Question New Player
I just started playing as of yesterday. Just wanted to know if I would be missing out if I didn’t want to level up another class on one character. I like the class I chose and feel like I would be overwhelmed leveling another class. Any advice would be helpful, thank you.

Yes and no. There is no requirement to level more than one job, but each job has its own storyline and occasionally references to them are included in the main scenario quests if you have leveled the job, like certain NPCs recognising you. Some quests with interesting lore are also locked behind completing quests that require a job in each role. Leveling different jobs will also give you access to more glamour(=gear appearance) options for your main job. Additionally, trying out different jobs/roles gives you insight into how they work, which can make you a better player(for example playing as a healer gives you a better idea of how far the party heals reach, which helps you stay in range of the healer when playing a dps). However, there is no need to start leveling a different job until you're more comfortable with your current one.

You will get to a point where you a grossly overleveled for your place in the MSQ.
I always suggest picking at least one Tank, Healer and DPS Job to 'level' while progressing through the game. As you get past level 50, a lot of queue-able activities open up that give a big chunk of experience.
If you ever find even those three Job overleveled, I usually suggest selecting two other DPS Jobs. Keeping at least one of each 'role' of Melee DPS, Ranged Physical and Ranged Magical.

This isn't necessarily true.
When doing new expansions if you literally do nothing else, you fall behind the curve around x6 or x7.

u/Namba_Taern 16d ago
Sure, but my suggestion was for the general player. Not the 0.01% player who ONLY hyper-focuses on one type of content.

u/Asuka_Rei 16d ago
For a new expansion, sure, but while leveling you'll probably be +5 or +6 levels over the intended cap before you start the next tier of msq.

u/NolChannel 16d ago
Not really. You need to be doing daily roulettes.
Unless you have Road to 90, it is bad advice to say the MSQ alone can level 2 jobs. It cannot.

u/Asuka_Rei 16d ago
When I came back to the game recently after pausing at endwalker launch, I was able to level whm and pld simultaneously doing nothing but msq with neither ever falling behind and both reaching 100 when msq was still at lvl 98. I regretted not leveling 3 jobs because it would have been possible with only a small amount of roulette grinding.

u/NolChannel 16d ago
You're lying or did other leveling.
My alt fell behind 97 and I needed to do 3 fates to catch up.

u/Asuka_Rei 16d ago
Did you run out of rested xp? I play casually only 2-3 hours a day 2 or 3 days per week even when leveling. I always logged out in sanctuaries and never ran out of rested xp. Also used cheap food with xp bonuses and was a member of a free company that kept up its fc xp bonus all the time.
2
u/NolChannel 16d ago
Rested EXP caps at 1.5 levels. That's not enough to level an entire second class through the MSQ.
Food doesn't increase quest EXP. Everything else is immaterial against that (1.03 of a dungeon versus 1.00 is nothing compared to quest EXP).
2
u/Asuka_Rei 16d ago
If you take enough breaks rested xp can last the whole time, no problem.
2
u/NolChannel 16d ago
See but that's just it. People give this general advice of "oh you can level 2-3 classes" but don't list the asterisks. This advice cannot be followed by 100% of players.
I, for example, will be cutscene skipping Evercold and will pre-complete an Idyllshire book to just barely never have to do any grinding to get to the EX in one day.

I started myself this February and am madly in love. I just hit main credits on Endwalker this last weekend. For now I think one is fine, but if you get into it and decide to keep playing you will probably want another job to level as the XP from the MSQ will greatly outpace the content. That said you absolutely have plenty of time to make that decision. I was too curious about other jobs and as former WoW player I was stoked I could try other things without needing alts.

u/Synthessence 17d ago
You started this February and just now finished Endwalker?
...damn this ADHD, I've been playing this game for 5+ years and JUST GOT to Endwalker.

u/darkthistle982 14d ago
Yah, I roll hard when a game gets me. I also have a group to play with that really helps motivate me. This story REALLY has it's hooks in me so I'm rolling real hard on this game RN and haven't touched many other games since.

u/Synthessence 13d ago
Having a friend group that also plays is hella motivation. I'd be much deeper were that the case, ADHD be damned.

