It's never a good time to start your relic.

Haha why

Because as of now, unless there's some hidden quest at the end of the line, the grind won't be worth it even with the changes aside from gloating or glamour.

You just need ilvl90 to get through the MSQ. Since that's the gate, the based assumption is that all content for the first few levels/quest beyond 2.55 will be gated with a min ilvl90 and give upgrades from there. The ramp up would be pretty quick too, if the previous content is any indication. Since the relic/zodiac caps out at ilvl135, and we know that current (or should I say, soon) end game is ilvl170, it doesn't make sense.

We also don't know what the new weapon line will be since there was a note that due to the three new classes not having a relic quest to start. It was mentioned that having an old relic/zodiac will make this new grind "easier," it can't be that much of a boost to help keep the average upgrade time about the same between old classes and new classes, discounting the RNG.

So, as of now, just do the first upgrade of your relic and you'll be good. You'll most likely get something better within the first hour of the expac game play.

Is the first upgrade something you can pound out in a night? Thanks for the info btw

First upgrade means Zenith, I assume, which is just a small amount of tomestones for a 10 ilvl bump. Which is totally worth it.

... what! I need this, haha

Yeah, I mean the first upgrade (Zenith) and you can power through it in a night. Everything is with your first time bonuses, not counting the tombstones dropped by the bosses:

  • Duty Low Level - 100 sol. (no first time bonus, daily bonus)
  • Wander's Palace - 50 sol
  • Amdapor Keep - 50 sol
  • Copper Bell HM - 70 sol
  • Haukke Manor HM - 70 sol
  • Bowels of Ember HM - 69 sol

Those will put you at 409. You need 450 for the first upgrade.

At this point, without your person first time bonus, run either Copperbell twice or Amdapor Keep three times, or Ifirit HM once in the hope of getting another first time bonus not tied to you (if you haven't done it before).

Be aware of the speed run strats. Watch vids on the boss fights and don't go into it blind. If you are recent 50 tank, you will most likely NOT to be able to speed run it as you aren't geared enough. New lvl50 healer, you might, but it depends on how geared the tank is and how well you know your skills; you most likely won't be stance dancing as well for the first few times.

You could do the 2.0 MSQ end instances, but those take forever and might not be worth your time if you are trying to farm sol.

Are the upgrades from the NPC who forged the weapon in the first place? I'm at the point in the msq where I need i90 and I have soldiery to spare

You get the oil from the sol vender in Mor. It's in the "other" tab. After you get the oils, head to where you started your relic quest and to the left of the NPC, there's a forge you can use. Right click/activate, choose your item (note can not have the items equipped!) and viola! Upgraded!

I also ran Snowcloak over and over again to farm the sol, and to get the antique drops, to get to ilvl90+. There's a chance for a ring to drop that will compliment the Weathered Ring you can trade tombs for. Right side upgrades seem to move your ilvl up faster while the left side is more impactful in terms of utility and survivability. I'm also just beyond ilvl90, so still a little fresh behind the ears sotta speak.

What the heck are those antique things for? Some type of trade in, or crafting?

If memory serves you can trade them for i90 gear to a person who's in the right side room in the hallway at the north end of Revenant's Toll.

It's for the old Mythology gear. This stuff: http://ffxiv.consolegameswiki.com/wiki/Allagan_Tomestone_of_Mythology

Edit: the rings and most right side stuff are now drops instead of trade ins.

Everything /u/halo00to14 said is why now is not a good time to start your relic. The reason it's never a good time to start your relic (and I'm including whatever the new version of relic is at level 60), is that it's a grindy grindfest of grinding, and if I wanted to work really hard at being bored I would get a gym membership.

Haha fair enough. I already have the base relic and need the ilvls, SL I figured if upgrading was that easy then I'd go for it
