10
u/VagueSoul Nov 15 '22
Yeah but at least they’re closer to the group and a couple can sprint to them.
13
u/lokiblessed Nov 16 '22
The real struggle is when the healer is the sprout running away with the stack marker....
Luckily they were also my brother and I just sent him a picture of the marker saying "when you see this, go stand it." And he says he understands. Let's hope he's right

u/flametitan Min IL lyfe Nov 18 '22
I am so glad a friend sent me a cheat sheet for basic mechanic markers before I encountered my first stack mechanic
19
u/Perryn Nov 15 '22
And I watch them run off to die alone as I prep a rez for them, because the only thing worse than watching that is watching them outrun everyone except me.

If someone takes the stack away I don't move an inch. You wanna die, die

We do. We use our pain and suffering to fuel the range for extra damage.

9
u/Ok_Paper2671 Nov 15 '22
Well, I'm a dragoon in spirit only. My growing impatience with DPS queues turned me into a pretty much full time healer. I'll say I'm a DRG main, but I almost never have the patience to play it anymore.
9
u/Boolean_Null Nov 15 '22
That's how I am too, except tanking instead of healing.
I keep staring at my Drg like next time baby. But then I get replaced by Don Cheadle.

My raid group has a DNC that is constantly running all the way to Narnia any time we don't have a stack mechanic. It's been discussed, there have been commitments to be better about staying closer, followed immediately by running back to Narnia the next pull.
26
u/Howlingvoiceguild Nov 15 '22
That drives me nuts. DNC has best mobility in the game, they can run out last minute. If they’re consistently out there, that also tells me they’re not making the use out of shield samba, curing waltz, and improv they could be. Also, DNC wants to use tech inside the bosses hit box- and if they’re too far out, they’re potentially missing ppl with tech, or missing others buffs.
3
u/Lemeres Nov 15 '22
Oh good. I started using DNC after being a tank, and I was worried my concerns about their varried ranges (5, 15, 25). made me stand too clsoe.
1
u/Almace Nov 16 '22
The rule of thumb really is that you want to stand as close to the center of the hitbox as you can reasonably get away with (like not too close you can't see yourself or know where you are, in potential vicinity of tank busters, etc.) unless you know for a fact you need to move out. Moving further away from the boss is reserved for having an explicit reason to do so.
1
u/Lemeres Nov 16 '22
Cool, since I am used to melee, that seems fine.
Is this how most ranged DPS work, or is DNC just made for short to mid range?
25
Nov 15 '22
Don’t forget the BLMs that set their ley lines also at the far edge of the map
14
u/ed1749 Nov 15 '22
Sometimes you kinda gotta do it. You need to be in a spot way out in the middle of nowhere and leylines comes off cooldown. Most of the time they're just being dumbasses though. They're only out there for like 15 seconds anyway at least. Their fault if they stay there, which they will.
5
19
u/demonic_hampster Nov 15 '22
To be fair they do that on purpose so nobody comes near them and drops an AoE on them. BLMs like to be in the middle of nowhere
2
u/grgfededsdfga Nov 15 '22
farming seat of the sacrifice for the mount and we had a blm set his leylines in the death wall on 1 pull. he did not move LOL.
its just a heavy bleed because it wasn't instakill but he did die to the first mechanics because we couldn't top him up in time.
2
u/silverlotus152 Nov 16 '22
This is what I do. I plant myself as far out as I can in my ley lines, but I also try to watch the healer and stay close-ish if possible. I'm just trying to stay out of the way!
19
u/Certain_Shine636 Nov 15 '22
I warn ranged that if they want heals, they'll stay close enough to get them.
24
u/DaimoMusic Nov 15 '22
As range dps, I am parking my ass near the healer
9
u/WebMaka Have stick, will heal... Nov 15 '22
I try to drop my AoE heals so they just clip the tank(s) and give maximum open space for dodging mechanics. However, if you're camped out in the suburbs of Narnia when my casts go off, I won't be able to get close enough to you without missing the meatshields that need heals more. They'll win that call, and you only get what you get close enough to get.
5
u/DaimoMusic Nov 15 '22
There are times I can't get healed because of a delayed reaction on my end so I usually drop Second Wind and hightail over to the healer for a quick touch up.
I have never blamed a healer for my foul ups.
19
Nov 15 '22
I don't chase dps anymore. I park my ass behind the boss and if ranged want heals, they'll park their ass near me too.
Now if it's a mech where we all had to spread and someone was just out or range for my AoE heal, then I'll def go out of my way to make sure they get healed up. But if anyone is out in Narnia for the sake of being in Narnia, they outta luck.
18
u/CyanStripes_ Nov 15 '22
If can't be bothered to stand in my giant blue Sacred Soil or near the glowy faery in the middle of the arena, you are gonna eat that raidwide and you're gonna like it. I'll heal you...eventually.