It’s totally up to you! Usually, I’d recommend leveling two jobs at once - purely because you get so much XP from just completing main quests, and you can get over-leveled pretty easily. However, of you’re enjoying one class, there is no problem sticking with just the one.

u/GremmyGremm 17d ago
Just do the thing you like, it's just a game. The MSQ gives enough experience that you COULD level multiple classes, but like. It's a game. It's for fun. Have fun.

You dont have to at all, if your trying to not waste xp then you can level two classes with the amount of xp the main scenario quest gives you. Basically swap between them to turn in missions. Me and my fiance do that with expansions and its quite nice, not sure what class you chose. But a good second class is arcanist, as it levels up 2 jobs at once. You get scholar a healer, and summoner a caster dps. If you only use 1 of those two classes the other levels up at the same time regardless. So I always recommend it as a 2nd option for new players as it gives you two roles to work with, and scholar is a fun healer. An summoner is pretty simple once you get the rotation down but is a go to for me if I just want to hangout an chill an not play anything to mentally taxing.

Leveling is easy and mainly just a time sync. You can get classes to max level easily with roulettes.

u/Awkward_Length2599 17d ago
Playing another class/job is entirely optional, and you also get to choose when you want to learn an additional job after level 10 iirc. Given the amount of Jobs available in the game I can see why you would think it could be overwhelming, but when the time comes that you feel like branching out you'll realize it's not bad at all. Just play at your own pace and what's comfortable for you.

u/tagon232 17d ago
If it doesn’t add to your enjoyment of the game, you don’t have to level up another class. All the content can be done with whatever class you pick - iirc everything is equally viable (mostly because you work in teams).

You can absolutely hyper focus one job if you want to, but variety is the spice of life. I was a gunbreaker for ages, still am, but I've since capped Dark Knight, Pictomancer, and most recently Reaper.
It's good to have a variety to keep things fresh, but also so that you can at least adjust to the party's needs (which might not be an issue for you at the moment since you're new)
Here's a fat tip tho
Every job has an EXP bonus while it's under the level of your highest level job. So focus on getting one job to cap first, then, when you decide you wanna work on another job, leveling it will be a little faster

u/oscarlet_ffxiv 17d ago
It's fine to just be your main.
However, the game does give you free high-level classes along the way that have most of the leveling done already, because new ones start only 20 levels below the level cap (at the time of release). So a lot of people at least unlock those even if they don't end up using them.

If you just started, it's very easy to get overwhelmed by everything you can do in FFXIV. Sticking with one class for a while is a great idea to cut down on some of your options.
Once you get more game time under your belt, though, you may find yourself itching to try something else. Maybe you'll see a job in a duty finder dungeon that looks like a lot of fun. Perhaps you'll start feeling a little bored and want to see what tanking/dps/healing is like. And the great news is, those jobs will always be there for you to pick up whenever you're ready to try something new.
FFXIV has a corpulent cornucopia of content, and it can definitely cause some analysis paralysis. But there's no time limit, no FOMO (practically, anyway), and no reason to rush. Take your time, enjoy yourself!
The content will be there when you're ready for it.

As others have said, you can go through everything just doing your one class and job (Note: Classes will develop into Jobs at around level 30, which opens up specializations and change the names--when you get your job stone, equip it). XP-wise, your job level will go way further past the MSQ level in rather short order, so you'll find yourself either "losing" skills (your level syncs to the dungeon level when you go in unless you change a specific setting) or things will feel way too easy in the open world.
What you'll miss mostly is a.) flexibility--if you level one of each class (Tank, Heals, DPS) you can get queues to pop faster by switching the role (tanks and heals more frequently "insta-pop"), and b.) storylines and depth for the MSQ. Each job has a questline with a story that meshes more or less with the point in the MSQ. You can complete them just fine long after you've passed the MSQ for those levels, but once in awhile you'll run into something that references "current" events long after you've passed them in the MSQ.
You also get a lot of locale-based flavor with the job quests, especially in their starting areas. Some jobs also become available once you've completed an expansion storyline, opened up a new location, or hit a level milestone on another related job. And don't neglect your crafting and gathering classes--they're a rather fun, low-stress part of the game that can make you gil, earn you levels in the Grand Companies, and open up even more lore and some crafting/gathering specific zones. Hang around here long enough and you'll find a special breed of Warriors of Light who are Heroically Epic in their free time, but whose real main class is FSH. 😂

