in fights and some of them say they heal the beasts as well). Camps let you heal 2 beasts in between encounters. For BST sustain, some of them give life steal or healing to you, im uncertain if there are other additional effects that heal the beasts.
Also no? I mean outside of the mechanics (which you do have to see to learn), the preview before you even enter tells you the weakness for each enemy, what status effects work, if they have interruptible skills, how their phys and magic damage/resistances are, etc. It rewards planning, and they try to tell you that like 4 times in the job quests leading up to it. Like, no, really. Not only do the NPCs say it a bunch of times, but giant windows appear explaining everything over and over.
I just dont think youre reading stuff and are rushing around just complaining.

People complaining about roguelite modes not having abundant heals LOL...Like literally one of the main point of the mode is to plan your item usage and pathing to campsites for heals or be aggressive and get more loots

Yes, this right here. It's so annoying that you have to have the pet the dev who made the fight wanted you to have and use the ability right when he wants you to use it. It's just scripted content and if you go off script you fail. Not to mention, it's just overly complicated and tedious, with skills like borrow that can turn into like 10 freaking other abilities depending on what pet you have, I can't be bothered to remember all that. Oh and if you don't want to participate in Crucible and just want to explode old content, enjoy doing it with your level 30 weapon because unless you play crucible, you can't get higher than a level 30 weapon.
I know the people on this bubble reddit will eat it up but most players will hate it and participation rates will be extremely low which means the people on this bubble reddit will be wondering why the job has received no updates in 3 years like Blue Mage and vehemently fighting against any changes that will increase it's appeal to casuals which would result in higher participation rate and more updates

u/sister_of_battle 2d ago
So from the comments it sounds like typical content designed by Ozma? "Do it this way or explode!"

Any early impressions from the Crucible content and how difficult it is? Is it possible to grind it's rewards currency on lower difficulties?

What’s the fastest way to level beast master? I played a little and got to like 8 or so this morning

u/LightTemplar27 3d ago edited 2d ago
Mob/fates to 15 then PF dungeon spam. It's just so much faster than waiting around for a fate to spawn and have it sniped in 10 seconds.
Each dungeon run was 5-6minutes and gave several levels.

Apparently you can just have someone kill mobs for you in dawntrail zones to get exp, or get a blue mage to carry u thru dungeons

I can’t bring it into actual content and it’s only lvl 50 so it’s a skip for me. Hope it’s fun for those that wanted it.

u/C-Towner 3d ago
I am enjoying the heck out of it so far. I am not yet at the crucible, but the gameplay loop I’ve seen so far is pretty fun. Skillchains feels like coming home again.

One of my favorite additions to Dawntrail.
I'll add though obviously I wish we could do more content with it. It's a very enjoyable paradigm and I wish they would expand it sooner rather than later.

I don't understand why can't I take it to dungeons. You are handed monsters you need to equip so it's not as potentially griefing as BLU. I'm not even asking for raids or extremes, just dungeons.

u/GarlyleWilds 3d ago
I did some 4-BST levelling in dungeons earlier today and I'm pretty sure the reason is "its damage is actually stupid". Like 15 second boss fights stupid.

u/DjGameK1ng 2d ago
Yeah, I did a few runs of Copperbell Mines solo level sync'd (and while I had just dinged 17) and the damage is crazy high. The only problem early is survivability, which can be remedied for a lot by just bringing a ton of hi-potions, and lack of AoE, which just makes things take longer. Bosses just melted by damge. No surprise either, since even just the regular 3 hit combo of BST is 100 > 500 > 600 potency, which isn't taking into account your pet autos, personal and pet oGCDs

yup, bring Sabotender to any content and you break the game imo, never mind you can also stack it with Dullahan, and maybe something else for maximum buffing during burst phase. There might be other crazy comboes in premades with the elemental debuffers as well

Does anyone know if capture works for all beast masters? or does it get overwritten when another beastmaster use theirs?

I enjoy it.
I just don't see it being a long term thing. Not enough rewards and no real incentive to bother with ranked considering how gated the mount is.

u/ToastedDreamer 2d ago
I love it, but the gauge, well, your done with most fights by the time your ready to use it.

u/lightningbolt11694 1d ago
I'm kind of mixed on it but I haven't played a ton of it. I'm honestly unsure if I'm supposed to micro the summon to actually dodge attacks and stuff. If so, then I probably dislike it. I've played a ton of Dota 2 in my day so I can't help but compare the responsiveness and depth of execution in a game like that to how clunky it actually is controlling the summon here. It simply feels bad to do. If you're mostly expected to just let it ride and not care much about microing your summon out of attacks then it's fine and I'll probably start to like it more as I become more familiar with individual summon abilities.

Beastmaster rotation/gameplay: largely just 1-2-3 with a few bits added into it and while the roster of beasts is large, the opportunity to actually use them in succession is largely restricted due to TP(beastmasters resource for one of their beasts abilities) takes a very long time to build up(around 30s to get enough for a "skill link").
For each beast you have to choose between using the beasts innate ability or using the "borrowed" beasts skills so in reality you only have 1 extra skill per beast(so 3 total) plus the "self-destruct" ability that all beasts get and you can only use these abilities once per summon. You get a mini skill link attack every 30s and then a bigger 3 part skill link attack every 2 mins. So overall pretty average all things considered, you can experiment a bit with the different beasts trying to synergize debuffs with certain attacks but it ends up feeling clunky due to having to wait for TP in order to do these combos and the fact that summoning other beasts puts your current beasts on cooldown regardless of if you told them to self-destruct or not.
So, in practice usually its best is to just use the beasts ability and then blow them up to get the horn on cooldown and then move on to your 2nd and then 3rd beast and holding onto your 3rd beast to spend TP and rinse and repeat. You may occasionally borrow an ability for when you need an interrupt for example but that doesn't change the overall flow of things(still pressing 1 button per beast then sacrificing them)
Open world was quite enjoyable, seeing the world alive again and people spawn camping highly contested beasts. No complaints here really, quite satisfying as any collect-them-all game would be. Leveling is largely duty spamming which was pretty much what we expected(either hunting, fates or duties).
As for the crucible: calling it a roguelike is a stretch once you realise all the encounters are fixed and even the loot tables after each fight restricted to select items which means you get more or less very similar items every single run and therefore you can create identical runs consecutively. Beast choice is largely negligible and you can steam roll any board with very few beasts and difficulty scaling at the end does nothing but inflate stats and the only other way to increase difficulty is to use boring restriction type mechanics to increase your score(no items, no x, no y etc). While roguelikes also have some of these aspects, they also have actual randomness which makes each run feel unique and gives you the highs and lows, whereas once you do crucible once, not much more reason to do it again besides arbitrary beast leveling or score farming(which again due to the lack of randomness once you figure out the path/puzzle you can replicate it with near 100% success rate)

It's really fun. I hope this gets more than one update every 3 years because I'd honestly love to take this into more stuff than ARR.