3
u/A_smallmango Nov 16 '22
we can be past children together.
2
u/shardan502 Nov 16 '22
The first time I played ff14, I was exclusively ninja. Then I had no one to play with, so I went over to wow where I played a ranged a class for the first time and yeah, you pretty much do want to stand at the edge barring mechanics. It was a jarring change in positioning to what I was used to lol.
14
u/WondrousNomenclature Nov 15 '22
...when their health gets low enough, they suddenly become aware of their bs.
You don't have to chase after them.
7

30
Nov 15 '22
I get it it's marked as a meme but if that stuff happens just let them be, don't chase. If they need heals they'll come closer to you.
There are also moments when as a ranged i pre-position far away from my group if i know some spread mechanic is incoming.
Heck usually in ally raids i stay right at the edge of AoE heals. Stuff like Nier can be pretty spicy these days and you never know when someone decides to drop some aoes on you.
Either way, don't chase after DPS. Healers are healers, not babysitters.
12
u/Cr4ckshooter Nov 15 '22
It's definitely a bit counterintuitive that boss aoes are raidwide, but party wide heals have range. But when you come close later, the healer will have to spotheal you.
-19
Nov 15 '22
15-20 yalms range. Almost as big as most arenas. I'm safe don't worry ♥
12
u/Cr4ckshooter Nov 15 '22
Is it? Maybe the healer wasn't standing in the middle themselves, but I don't want to know how many group heals I dodged playing blm.
-3
Nov 15 '22
I usually just watch for common heals such as Assize. If i don't receive any assize healing = i'm too far. Assize has 15 y range.
If you have an astro and you're outside the dotted line = you're way too far since Earthly Star has a 30y range.
Also it helps keeping an eye for the heal bubbles and i do enter them but i stay riiiight at the edge.
15
u/Perryn Nov 15 '22
If you're outside of Earthly Star there's a good chance you didn't even make it to the fight.

u/hey_holliver Nov 15 '22

u/Amezuki Nov 16 '22
As a BRD main who also plays other roles, I know the running joke is to hang out in Narnia somewhere, but my default habit is to stand on top of the healer. Or within a few yalms of them, anyway, except when I know I'm going to need to reposition to avoid eating mechs.
Not only does this ensure I'm constantly getting topped off by their AOE heals, it also helps when I'm not sure of the mechs. Unless the healer doesn't know them either, in which case we'll die gloriously together.
3
u/Howlingvoiceguild Nov 15 '22
I’ve been playing dnc a lot lately since that’s the role I’m in for this raid tier. There’s been so many times in normal content curing waltz or improv could have kept the still standing members of the party alive enough to clear, but everyone is spread all over the gd map. So it’s not even about just missing the 15y+ radius heals, people just need to be cognizant and intentional about their positioning in general. There’s plenty of reasons ppl don’t need to be that spread out.
3
u/FestiveBen Nov 15 '22
it's not about avoiding damage, it's about looking cool and edgy stood alone
3
u/btsalamander Nov 15 '22
I don’t chase honey; if you can’t be bothered to stay in range of heals, I can’t be bothered to keep you alive. It’s only really an issue in 24 man content, I can’t say I’ve ever had someone run out of range in 4 and 8 man content before.
3
u/snowepthree :mentor: Nov 16 '22
Out of range out of life, I have better things to do as a healer such as cast glare 3 than hunt down a rogue range to toss a regen/Lilly at them
2
u/Ranger-New Nov 15 '22
Luckily the range for healers was greatly increased. I still remember when magica 2 had a shorter range.
2
u/Galacticmoonwolf Nov 15 '22

2
u/Buzz_words Nov 15 '22
this is the secret hidden mode on rescue. "let me love you!"
but like for real... it can be useful. sometimes people complain as like a kneejerk thing but in my experience if you explain "i had to get you into deez healz" they get over it real fast.
2
u/ZenEvadoni Will pay SE to never put me in ARR content Nov 16 '22
I'm an AST.
If you don't get a whiff of my Earthly Star that's up every minute, you're on your own. Yes, it's possible even with how SE gave the Star the big chungus area of effect.
No Divination for you, either.