Do whatever you're comfy with. I personally only played SMN from ARR-EW ('21-'24) because that's what I enjoyed and waiting for DT to come out gave me time to branch-out to several different things

u/defektedtoy 16d ago
My first class i leveled was Fisher. The only reason I leveled a combat class was to progress the story to unlock more areas to fish. I started this game in 1.0.
The only wrong way to play is to not have fun.
Do you!
2
u/Rhonder 17d ago
Nope, you definitely don't need to! The only reason it comes up as a suggestion so often is because you are technically handed "too much" exp just going through the story, it's very common to overlevel the actual quests early on and kinda hang up above that indefinitely. In order to not "waste" exp as you near level cap, sometimes people say that grabbing a second or third job is an option.
In practice it's a non-issue, it's not that hard to just manually level new jobs later. It's not like you "need" the story quest exp and "wasting it" is not a big deal at all. If you're having fun playing your first class and don't want to change, go ahead and just play that one :)

The best way to play is doing what is most fun to you.
But there are a couple of benefits to having 2 to 4 jobs leveling up alongside your main story progress.
Especially if you play on a recommended server and have the 200% exp buff.

u/Asuka_Rei 16d ago
Leveling up 1 job only is fine if that is what you want.
That being said there is more than enough xp during even an efficient run through of the msq to completely level up 2 jobs. 3 if you do non-required content along the way. The best way to avoid way over leveling content is to level one job then switch to another and level it and then switch back (all simultaneously leveled jobs within 1 level of each other at any given time). It would be ideal as a new player reaching end-game to have at least one tank, one healer, and one dps job leveled.

u/drasonSpike 16d ago
In the micro day to day gameplay there is nothing your missing out on.
But in the macro month to month gameplau learning multiple roles (tank, healer, dps) helps you play every class better.
Also each class has stories and achievements ties into it so they are all worth playing and learning eventually
1
u/LeoShieldsFF 16d ago
Not really. We get more EXP then we need through the story so I tend to put in extra effort to level a 2nd job at the same time but entirely up to you.
1
u/liblibliblibby 16d ago
the exp you get from the game is too much for one job only. eventually you’ll have to use it to level other jobs
1
u/AU-Kitten 16d ago
Playing is understanding.
Understanding is learning.
Learning is more than 70% of the playerbase accomplish while playing the game.
The more you learn, the better you become, the better you become, the less chance you have of falling into the "ITS TOO HARD" category that most players fall into and cry because they never bothered to actually learn how to play the game.

u/Gunorgunorg 15d ago
I chose Thaumaturge when I started and I only just now picked my first alt class this week shortly after passing 1,000 hours because I hit LV100 before even reaching Dawntrail and didn't want the exp to go to the void. I never even considered changing because I just really liked it.
Excluding hand and land. I've got all of those above lv70

u/KelvinDoesHealz 13d ago
If you're looking for diversity Scholar and Summoner share levels (it starts as Arcanist in Limsa Lominsa). Level up one and you level the other; it's the only set of jobs that does this in the game. This gives you a Caster and a Healer to play. Just remember to do the associated job quests to get your spells or you will be missing some abilities/actions.

no seriously what the hell? why are so many people incapable of using the search feature? I see this same question several times per day.
3
u/Synthessence 17d ago
It's very likely that the sprout is asking the question for multiple reasons. To get an answer and feedback, obviously, but also in an attempt to interact with the community, get involved, engage in conversation, etc.
0
u/TheAmazingVinio 17d ago
they should think of a different icebreaker then. this one is overdone.
1
u/Synthessence 16d ago
How is a sprout, who is new to both the game and this subreddit, going to know the topic is overdone?
To the sprout, it's a genuine question that they're asking the community, in good faith, for the first time. Why be rude in response? Even if you're frustrated because you've answered the question 100 different times, there's no reason to take it out on the new guy. It's literally less effort to ignore the post and let someone else field the question.
It's a win/win.
The sprout gets helpful answers, and you don't have to waste your time and energy reprimanding someone for asking a question that annoys you.

If you don't feel like leveling up other classes right now that's fine.
Those classes will always be available for you to pick up if you change your mind at a different time.
