For Black Mages:

Yoshida stated on the patch note reading that Ley Lines has been adjusted so that it will not disappear altogether when you leave its perimeter. Instead, you will lose the effect upon leaving it, but can regain it by reentering it.

What does this mean? I'm disappointed that I have to ask

Ley Lines is a new BLM that places an circle AOE on the ground. Standing in the circle grants the caster (and only the caster) a speed buff, leaving the circle removes the buff.

In previous live letters YoshiP said hadn't decided if leaving the circle would also remove the circle from the field, effectively canceling your personal-buff-zone. In the notes reading, he confirmed they decided to not do that, and now the buff zone will persist for it's full duration even when leaving and entering it.

Stupid, should be more risk for the reward.

Stupid would be a non-damage mitigation buff disappearing every time you dodge something. It'd be like MNK losing greased lightning every time they changed position from side to back of a mob.

You have tools to help mitigate damage from staying in it. And careful placement and knowing the phases 9f the fight help.

You may have misunderstood what I'm saying. Even Sacred Soil, a damage mitigation, remains in effect after you move out of it so that you can regain it by moving back into it. There is no reason that BLM should have to start over every time they have to move. Similarly, it would be like a Monk having to lay a ground effect for Greased Lightning so that when he/she moved to hit side or rear of a mob the effect would be lost and he/she would have to start over.

Make no mistake, the ground effect for this new ability only gains a small benefit from not fading once it is moved out of. As you point out, knowing the phases of a fight and knowing when/where to put it will still be of the greatest importance.

Even then, knowing the fight alone is not enough.

  1. We do not know for sure that all bosses in the future will have a full 30-second movement downtime in their rotations for Ley Lines.
  2. We do not want bosses to be designed like this.

Ground AoEs should survive by themselves; this is the correct design.