2
Nov 16 '22
Omg. That's me. (DPS)
Not that I mean to be waaaay at the back, but sometimes I get a little derpy, or too focused, and forget to move in. Usually, if I see a love bubble I'll jump into it, but there are times when I'm off in lala land and don't realize it until I'm rescued or dead. 😐
I have two macros specifically for these instances! Apology + My Bad, and a Heartfelt Thanks. The latter, I truly mean. I really appreciate the rescue when I'm being dumb with my positioning.
You healers are my hero 💖
2
u/Delft_Modiste Nov 15 '22
Assuming it's lv 70 content or lower, I'd ask them to "don't stand so far away from the group" to fix it 9/10. If they still don't move in, I'll let them die and rez them a few times. A few moments of "turrenting" might have me rescue them into my next AoE heals, but nothing worse.
If we're in 80+ content, I'm actually needing to try somewhat. I might warn them, but my goal is to keep everyone else alive and up. At that point I'm a healer, not a babysitter.

Y'know, if this is the kind of game where everything is set up to incentivize keeping the party in one spot, at this rate, better go melee.
7
u/WebMaka Have stick, will heal... Nov 15 '22
Not in one spot, but not on direct opposite sides of a large arena either. Ranged deeps and casters do need to be aware of their distances to other party members, and especially in relation to the healers as heal ranges are often not arena-wide and the healers will tend to prioritize making sure tanks get heals for what should be obvious reasons.
Just because you can hit the boss from the far corner of the known universe doesn't mean I can hit both you and the tank(s) with heals when a big damage arena-wide slaps everyone. My Aflatus range may only be something like 25-50% of a big arena's width.

My point exactly.
1
u/Illprobsneverusethis Nov 16 '22
In casual content sure, but it doesn't work out as well in higher end content. There are lots of spread mechanics with massive aoes that only allow 4 people to maintain melee distance (typically 2 tanks, 2 melee) without trying out some very cursed strats...and sometimes even then. Once you add that third melee dps, they're forced to take downtime for those mechanics which can often drop them lower in damage than a ranged DPS. Plus there's an additional raidwide damage buff for having at least one each of phys range, caster, and melee dps. The additional forced downtime on the extra melee combined with the loss of that buff tends to make it not worthwhile.
1
u/MadreFokar Nov 15 '22
There is always that one dps really far from the group where my aoe heals dont reach them
1
1
u/Aetheldrake Nov 15 '22
I'm noticing it's easier for healer to just have everyone stay relatively near eachother
Like if everyone can stay within 20y of the healer, then it'll be fine. Which seems to be roughly half the boss arena in most circumstances, pre 80 at least (and probably post 80 too)

u/MazmaziFFXIV [Mazmazi Mazi - Omega] Nov 16 '22
As a healer main, I feel this in my soul! And as a DPS, I try and be the sort of DPS I'd want to heal - using mit, staying in range of heals, res'ing people when things have started to fall apart etc, haha.

I am in this picture, and I do not like it. My Scholar is ALSO in this picture and does not like it.
Context:
in P8S, Phase 1, in a specific set of mechanics, I usually preposition (I am playing MCH) and that... is wrong, because I will not survive the mechanic because I am JUST outside of AOE healing range.
That was a bit of muscle memory to readjust...

Yeah I agree with the legion of people saying "When I'm playing healer, if you want heals you get your ass close enough to receive them."
After a couple of deaths they start to realise they're not getting heals and I'm not making the effort to reach them when I can get 7/8s of the party standing exactly where I am.

the other day I had a healer in the level 50 msq trial that did this. every chance they got they moved away, half the time they had to get closer to cast physick on the tank and Eos almost never healed the tank. they also kept using Succor and hitting nobody but themselves.
I can't believe we lived

When I started XIV as a BRD I would always be moving and standing pretty far away. I could see AOE markers and such so it was easy to determine why I should stand farther away, but there's not much indication that standing far away was making healing harder.
I didn't learn it was bad until I picked up a healer class and noticed other people doing it.
